xD External hard drives can be moved around and such, but they're generally meant to stay put on some location. Usually this hard drive can be shared amongst other computers on a network if desired, or it can just supplement the hard drive that comes with the computer. A portable is like a really big thumb drive. It's just extra space that you can take with you on the go.
