*Kyla wasn't entirely sure how it happened, but she had been the first to notice the abrupt sidekick swap. With all of the dramatic things that had been happening though, Corbenik's rambling attempts at conversation were somehow familiar and comforting. Whether they were hanging around the Lunar Hope kitchen or trudging through a warped purgatory, Corbenik always just said whatever came to mind. No matter how entirely insensitive the root of that might be, it made Kyla think of the home she wanted to protect and return to, so listened with a small smile as Corbenik began talking about picnics.

Though no sooner had she allowed herself the momentary consideration of what kind of food to pack for everybody...and how a perpendicular picnic would even work, Kyla was snapped right back to the gloom that was Horizon, and the newest terrible surprise it had in store.

"And his grey skin doesn't look...right...well less right than normal. I think that Murk is some kind of..."

As the bullets re-direct towards Brimmstone, Kyla unsheathes Hien quickly and shoots a large ball of flame to intercept them before they reach their target.

"distraction...mew mew."

She hesitantly approaches Brimmstone, unwilling to completely trust her eyes in this place which is so full of illusion.

"Brimmstone, if that really is you and not just a stupid trick, then you should take this time to let yourself relax. Think about any time that was precious to you, either with your comrades or with us at the Lunar Hope. I know you weren't always able to be honest with us...but there must have been at least a few times when being there made you happy."

She moves to stand in front of Brimmstone, with her back to him, holding Hien defensively, her ears twitching, searching for sounds of incoming attacks.

"You don't need to worry about a thing right now. But if you do want to focus on the present, you only need to do one thing, mew mew."

She turns her head slightly, so that if Brimmstone would be able to see the side of her face. She smiles, one fang poking down over her lower lip.

"All you have to do is watch me. I'm gonna shine brighter than you've ever seen."

Ashura's soul gem shifts and becomes the silvery blade, mounted on the side of Raiden's arm. He jumps away from the thorns, slashing defensively. It actually does require focus, but Raiden attempts to play it off as though he's simply shifting aside casually. He sighs as he does so and glances up at his opponent.

Ok look...I can't say I blame you for that plan I mean...I am fairly good looking so I can't exactly blame ya dude for wanting to get all up in this.

Raiden turns to the side and points to his own butt, giving it the slightest suggestive wiggle as he does so.

But that's really not a good idea for several reasons. My body? Horribly unstable as a changeling. I only became a changeling because my genes got sort of magically confused. So even if you went after my bod in a literal act of butt piracy, you might get stuck as like...a big fluffy bunny or something. For like a year! I was a troll for a while...the fuzzy eared kind, not the kind that comes from a broken home and finds self worth in teasing people on the internet.

(Kyla)

*Murk's swing at Kyla misses, and then the slate skinned psychopath...dissipates. Apparently it had been a conjuration of souls. At its center is a poisonous bug, flapping its wings, with purple poison dripping from its stinger. Despite its tiny size, it somehow manages to be menacing. As the poison touches the tree, it begins to corrode the perpendicular pine, and it zig-zags towards Kyla. At the same time, a buzzing sound that was present as background noise becomes progressively louder. From all directions, several other poisonous insects approach Kyla. Some of them even burrow from inside the tree she's standing on. A Swarm of Plague surrounds Kyla, and the Insects propel themselves towards her like bullets from a Gatling gun.*

"Devil Sorcery #530: Burden Flare!"
*from the first bug, a slow, moving purple energy ball moves towards Kyla. Despite being called "Flare", it doesn't seem to be doing anything. However, the remaining cinders from Kyla's fireball attacks get drawn into it, and are extinguished. This shrinks the spell a bit, but it appears to be an energy nullifier.*

*Surrounding ghosts imbue themselves into the first insect, creating a new Scythe apparition around it. Shortly afterward, the ghosts form a new Murk body to hold it.

The new Apparition Murk swings the scythe and aims for Kyla's sword. The large blade stikes an adjacent tree, and cuts it like an actual scythe would. The slash is extremely venomous, and the tree quickly begins to corrode. Ghost or not, that scythe will quickly errode any weapon it touches. Let alone Kyla herself.*

User Image

"Those before me failed to kill you because they underestimated you. I'm a student of history, and I will not repeat their mistakes. My patience and persistence will kill you in the end."

*As the insect-Murk swings its sword, the other bugs pass through the main body like it was made of gas.*

(Raiden)

*Orlok an eyebrow at the wiggle butt. He sips his blood "wine" and points to Raiden.* "You would make a fine vampire with that charm, young one."

*He bears his fangs as he grins.* "Perhaps there is some potential for you. Very well. For now I shall refrain from devouring you. However, I have observed your battles so far....and your current powers are not quite enough to overcome Murk's Blood Magic. Return what is rightfully mine, my Nosferatu Heart that he stole, and I shall protect you and your allies from his Empathic Organ Curse."

*This vampire lord seems to be telling the truth, but there's no way to tell if he can be trusted. Fight or take a chance?*

(Kokujo)

"Devil Sorcery #573: Darkness Overload."

*From the particle cannon, the spell is cast and shoots a stream of shadows at Kokujo. The room becomes darker, and there doesn't seem to be anything extra to the shade.*

"Devil Sorcery #642 Re-Casting: Wisper."

*Murk's omnipresent voice, which had progressively become weaker with each word, is now fully audible once again. Though, he says nothing after this.*

*With this newfound darkness, it's possible for Kokujo to see things more easily than before. Murk is hiding right behind him, preparing to strike down at his head. An easy-enough target. The only thing that seems off is that the air around Murk seems colder than usual.*

Raiden remains composed as the soul gem shifts out of weapon form. However, if his internal reaction showed on the outside, Raiden's jaw would have punched through the floor and popped out on the other side of purgatory. He had hoped his confidence would work, but he's fairly shocked that it worked so well and so quickly. Instead of showing this surprise though, he wanders up to Orlok casually with a grin on his face.

Right? I mean why fight each other? That's been pretty much all we've done since we got here. Yokoshima is such a drama queen. I don't mind helping a bro out. I mean I figure...unless you're an asshat like Murk, you're pretty much here because you got screwed over...and not in a fun way. Might as well take an ally when you can find one. Besides, when you do get back to Gaia...well let's just say the world has changed a lot since you've been stuck in this tacky purgatory. Wanna know how you get simple minded shmucks to be your ever loyal servants in the modern age? You tell them you're a vampire. 100% guarantee they will just offer themselves as walking blood banks, no tricks, no deception. You just go, "Hey babe, I'm a vampire." Bam...instant harem. If some wandering heroic type has a problem with that...well...too bad. You can't rescue people who consented to being walking blood farms.

Kokujo raised a somewhat sceptical eyebrow at the shade-chigo mech awaiting him. He felt this sort of thing was much more in Corbenik’s wheelhouse rather than his own, but simultaneously was glad on this occasion that his excitable cohort was missing, otherwise he might need to suffer through Corbenik either trying to drive and/or dry hump the unfortunate mecha amalgam. Out of those Kokujo honestly wasn’t sure that scenario would hate the least.

Ejecting that unpleasant line of thought, Kokujo reasoned that regardless of his scruples about technology, anything to tip the balance of power in his favour during the fight would be invaluable against the sneaky Murk, however much he knew about Kokujo and his abilities, he probably wouldn’t be expecting this.

It seemed Kokujo had made up his mind not a moment too soon as the uneasy atmosphere was pierced once again by Murk casting another devil sorcery. As darkness descended over the perpendicular battlefield, a faint point of red light could be seen shining through from behind the fabric of Kokujo’s headband as his cursed eye passively heightened his awareness in the encroaching gloom. Every nook and crack, subtle details and movements of his surroundings began to fall into more and more clarifying detail. Of particular import; a close presence and a raised scythe telegraphing a sneak attack.

With the aid of the newly dulled surroundings it was easy enough for Kokujo to make a quick dodge, and Murk’s weapon sliced through nought but the faded air as Kokujo bounded forward and away from the attack. He twisted as he leaped, making a quick swinging motion with one arm to no immediately obvious effect, before landing next to the Ichigo/Shade mech suit which he wasted little time in pulling himself into.

“Hmf, not really my style… but I’ll have to make it work”

Even before the front hatch had fully closed around him, Kokujo threw out a metallic arm to grab hold of the accompanying tie-sword and roughly cleaved through the trunk before him, sending the bleak tree and hopefully its malicious occupant tumbling downwards as gravity took a hold.

With a twinkle of Ichigo’s badass shades, Kokujo fired a couple of small rocket boosters on his new suit, blasting himself airborne in a neat arc over the falling debris. He seemed to ignore Murk as he swung around instead to where the particle beam and devil sorcery had been cast from, Its location made clearer now by the thick blanket of darkness that now hung over them all.

Not to leave the apparent threat unattended though, Kokujo’s shuriken very shortly entered the scene, whirling sleekly through the air on its return journey from when last the disgruntled shadow mage tossed it, and aimed squarely towards the falling assassin in a mid-air pass deftly directed by Kokujo’s previous arm motion.

Kokujo however, chose to swiftly detach himself from that situation as he raced on to the source of the initial attack. He was very wary of the whole situation, knowing Murk - in spite of his simplistic motivations - was no fool. Why would he give Kokujo such an advantage with this shadow? Why would he recast a sorcery that allowed him to keep his position anonymous and then come out of hiding to engage him? And that chill in the air he had about him, it was just piercing enough to notice admit Kokujo’s sudden evasive action, what was that about? Kokujo didn’t trust the situation one but, he wouldn’t fall into a direct engagement, not until he could be sure of the situation anyway.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Look at me, now look at your scene, now back to me, the scene is now about Corbenik
As Kyla gave her badass speech to Brimmstone, Corbenik also turned his head, attempting to look comparatively badass, but as usually being somewhat let down by his stature, and the fact he had a silly grin on his face.
“S’right king oven-mitt” Corbenik raised a thumbs up “All you need to do is think of me and you’ll be completely fine” he assured him, with the term ‘assure’ being used in a sense so light that you could fill commercial blimps with it. There was of course no point at which Corbenik had not considered Brimmstone’s greatest possible memory of their passing meetings to be him.
The delusional Overdude turned around just in time to see a new ghost Murk forming in front of them amidst the swarm of angry bugs.
“ARGH, BEES!” Exclaimed Corbenik, rapidly relocating his body from a perch on Kyla’s shoulder to awkwardly clutching onto the back of her head, somehow reasoning that this gave him better protection. “Get rid of those needley flower snogging bastards” He instructed, ignoring that this was probably not Kyla’s prime concern right now, with a large poisoned blade swinging her way.
As was of course natural, Corbenik had concocted an ingenious plan for this though. “I’ve got this ghost stuff covered, I played a videogame about this once so we’re cool as a variety of uncomfortably phallic vegetables” he tried to assure his temporary partner as he produced a small Polaroid camera from somewhere on his suspiciously pocket-bereft body, pointing it as the scythe wielding apparition.
“Say Cheddar” the deranged cat instructed as he took a flash photograph of the approaching murderer, convinced this would solve all the pair’s problems, and perhaps also give him a Steam achievement “Mmm… cheeses”
"...cheddar..? Gah!" *Murk hesitates for a moment as Corbenik's camera flash distracts him. Out of all of his plans, he didn't expect Corbenik to use light of all things.* ""Meddlesome...."
User Image
*During this distraction, Brimmstone contemplates Kyla's words. Even after all of this, she would still consider him an ally. mouth is charred, so he can't speak. Or more accurately, his will and resolve had been damaged. He thinks to himself, 'I was so focused on avenging the past, that I had ignored the present. There were times where I could have been happy....but....it wasn't all bad. Comrades, eh...?'
Brimmstone, on the precipice of dreaming, thinks of his comrades in arms. He thinks about how if he had heeded their warnings, they wouldn't be in this situation. 'Midori. Varne. AMH. Sky Wolf......'
User Image
His thoughts trail off....and at the same time....Brimmstone's right boot falls off his foot, and into the twilight abyss below him. Horizon seems to react to them and the contents of his most recent thought. Instead of manifesting as a vision....something else happens. Ghosts surround the boot and form into something resembling a large blazing yellow comet. It bursts through the trees and lands in front of Kyla.
User Image
A huge charred wolf with burning wings emerges from the yellow flames. It leaps towards Murk with its gaping jaws, charring Murk and burning its head off in the process.
((Big surprise. I envision this happening to this music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tuWvGee4T0 ))
The great charred wolf seems highly unnatural, and not complete as an apparition. There are yellow flames emerging from where its eyes and teeth would be. It howls and flaps its wings, blowing away a bit of the ghost fog, revealing a more clear path of where the threads are coming from. The threads twist and weave through the trees upward, but at one point they loop back downward, like a rope in a pulley.
The strings are tugged, and Brimmstone begins to be whisked away once more. But this time...it's more clear where that will be. The wolf howls, then crumbles into ashes. The yellow flames and ashes fade away, leaving Brimmstone's oh-so-loyal boot. Strangely, the flames did not damage the twilight trees.
Despite being burned and having its head bitten off, the Murk distracted by Corbenik resumes its poisonous swing at Kyla's weapon, intending to corrode it upon impact.
*Murk's omnipresent voice echoes.* "Gya ha ha ha! What a pathetic attempt! I'll make as many of me as I need!"
As the scythe swings, another group of bugs split off to form another Murk. This one is younger, and is identical to one seen in the vision. Its blade is dripping with blood. It appears mid-air between Kyla and the retreating Brimmstone.*
*while the headless, charred Murk is swinging at Kyla's sword in front of her, the younger Murk swings his great axe and the blood travels like a cutting wave towards her from above and behind her.*
*Count Orlok raises a single finger upward* "You must act quickly. Murk can only activate the Empathic Curse within a short range, but your comrades are dealing with his long-range tactics at the moment. Find the source, Murk, and retrieve my Blood Organ. He is using Devil Sorcery #444: PuppeTendon to use the Southern King as bait. Murk is immobile right now, as a result. Well...it would be more accurate to say he's borrowing the power to do so. But consider....what are you willing to sacrifice for victory? Think carefully."
*He turns around. Blood dripping from the bone wings on his back, he flaps them to create a blood mist. The mist pushes back the ghost mist, and reveals the strings that bind Brimmstone. The string is diagonal to the the trees, and it seems to be retracting downward from where they are.*
"When you are in position, invoke my name, Count Orlok von Stoker, to this." *He hands Raiden a bone....literally a mandible.*
*Orlok flaps his wings and vanishes within a cloud of blood mist, leaving Raiden to his mission.*
(Kokujo)
*As Kokujo approaches the Particle Beam Cannon, a slicing sound can be heard. A myriad of branches fall downward from the tree directly above Kokujo. A buzzing sound can be heard, and one of the branches draws ghosts into it and changes it into a manifestation of a 16-year old Murk. The young reverend falls towards Kokujo and chants an incantation. He has a calm, almost bored, expression on his face.*
User Image
"Devil Sorcery #665: Dead Silence.
*The Murk's hand glows with a dark red aura and he slams it on the Shadechigo mech. The moment this happens, the branch bounces off harmlessly....but the buzzing persists. It gets progressively louder, and a single Plague insect lands in the cockpit. It exudes the weakest Devil Sorcery into the cockpit upon landing.
Despite the bug still moving its wings, the buzzing stops. All sound within the cockpit ceases. Complete silence envelops the cockpit. The insect is highly poisonous, and getting stung by it would be trouble. For now, it's just sitting there in the cockpit, waiting.*
Just then, another buzzing sound can be heard from the tree Kokujo is standing on. Another bug rises up and attracts ghosts, turning it into an image of Kold.*
User Image
"We're nothing but killers, you and I. Do you really think using Holy Magic will somehow make you redeemable? We're not heroes. Just do everyone a favor and die already."
*"Kold" jumps back and makes a Glacial Cannon motion. Though it seems to have come from behind him, the ice beam launches through his hand like normal. He runs out of sight. And then...*
User Image
Glacial Corridor!
*a ray of cold air touches the Shadechigo mech and Kold is pulled towards him. He grasps his sword and coats his blade in Dry Ice. He prepares a diving stab attack at Kokujo.*
"You're not getting away, Murk!"
(Kold....lol finally)
*Kold and Reishi proceed up the stairs. Kold laughs at the black cat's complaint about more stairs.* "An Ice PS4? ...right....though at least it wouldn't overheat if it was an IceBox 360, right Corbe....huh?"
User Image
"We appear to have been separated. Even I was caught off guard. This place....is different from the Horizon I'm used to."
*Kold gives Reishi an annoyed expression.* "Why didn't you say so earlier? You could have suggested we all stay together..."
User Image
"Because I had no idea this would happen. I've never been this far into the territory before." *He winces as he clutches the open wound on his torso.* "Be careful. If Murk had time to prepare, then he must know about this place's rules."
*Kold tries to send a telepathic message to his friends....* "I can't make a connection to the others. There's too many spirits here, too much interference. I guess we're cut off." *He looks forward and grips Sohi's hilt.* "So...Murk must have chosen this place on purpose. But then....why did he fight us when we first arrived?"
*X-chan exits Kold's coat, the size of the head of a pin. Apparently it's been hanging out there this whole time. It expands and stretches.*
User Image
"X-chan was all snoozy. Dramaz lol me to sleepz." *She nuzzles up to Kold* "Don't be sad Cowld! Ice cream is best way!" *It's unclear if X-chan is referring to his Ice Cream-mancy against the Whalephant, as a metaphor for "You'll figure this out" , or if it's just nonsense.*
*Kold sighs, and smiles as he scratches X-chan behind the head wings. X-chan wigglepurrs.*
*Murk's voice can be heard from everywhere. The omnipresent douchebag emerges to be a downer, as usual.*
"People are predictable. You strike against them, and they retaliate. All Yokoshima had to do was play the Baby Snatcher, and here you are. Expected."
*There is a the sound of a gatling gun firing nearby.*
I was tasked to play the crazy villain. It was easy. At the time, you didn't know the true me. Though, that was always the case. You were always so caught up in your own baggage to notice that I was more than just an excellent killer. Isn't that right, Beast of the Great Cataclysm?"
*There's a bright flash of light nearby. A laser?*
"Oh the things I have heard. They say the dead tell no tales, but they tell plenty in Hell. They hate you...the ones that aren't still with you, that is. Gya ha ha..."
*Buzzing can be heard from nearby. It appears to be from the tree Kold and Reishiare standing on. Ghosts flood into it, and the tree changes to resemble a pile of corpses.*
*Kold takes a step back. SQUISH!* "This....feels different. This feels like....." *Kold lifts his shoe and pieces of rotted flesh and blood slide off. It's no longer a tree.*
User Image
"The closer we get to Yokoshima's inner sanctum, the stranger this place gets. To think that even the landscape could shapeshift and become rea....
"Don't say it. This place relies on a strong mind and spirit to survive. Focus." *Kold doesn't want to admit that this is real. Several of the bodies they're standing on are ones burned into his memory. Yes. Victims of him from the Great Cataclsym, from his time in the Shin Guard, from his time as part of the Retsunin, and others.*
*From the tree, several bees rise up and lodge themself into Reishi's open wound. Ghosts are drawn to him and flood into Reishi, transforming him into....Kokujo?*
"Hmf. How much longer will it be until you kill me? It's only a matter of time." *He grabs his Southern Cross and points it at Kold.* "I have peered into your soul. Do you have the slightest clue as to why you have psychic power? Do you honestly believe that to be YOUR ability alone? Think carefully."
*Kold glares at "Kokujo"* "This is your grand plan, Murk? To have me fight Kokujo? I know this is a fake, and Reishi has an immortal body. How stupid do you think I am?"
*"Kokujo" removes his headband and opens his cursed eye.* "You still don't understand. Then you can die ignorant." *The area grows dark and clouded.*
*Kold looks around. Despite his enhanced vision in the dark as a Toukan, he still can't make out the surroundings because of the ghost fog. He concentrates, lowering the temperature of the surrounding area. He can't make a psychic connection, but he should be able to detect heat signatures. 'Perhaps....he can even mimick Kokujo's powers in this place. I agree with Kyla....I hate this place. I need to find her and warn her.' *
*Kold wanders and eventually notices the heat signature of a mechanical object. It seems to have been the source of that light earlier. He hears Kokujo nearby and....
SLASH!
*Kold reflexively shoots a Glacial Cannon at the direction the attack came from, but there's no target.*
*"Kokujo" 's Southern Cross connects with his back, leaving a nasty gash. 'I guess I have no choice....'*
*The Southern Cross returns to Kokujo's hand, and buzzing can be heard, possibly from two sources. There appears to be a machine sitting nearby, which Kokujo climbs into. Kold can just make out a Black Kat Industries insignia on it before it flies off. 'Kokujo using a mech for combat? I highly doubt that. You won't get away this time...' Kold powers through, ignoring the pain....which is actually useful for once, given this place. He's not EVEN leaking blood and spinal fluid profusely.*
(Kokujo)
*As the mech-clad Kokujo approaches the Particle Beam Cannon...*
"Glacial Corridor! *He launches a wide ray of cold air, which connects with Kokujo. He uses Psychokinesis to pull himself to Kokujo's position and grasps his sword, coating his sword in Dry Ice...*
Kokujo’s attention was abruptly drawn by the sound of cracking branches above him, and his gaze quickly met the visage of the descending Murk conjured from the felled branches. In reaction Kokujo brought his mech’s tie sword round in a swift arc towards his assailant, though it seemed his reaction had not come quite fast enough, and the dapper blade cleaved through nothing but deadened sticks after their previous form had deposited Murk’s sorcery.
Kokujo glanced around for any more signs of the younger Murk, finding none, but presuming the strike to have done something more than had met the eye, as seemed prudent when fighting the deranged assassin. That annoying buzzing he’d heard just served to reinforce this sentiment, and as a twisted looking insect rose from the scenery and began gathering spirits, he became better aware as to the cause. He could have sworn that bug looked familiar to him, but from where he couldn’t quite place as view of it was shortly blocked as it assumed the form of his frosty companion.
“You must take me for a fool, Murk…” Kokujo scoffed at the obvious conjuration, or at least he would have if any sound had escaped his mouth. Instead, only jarringly acute silence permeated the cockpit.
”so, that’s what the devil sorcery earlier must have been for. ‘Dead Silence’; makes sense” the shadow mage thought, but the real question was why. Considering how little Kokujo tended to say in general, silencing him hardly seemed to serve any purpose. This had to come together somehow, Murk had to have some plan for this.
Catching his shuriken - clasped somewhat awkwardly in the larger mech hand - Kokujo readied himself as he saw the fake Kold prepared to cast his Glacial Cannon. He had to assume, at least for now, that the phantoms could mimic powers as well as forms. Something seemed off about the way he cast it though, but as Kokujo raised his shuriken like a shield and took the brunt of the glacial cannon on Shadichigo’s left arm, he found it no less potent than the real deal.
”hmf, interesting, but something still doesn’t add up” Kokujo considered as he readied his sword arm for a defence. He could feel the reactions of the mech slow, joints temporarily chilled by the previous ice attack. Knowing he’d have little chance to dodge in this state, he prepared Shadichigo’s tie sword for a parry as the glacial corridor connected, pulling Kold towards him.
"You're not getting away, Murk!"
”Murk?!”
Kokujo’s surprise at Kold’s unexpected exclamation cost him a shallow slash across his ad-hoc mecha’s chest plate. He barely managed to raise his own weapon in time, diverting the stab as it descended and using the momentum to twist the blade around so the two weapons were locked. At least for now, this would buy Kokujo some precious moments.
Things were starting to make some semblance of sense now. Murk’s peculiar strategy, the obfuscation, the way-too-obvious Kold clone. Kokujo fancied that he had an idea of what Murk’s plan was, how insidious indeed. Had Kokujo not seen Murk’s cunning previously he may have not assumed the solipsistic psychopath had the smarts to pull of such a strategy. The question now however, was how - even if he was correct - could he get through to Kold?
Could he even say anything to convince Kold it was him and not Murk? Certainly not currently as his efforts to make sound were frustrated by Murk’s earlier sorcery. He could sense the insect as it moved silently around, creating subtle ripples in the aethereal fabric of the shadows, and radiating unnerving sensations of mortal dread that would be surprising for a mere bug, at least had Kokujo not had a fair guess as to where, or whom, it had come from. He didn’t have time to spare hunting it down right now though, yet he had a plan B, or hoped so, but how to get Kold’s attention…
Then it abruptly came to him, he remembered Kold’s psychic message to him earlier. Of course, Kold was telepathic! Surely if he could make a connection, Kold would know Kokujo was real. The disturbed flows of magics cast into chaos by the spirits had perhaps blocked this ability somewhat, but Kokujo reckoned if he could just get close enough…
Channelling his shadowmancy through shadichimech, the metallic suit’s ample shadow suddenly grew, casting itself long across the branch the combatants were standing on, and splitting off into many clawed limbs that looked to try and attack Kold from the back. This however, was just a distraction tactic. Kokujo needed to divert Kold’s attention, split his focus for just a moment to assure an element of surprise for his next move.
Suddenly Kokujo popped the front hatch of the mech, practically throwing himself out of the mechanised armour at his frosty rival. As his did so, his good arm shot out, aiming to grab the frost ninja by the forehead. If that wasn’t close enough for Kold’s telepathy to work, Kokujo didn’t know what would be. As he was now outside of the cockpit, Murk’s silencing would, he reasoned, be nullified, though he only had time to string together a few short words to try and sway his bitter frienemy into meeting him halfway.
“KOLD! USE PSYCHIC!” He shouted, not really considering the word choice, so long as the point was made.
Of course, there was always the chance this Kold was actually just a puppet, that Kokujo had been fooled again, but at this point he had more to gain than to lose by trying. If he could break Murk’s isolation strategy, then there was a chance.
*Kold's blade nearly connects, but "Kokujo" manages to defend in time.
'Not bad Murk. You can even imitate Kokujo's style. Or could it be...?'
Before he could ponder further, Kold notices the shadow claws and forms an adamant ice shell on his back, which protects him from the back attacks.
'Distraction tactic. I've had enough of those already,' he thinks to himself.
Despite his quick thinking, it's just enough time to stall for Kokujo's next move. Kold sheathes his blade and coats it with adamant ice within the scabbard. He'll finish this with a single drawing slash.
*Kold's caught off guard when Kokujo's mechanical arm grabs his head and causes his hand to slip. He nearly drops the sword, but catches it with his other hand.
'Psyhic...Of course!'He had been so focused on his opponent, he didn't pay attention to what was happening around them.He had to risk it.*
"Eis Doppel." (Ice Double)
*Kold forms an ice double where he was, then kicks off it and does the drawing slash to the right of him. The force knocks Kokujo back into the cockpit, and the ice sculpture slams against the cockpit, squishing the bug against it in the process. The ice sculpture drops to the ground like a rock, yet remaining intact.*
*Kold draws his blade and it's covered in a strange crystalline ice substance, freezing slowly freezing over the previous ice lining his blade. It's comparable to an ice sculpture being frozen over by something colder, as if the sculpture was made of marble or something.
He slashes in a circular motion around himself, drawing the circumference with this new ice. The strange ice moves from the blade to the circular area around him. With the ice gone, he sheathes the sword slowly....
"Ougi: Kyuure." (Secret Technique: Nine's Zero)
*when the sword "Clicks" back into its scabbard, the ice ring shatters. Tiny ice crystals, the size of dust, disperse all around the area. The temperature drastically dives into the realm of near absolute zero temperatures, and nearly everything within a nine-meter radius around Kold is affected.
One of the ice crystals falls on the ice sculpture, and something strange happens. The best way to describe it is to say, "The ice is flash frozen". The sculpture quickly changes to this new kind of ice, from head to toe, and shatters.*
"Ice-Nine. When it comes into contact with liquid water, the water serves as a seed crystal, and it quickly all becomes ice nine. If a body of water is within reach of Ice-Nine, the entire thing is converted too quickly."
*Kold turns around. He sees a swarm of bugs frozen in mid-air, now resembling transluscent ice crystals. These deadly, poisonous creatures now looked like odd snowflakes hanging in the air. They drop one by one, shattering against the tree below.*
"This technique is still not perfected. I'm glad Kokujo convinced me in time. Otherwise..." He shakes his head and walks over to the Shadechigo Mech.*
*Kold breathes heavily, fatigued.*
*He knocks on the hatch* "You somehow manage to earn even more of my respect, Kokujo. You've got real courage." *He laughs a bit.* "That technique was meant for Yokoshima....but it's not perfected yet..."
*Reishi falls to the floor, his body shattering....but does not melt away. His spirit floats above the mess.*
"To think that you had such a terrying technique. But you'd lose everything if your allies were near..."
*one part of Reishi's body was not converted into Dry Ice. His heart. It's bleeding an odd green ooze, but it's still beating. With each new beat, green lightning flashes from it. It's very slight, but it seems to be growing larger with each beat. Or it would be more accurate to say: the heart is regenerating the organs around it.*
"From the day I was struck by that Ancient Monster, I've been like this. I had thought that technique of yours could finish me off, but it doesn't seem to be the case."
*Just then, a tendril shoots up through the tree and pierces the Reishi Heart. It reels it in. Despite Brimmstone being dragged far up into the trees, this hints that Murk is further down than expected.*
You know...I thought fighting you was going to be difficult Murk...you're a creep for sure and pretty tough. But you're not very swift on the uptake are you? I guess most are thrown off by how gross you are and that's enough to intimidate them. But you've made a really dangerous mistake...yet again. You took your eyes off Corbenik again.
*Kyla shifts her focus to Brimmstone who's being pulled away. She had feared cutting his threads might hurt him, but now is unwilling to have Brimmstone separated from the group. She drops down on all fours. A golden light sparks around her hands and feet and seems to build up power. She then leaps into the air, propelled by the golden energy and slices at Brimmstone's tethers with Hien. Her intention is to sever the ties, catch Brimmstone, and land*
Raiden takes the bone in one hand. Ashura's soul gem shifts to a gauntlet on his other hand
Guess I should follow this thread. Here we go!
Raiden jumps up and grabs the the red thread with his gauntleted hand. A small burst of flame erupts from the back of it, propelling Raiden forward like he's riding a zipline. It twists and turns manically until Kyla's fight gradually comes into view and he realizes what the red thread is attached to.
Right at the moment when Kyla says "...took your eyes off Corbenik". Raiden lets go of the line and uses his gauntlet to aim himself towards Murk. He aims carefully, then throws the mandible straight at the Murk madness and shouts
SURPRISE SEXY VAMPIRE ********! I INVOKE COUNT ORLOK VON STOKER IN ATTACK MODE!
(Kold)
As Reishi's heart is snagged by the demonic thread, Kold quickly forms an ice pillar beneath him to propel him towards the thread and grabs onto it. He'll use Reishi's heart as bait to end this.*
(Brimmstone)
*As the tethers are cut, a red light flashes on Brimmstone's back. Upon closer inspection, there's a timed bomb strapped to his back, camouflaged by soot.
The thread was fed into it was "the wire not to cut if you want to deactivate the bomb". The device has an eerie Black Kat Industries insignia on it, and a timer with bright red numbers counting down from 10.....9....8...
*In that moment, blood pours out of the bone and generates Count Orlok von Stoker.*
User Image
*He's cut off (heh) when Raiden activates him between the two Murks' attacks. Since Kyla moved out of the way to go after Brimmstone, Orlok is essentially right where Kyla was...between the two copy-Murks' attacks. He's promptly sliced in half...with a stream of blood connecting his chopped off torso.*
"I believe I told you to summon me when you reached the source...." *The stream of blood moves and reconnects the two halves back into one body, not concerned with his superficial wound.
He flicks his wings and sends blood needles outwards, which slice through the bugs, washing away the control Murk had over the souls in Horizon.*
"What an odd realm. To think Mercutio could bring The Fallen's insects here...." *he turns to Raiden.* "Follow that thread to its source. The true Mercutio Crallows will be there."
*Orlok sends a trail of blood down the thread in front of Raiden. They should be able to reach the source that way.*
“Oof!” Kokujo let out a sharp breath as he was abruptly shoved back into his friendly neighbourhood mech suit. For a moment he had to wonder whether he’d been successful at his gambit, but had to concede that if he hadn’t been, Kold could have simply just stabbed him the old fashioned way. The lack of the annoying presence of that lone insect in the peripherals of his mind’s eye, crushed by the sculpture, also supported this.
As he saw Kold beginning his attack he quickly closed up Shadichigo’s hatch, standing clear as Kold demonstrated his frighteningly destructive new technique, and observing its effects with great interest. So, that must have been the power he had sensed earlier, when they were fighting their strange doppelgangers. When had Kold created such a technique? In spite of his usual prideful nature Kokujo found himself impressed by the creative and destructive combination.
Upon Kold’s knocking, Kokujo opened up the mech’s hatch once more, leaning out slightly as the frozen insects dropped down around them, shattering into puffs of glistening powdered crystals as they hit the perpendicular trees. He took a second to observe the icy destruction left in his frosty companions wake, doing a good job as usual of downplaying his interest in the cryomancer’s skill.
“Hmf, and it seems you continue to be full of interesting surprises” Kokujo acknowledged, dusting off a few remaining ice crystals left from his rough interaction with Kold’s ice sculpture “Regardless though, we can’t take a breather just yet, we may have gotten through Murk’s trap here, but Murk himself is still out there somewhere, as are Kyla and Raiden” he continued.
Kokujo knew better than to underestimate tenacity of the brother-sister combo, but at the same time, who knew what else Murk had up his sleeve. The quicker they could find and defeat the real Murk, the less risk he posed to all of them. Almost on que Reishi’s slowly regenerating heart was pierced with a slim thread, getting dragged back down into the ominous misty forest. Looks like they had a lead.
Kokujo ducked back into the confines of the Shadichigo mech, diving off the tree after his frosty companion, making use of the magical robot’s back thrusters to give him the speed needed to follow after Kold and the rapidly retracting threat. Now Murk’s illusions had been broken once, Kokujo knew it was important to keep Kold within his sights, lest Murk try to catch them both in another trap.
Meanwhile…
Corbenik watched as Brimmstone’s boot exacted its fiery, wolfy vengeance on Murk. He threw his stubby arms up, index figures pointed towards the now headless Murk (as much as was possible with paws anyway).
“Hah! Get Okami’d on, son!” he taunted, quickly retrieving a small smartphone from somewhere on his person and prodding one of the buttons, causing the device to emit a poorly sampled sound clip of an airhorn in response. He quickly noted however, as Murk proceeded to create another Murk while lacking a head, that he may have been severely less Okami’d than previously thought.
“Well that’s disappointing… your shoes suck Brimmstone!” he berated their red-headed-mostly-deaded companion, before having to grip onto Kyla’s shoulder and his likely stolen smartphone for dear life as she left up to cut the cords holding the grumpy demigod, unfortunately revealing the hidden explosive in the process.
Corbenik blinked, then turned to his phone again, “Giri…” he said, prompting a chime in response from the handheld device “…How to defuse time bomb, for beginners?” he then stated. The device seemed to consider this for a moment before soothing voice spoke up in reply “From Gaiahoo Answers: Top rated answer: Kill yourself, you cis misogynistic racist gay furry immigrant”.
“Damnit Internet! You’ve failed me for the last time!” Corbenik shook his phone in anger before suddenly pausing as if struck by a fantastic idea, one that was probably only marginally more likely to succeed than his phone’s previous suggestion “Waaaait a second, furry….fur, that’s it!” he abruptly declared, jumping awkwardly from Kyla to the defunct pyromancer. He then preceded to rub the plastic back of his portable device quite vigorously against the top of his head for a few moments. Once satisfied with this (at least in his quickly dwindling timeframe), Corbenik flopped over Brimmstone’s back, anchoring himself by wrapping his tail quite unceremoniously around the heavenly king’s head, putting himself face-to-face with the sooty explosive and its feline logo.
“Hey there, handsome”
Flexing one of his paws he gingerly moved an outstretched finger near to the metallic surface of the explosive device. When close enough there was a bright blue flash of an electric arc as the static charge Corbenik had generated earlier eagerly discharged between the explosive device and himself. It seemed his grand plan was to use the sudden shock to disable the timer of the explosive… or it would just cause it to explode even faster possibly rending the ethereal form of Brimmstone’s manifested soul into tiny overcooked giblets. Corbenik figured this was a win-win situation though.
