Bethany wandered through the forest of books to the kitchen. It was the only room in the house that didn't have books piled all around. It had the basic amenities, a microwave, a stove, sink, fridge, cabinets, and the back door. The only thing that looked out of place here was a desk, set against the wall next to the refridgerator. On the desk was a computer. Beth decided to pull out some steaks and pan fry them for supper, and make some mashed potatoes and white gravy to go with them. She was humming along as she cooked, fighting back the occasional sneeze.

I passed by a shop that had a "Help Wanted" sign on the window. I figured I would probably need money to stay in civilization, so I walked into the small little shop. As soon as I walked in I knew I had to get this job. It was a small book store that seemed to split down the middle; half was pure fiction and the other half was all non-fiction.
There was a small kindly looking old lady on the other side of the counter who looked up as I entered. "Are you here to buy something young man?" she asked me with a voice that seemed too young for her appearance. "Actually I'm here about the sign in your window." she looked at me kind of funny and replied with a small wrinkled grin, "How much do you want for it?" I chuckled at her wit and said, "Allow me to rephrase my remark mad'am. I'm here about the job if you would be so kind as to tell me what it is?" she thought for a moment and said, "I just need someone to clean the shop up every few days and help manage the counter for a few hours while I do my daily errands." I looked around the shop again and decided this place could use some cleaning and I do love books, I had made my decision. "I'll take the job if you'll have me." I said. "Great! When can you start?" she asked taking out a form of employment. "How about tomorrow?" I asked incase she wanted me to work today. "That would be perfect." she beamed as she wrote something down on the form. "Now what is your name young man?" she asked while looking up at me. I replied "Joshua Shield." She nodded as she wrote my name down at the top. "Alright Joshua, can you please be here by 7:00 in the morning so you can get to work early?" I nodded and replied,"Yes ma'am." and with that I walked back outside. Looking to the sky I could tell I was gone for almost a half-hour and decided to head back to Bethany's place.
Getting to her house was pretty easy as I just followed the little landmarks I memorized. I walked into the house and said,"Hey Bethany I just got my self a job at a book store, with a woman who seems very kind and nice as my boss."

"Susan?" Bethany asked from the kitchen as she turned off the stove and started pulling down dishes from the cabinets for them to eat off of. "Oh, you'll like her. She's very sweet, and will let you buy as many books as you want." she replied with a grin. "I spend what little spare money I have over there. I keep promising to bring some of my older books back for exchange but..." she shrugged. "I hate to part with them, really. Oh, I didn't know how you liked your steak, so I cooked it medium well... I hope that's alright..."

I smiled at Bethany and said,"Thats perfect. Thank you very much for the food. Your hospitality knows no bounds it seems." I sat down and looked at the wonderful smelling meat. My mouth began to water as I was about to grab the steak and just tear it apart with my teeth. Then I remembered where I was and stopped myself from grabbing the steak. Picking up the fork and knife I looked at Bethany and asked,"Do you say grace?" waiting for her to answer seemed like an eternity with the smell of the steak right under my nose.

She raised an eyebrow at him. "Grace? Why would I say grace?" she asked. Ahhhh, to be so young and naive and so very certian that there is no higher power involved in their lives, right? "And don't worry about your manners, just make sure you clean up after yourself if you make a mess." she said with a shrug. She got out a couple of glasses and walked over to the fridge. "Tea, soda, or kool-aid?" she asked with a grin. "There's no alchohol in the house. I'm too young to buy any. Sorry."

I mimicked her eyebrow in a comical fashion and said,"Would you happen to have some hot chocolate, I could make it as long as you have the ingredients." I then looked at the steak and untensils in my hands and set the knife down. Stabbing the steak with my fork I took a bite and savored the taste of the first bite of meat I'd had in little over a week. "So you don't believe in the almighty? Or just the the whole after life in general?" I said forgetting about my earlier question of hot cocoa.

Beth held her breath for just a moment, staving off yet another sneeze. She was not going to let herself be sick while having a guest in her house in... well since the last roommates moved out. She put the glasses back in the cabinet and pulled down a couple of large coffee mugs. "Do you prefer instant cocoa, or old-fashioned?" she asked, giving herself time to form an answer for him. "As far as an after-life or some kind of divine power. I'm not sure. There is no scientific evidence either way, is it stands right now."

"Either one works for me." I said before taking another bite of the steak. "This steak is wonderful Bethany, if all your cooking is as good as this I'll have to jog more frequently." I said while taking a bite of the mashed potatoes.

Bethany blushed just a little bit at the compliment. "And I was worried that I was rusty. It's been a while since I've had an excuse to make more than a sandwich for a meal..." she admits as she sets a pot of water on the stove to boil. She then pulled out a box of Swiss Miss cocoa packets, dumping the contents of two packets into each cup. The girl had not even taken a bite of her meal yet, as she rummaged around in a drawer for some spoons. "I'm glad you like it. If you decide to stay, or even just visit, I'll be sure to actually cook more often." she said sheepishly.

"I would like that very much." I said while finishing the mashed potatoes and my steak. "So what got you hooked on books Bethany?" I said trying to pass some time waiting for the cocoa to finish and interested to hear what this girl's story is. I looked out the window for a brief instant and saw the moon and immediatly I had to resist the urge to howl. Looking back to Bethany I waited for her response.

The teapot whistled and she grabbed a potholder while turning off the burner. "I don't know. My mother and father were always reading things to me... for as long as I can remember. I guess being a bookworm kinda runs in the family." she said with a nervous laugh as she poured the steaming hot water into the mugs. She set the teapot back onto the stove, and then stirred the water and cocoa mix in the mugs before handing him one. "Careful, it's probably a bit hot. I like my water hot enough to just about scald my tongue." She took a careful sip from her cup, and then finally started cutting up her steak.

I gently blew into the mug and took a drink. "Ah, nothing like a good mug of hot cocoa after a good steak, and in good company." I said watching Bethany begin to eat her food. "So both your parents were bookworms eh? What were their jobs?" I asked wondering what type of people they were.
(Night, thanks for rping with me.)

Bethany quickly gulped down the bite in her mouth so she wouldn't talk with her mouth full. "Mom is a chemist for a pharmacuetical company, and dad is a geologist." she replied.
[Night! Hope to see you tomorrow, Doc!]

I nodded as I took another drink of my cocoa. I looked out the window again and felt a longing to run outside and just howl but I had long since learned how to control my urges. "Thats pretty impressive work your parents do. How about you do you have a job?" I asked as I stood up and closed the blinds then returned to my seat. "Sorry I was beginning to feel a bit cool, please continue." I explained as for the reason I shut the blinds.

Bethany looked confused. "But it's the middle of sum...mer..." she said and then realized that it was less than a week away from the next full moon. "Oh...." she said, swallowing a little nervously. "I... um... work at the local coffee shop. It's just until a real company thinks I'm old enough to really work in my field."
