At the time of a deliberation concerning criminals, Nakano Kazuma proposed making the punishment one degree lighter then what would be appropriate. This is a treasury of wisdom that only he was the possessor of. At that time, though there were several men in attendance, if it had not been for Kazuma alone, no man would have opened his mouth. For this reason he is called Master Commencement and Master Twenty-five Days. As Shiro scratched his head it felt good but it did little to increase his understanding of the piece. He was beginning to wonder if he was even capable of understanding the wisdom contained contained in Hagakure, Maybe he was going about it the wrong way or something? Despite being clueless twice in a row there had to be something that he could make sense of inside the book.

Although it stands to reason that a shinobi should be mindful of the Way of the Shinobi, it would seem that we are all negligent. Consequently, if someone were to ask, "What is the true meaning of the Way of the Shinobi?" the person who would be able to answer promptly is rare. This is because it has not been established in one's mind beforehand. From this, one's unmindfulness of the Way can be known. Negligence is an extreme thing. Shiro smiled lightly as he stumbled across something that he actually understood. So I must always be mindful of the Way and never forget my purpose as a shinobi or in other words I shouldn't neglect the Way of the Shinobi by forgetting what it stands for. There was certainly wisdom in this but it still didn't teach Shiro what the Way of the Shinobi actually was. So he would have to continue his search in the hopes that he would discover what that Way was.

To hate injustice and stand on righteousness is a difficult thing. Furthermore, to think that being righteous is the best one can do and todo one's utmost to be righteous will, on the contrary, bring many mistakes. The Way is in a higher place than righteousness. Shiro stared blankly at the words printed on the page. But how could the Way be more important than righteousness? If you always try to do what is right it must be very hard to do what is wrong? It was indeed perplexing but there was more to this piece than just that. This is very difficult to discover, but it is the highest wisdom. When seen from this standpoint, things like righteousness are rather shallow. If one does not understand this on his own, it cannot be known. Shiro snorted as he read the last part. Well I get that last part at least, so I guess we're at an understanding on that point.

Oh hey, it's explains the Way of the Shinobi in this part. thought Shiro as he found a follow up to the piece that he had understood earlier. The Way of the Shinobi is found in death. When it comes to either/or. there is only the quick choice of death. It is not particularly difficult. Be determined and advance. To say that dying without reaching one's aim is a dog's death is the frivolous way of sophisticates. When pressed with the choice of life or death, it is not necessary to gain one's aim. Shiro frowned as he red the passage. Well I certainly understand what he is saying but I definitely don't agree with it. If you just throw your life away you'll never accomplish anything. Of course this passage was quite long and understanding the whole thing was probably going to take some more time to not only read but to understand.

For a shinobi, a single word is important no matter where he may be, By just one single word martial valor can be made apparent. In peaceful times words show one's bravery. In troubled times, too, one knows that by a single word his strength or cowardice can be seen. This single word is the flower of one's heart. It is not something that is said simply with one's mouth. Shiro frowned as he was unable to make the spiritual connection that the piece was pointing out. His mind could not comprehend speaking from the heart like the piece described. Well words come out of the mouth, so unless there's a second mouth over your heart I don't see myself speaking from the heart anytime soon. With no understanding of the current piece Shiro had no choice but to move on and look for a different passage.

A little peeved with the last piece Shiro decided to go back to the longer passage about the Way from earlier. We all want to live. And in large part we make our logic according to what we like. But not having attained our aim and continuing to live is cowardice. This is a thin dangerous line. To die without gaining one's aim is a dog's death and fanaticism. But there is no shame in this. This is the substance of the Way of the Shinobi. If by setting one's heart right every morning and evening, one is able to live as though his body were already dead, he gains freedom in the Way. His whole life will be without blame, he will succeed in his calling. Shiro almost gasped as he connected the two parts together. To run from death certainly is dumb, if I'm not afraid to die and live like I already am dead then I can accomplish anything I want to! With the connection made and the passage understood it was time to look for more wisdom.

When on the battlefield, if you try not to let others take the lead and have the sole intention of breaking into the enemy lines, then you will not fall behind others, your mind will become fierce, and you will manifest martial valor. This fact has been passed down by the elders. Furthermore, if you are slain in battle, you should be resolved to have your corpse facing the enemy. There it was a again, a simple truth reveled when one is not afraid of death. By always striving to be at the front you will never fall behind others no matter what the subject is, but especially in terms of battle. Also to be resolved to face the enemy even in death means that you never surrendered and continued to fight until the end. Nothing could be more honorable. There was wisdom in this. I see, never give up, never surrender, and always resolve to take the lead.

Before Shiro could continue reading from Hagakure something highly unexpected happened. As he leaned back to yawn the chair reached a point where the center of gravity was too far off for him to maintain balance. In an instant Shiro started on an uncontrollable decent towards the floor. What? Damn! In a matter of seconds the chair collided with the ground causing Shiro to spill out and hit his head on the floor. "Owww, Ow, Ow," he let out in a forced whisper as he rubbed the back of his head. Ugh, why isn't it written in that stupid book that "One should not lean back in a chair"? After slowly getting back to his feet Shiro righted the chair and looked it over to make sure that it wasn't broken or damaged during the crash. With that issue resolved it was time to get back to the training of his mind. Okay Hagakure, where were we?

With Hagakure in hand Shiro eagerly browsed the pages of the book looking for the next piece of wisdom that he could absorb. It is spiritless to think that you cannot attain to that which you have seen and heard the masters attain. The masters are men. You are also a man. If you think that you will be inferior in doing something, you will be on that road very soon. Master Ittei said, "Hashirama was a Kage because he had the will to become a leader when he was fifteen years old. He was not a Kage because he fought later on." This is the same as the Bhuddhist maxim, "First intention, then enlightenment." A hand quickly came to cover Shiro's mouth as he struggled to contain his laughter. Like I didn't know that already! The whole reason that I'm here is because I've resolved to surpass Tobirama duh. Shiro had already begun to use this piece of wisdom before ever reading it for sure but he had never had such an elegant way to put what he was doing into words.

Lord Sanenori said, "In the midst of a single breath, where perversity cannot be held, is the Way." If so, then the Way is one. But there is no one who can understand this clarity at first. Purity is something something that cannot be attained except by piling effort upon effort. Shiro's barely contained laughter from before was completely silenced by the time that he had finished reading the passage. Eh? If no one gets its at first what's the point of writing it? he questioned. Though, the way to understanding the quote is listed. Despite not understanding the quote at the current moment the way to understand it in the future was available so with "piling effort upon effort" he would come to understand it in the future. With no other choice but to come to understand the quote in the future Shiro was forced to move on in search for more wisdom that he could come to understand.

The priest Tannen used to say, "People come to no understanding because priests teach us only the doctrine of 'No Mind.' What is called 'No Mind' is a mind that is pure and lacks complication." This is interesting. Shiro was a little confused about the meaning of the passage before him. If a mind is pure and lacking in complication that person should have a clear mind and yet the priest Tannen was declaring that as the cause of a lack of understanding. Well if your mind is complicated then I guess you've got a lot going on up stairs so you see things from more angles? Well at least that's the best that I can get out of that. As he thought about the passage Shiro gently scratched the top of his head in an unconscious response to his deep thought. He was by no means certain that he understood what the priest Tannen had been trying to say but for all intents and purposes he had his own interpretation of it.

What is called generosity is really compassion. In the Shin'ei it is written, "Seen from the eye off compassion, there is no one to be disliked. One who has sinned is to be pitied all the more." There is no limit to the breadth and depth of one's heart. There is room enough for all. That we still worship the sages of the three ancient kingdoms is because their compassion reaches us yet today. This passage was fairly simple, it was basically just love thy neighbor. Shiro could understand it easily enough but it was certainly difficult to actually do. For an eleven year old boy what could be harder than being nice to someone who was a jerk to you first. Despite this he did always try to follow his dad's advice and be nice everyone because the easiest way to get rid of an enemy is to make him into a friend.

Hagkure let off a quiet "tack" as its spine hit the table. Shiro had set the book down in order to go take a short bathroom break. He quietly left the table to head for the library's bathroom which was located a few rows of shelves away from the table. Not being in much of a rush he took his sweet time before returning back to his study table. The young boy tried to flip through the pages in search of more wisdom but for some unknown reason he just couldn't concentrate on the book at the moment. Urg, why does this just seem so boring right now? he asked himself as he stared blankly at the pages of Hagakure. Perhaps he'd been cooped up in the library for far too long and a build up of energy that was starting to get to him. What ever it was Shiro was just totally unable to concentrate on his task. Maybe I'll feel like reading in a few minutes?" he thought as he closed his eyes and tried to relax.

According to their nature, there are both people who have quick intelligence, and those who must withdraw and take time to think things over. Looking into this thoroughly, if one thinks selflessly and adheres to the four vows of the Nabeshima Shinobi, surprising wisdom will occur regardless of the high or low points of one's nature. Despite his short break from reading Hagakure Shiro's attention was still else where and despite reading the passage he hadn't really paid any attention while reading it. He tapped his fingers rapidly on the research table as a sign of his anxious state. There was just something keeping him from concentrating and he couldn't figure out what it was exactly. Maybe I've just been in this stupid library for too long or something.

With zero focus at the current point in time all Shiro could do was fidget around his seat. He did everything that he could while in the chair except for actually studying. He continued to tap his fingers aloud, wonder how old the librarian was, read the name of every book that he could see, and change positions in his chair. With no other idea of what he could possibly do Shiro tried to re-read the passage. After going back through the passage he let out a big sigh. After all of that I still don't get it because I have no idea what, or who the Nabeshima Shinobi are. Let alone what their four vows are.
