Brute strength is nice.

Gunna make an example here, and I mean no disrepect to the guy.

Saphen's character last year was a good example of why the kiting type character is no fun.

Every single post of his was his character retreating, while still being able to engage in melee if his opponent got close, but throwing ranged attacks constantly if he wasn't.

It isn't exactly fun, exciting, and borderline fair to have a guy being forced to chase someone around while getting attacked.

Absolutely nothing prevents someone from buying Strong up to Hits like a Hueg Gai, then Melee Combat up to Swordsman, and then going and buying powers.

O.o

People do it all the time without points. Why would people switch that when numbers are involved?

anyways, afk

It's not a huge no-no, Snow, but most fighters don't think of building a melee fighter that's going to step into the ring and then run from their opponent.

Quite simply by stereotyping and the history of roleplay, kiting characters are generally ranged fighters and spellcasters.

When someone thinks of a melee fighter, they think "How can I make my character strong, durable, and somewhat different? I want him to have strength, staying power, and maybe a cool weapon."

It's just a gernal stereotype and mindset. That's all.

Oh, just playing defensive?

That's cool for the most part.

Unless you take it to the extreme of...

"I'm just going to stand here, wait for you to come at me, and counter everything you do and laugh at you while I do it."

This is true, but its the strength of the Hueg Gai they could build, and then the strength of the powers they could build up to with the left-over points is what I'm getting at, Ross. The limitation to this would all depend on how you, the creator of the scaling system, decided to make the requirements work.

If you have 600 points, and to make a general HUEG GAI it costs 450 points to get the strengths you want, you're not gonna have 450 points to go and buy spells with. You'll have 150 left over, which means anything you buy beyond HUEG GAI stats is going to be inherently weaker.

That's what I'm getting at. You could probably build a decent melee fighter and decent spell caster with a 300/300 split, or 350/250 -- 250/350 allocation or something similar.

But because you're talking about points to build up to something stronger, you're going to have those differences in scaling.

EDIT: And, in freeform with no limits you can create an Ertai and no one can really say s**t to you about it. You can be a badass melee fighter, awesome gunslinger great archer, and have complete mastery of seventeen variable elements, robotics, and you can talk to animals.

But when you apply a point syste to it, you force people to make decisions and trade-offs for what they want or need for their character to work, instead of just being good at everything inherently. So a nuke-mage in a point system will never fight in H2H like Bruce Lee. And a Bruce Lee or "World's Strongest Man" would never cast a spell with anything even similar to the effectiveness of even a low-grade mage.

So it's not that people don't have the liberty to purchase strength and magic, but if they don't have the points, they simply won't have the funds to do it, and therefore will have to change their tactic or setup, or actually try to balance their character's attributes to make them fit the mold.

Well, if I recall correctly, Saphen has a good reason in performing a tactical withdrawal. After all, he's a bard, and not exactly packing muscles - which would mean that a good hit at close range would be a bad thing for him. Fits the style his character would use.

But, what I mean by defensive play is not going on the aggressive - such as closing in on an opponent slowly while maintaining a good defensive stance to pressure the opponent. You're kiting, but you're making it difficult for the opponent to get close while you pressure them into a corner or such. Building up their stress, locking them into a bad position, closing in for the kill...something like that.

Right, his character was built around it. And the way it was I don't think it was really a good fit for the tournament.

But that might because I was raging over the fact that he launched 100 throwing knives at someone in a single post from a distance, along with a wall of ice.

And there's nothing wrong with playing defensively, see my last post.

Edit: And once again, I point out that I like Saphen's bard a lot, and he's really reworked it since last year.

Well that was random.

My opponent changed the dimensions of his weapon.

Ah, and then I mopped.

Fun stuff.

Well, unfortunately, it's because of these stereotypes and mindset that makes fighting all the more...lacking, in some way, shape or form. I've seen more and more people creating characters that are either armored like the medieval era, or characters that make the HULK look like a pansy pushover. It's almost rare to see fighters that actually kite anymore...which is a sad thing, in my opinion.

Apparently to the audience, if you're not making things explode or going aggressively at someone, you're doing something wrong.

@Sokoya--> ....Wait. 100 throwing knives with a wall of ice?
ICE?
DAMMIT SAPHEN, THAT'S MY LINE OF WORK!

Actually, the weapon is 10 inches overall, what I described was how much blade is actually going to penetrate.

10 inches...sounds a bit rude, doesn't it?

I seldom twirl the broom around, spin it in the air, around my arm, you know, all that fun stuff.

I even make a random martial art sound, every once in awhile, that is.

"HYYAWH!" More broom twirling.

Maybe I'll attack my boss one time, wait for the perfect momment, and then jump out from around the corner.

"HYYAWH!" Broom twirling, and striking.
