The obvious answer is that there is a hole in the wood surrounding the window. Check for it. That or you have a nest inside the air conditioner somewhere.

The Darth Vizzle I'm guessing it would also depend on between which two ribs the blade went between. The lower you go, the less chances for fatality, I would assume. Immediate fatality, maybe. Any deep chest/torso wound is still going to stand a good chance of carving up the wrong organ or hitting a major bloodway and at that point it's just a matter of time without medical attention to stop the internal bleeding or repair the tissue damage.
