I liked rugy ever since I realised that it was the big kid version of football. Best buffy quote ever Giles: I just think it's rather odd that a nation that prides itself on its virility should feel compelled to strap on forty pounds of protective gear just in order to play rugby.

what with the running with an oblong-shaped ball & tackling, its fairly easy to see the similarities between american football and rugby. 3nodding
tho after playin both & gainin some familiarity with each sport, i found that the differences range from the rules, technique, ball control, fluidity of the gameplay, to the actual ball itself... generally, the nature of how each game is played has a world of difference between them. i mean, even recreational tackle football & recreational rugby are two totally different animals. biggrin tackle tackle tackle & rucks with linemen tis generally taught in rugby to wrap & use the ball-carrier's own momentum against him. take him to the ground with as minimal energy from urself so that u could get up faster to help ur team gain possession of the ball. endurance is more of a concern due to the continuous gameplay.
in football, while its also taught to wrap up while tacklin, one needs to bring as much explosive power in a hit to drive the ball-carrier back. the time between plays allows players to get some rest before they haveta start up again. this kinda gameplay lets each side get all set up properly, meaning the players are brought apart momentarily & given some distance to build up speed for another inevitable hit. remember: velocity x force = power .. and with respect to international rugby players, nfl players are some of the biggest, strongest, fastest people on the planet.
now, comparing the pack & the linemen.. rucks are set up before the play, players shoulder to shoulder in a reverse tug-of-war match to get the ball to their own side. opposing linemen in football start off with a good 12" between them to gain the advantage in position & speed.. meaning more explosive impacts from the get-go. this is, of course, not to say that ruggedby doesnt have its share of awesome collisions. kickoffs are some of the most fun times of the game. kick, run, hit. the hardest hits ive seen have come from these.. also some of my worst concussions. sweatdrop tho with continuous play the rest of the game, ive found that there is more time spent moving laterally & tryin to get back into position, than gearing up for another impact.
the point im tryin to make is that each game has their pros & cons as far as how rough n tough the players are. the pads in football are there for a reason... n to let u in on a secret, many international rugby players choose to wear shoulderpads under their jerseys & padded scrumcaps on their craniums. wink
