[Nicholas :: Atlantis :: Cavern Opening]

"...Ajora, how does it feel to be a funsucking sunnuva b*tch?" Nick pouted, standing still as the Replica passed in front of him. His whole body felt heavy, as if just standing was a huge task. He righted himself up as best as he could, then carefully sheathed his sword and crossed his arms.

"Whatever you did, you can undo now. I promise not to hurt the pathetic goons blocking the way, blah blah blah, apologies." He huffed, while the gaze behind his mask shifted between the various people.

The Replica rolled his eyes, a brief look of displeasure crossing his face as Nicholas spoke. "I'd apologize, Nicholas, but you're the one who jumped ahead of me at my own party," he spoke, craning his neck to look over his shoulder at the swordsman. He nodded briefly, and the heavy weight holding Nicholas down was lifted.

Without a word, he turned his gaze back on the mercenaries, on Helga, on Daniel, looking into their eyes with his own, their unnatural golden hue adding to the strange sight of his white tuxedo.

"Well, no use wasting time, I suppose," he said, shrugging in nonchalance as his free hand suddenly switched from a golden glow to a sickly black aura. "Arrivederci."

He closed his fist tightly, and suddenly every mercenary except Helga let out an agonized yelp, their chests bowing forward--only to release their Hearts, all floating toward Ajora's hand, which he once more opened, palm up. As they reached his hand, they seemed to vanish. The mercenaries' lifeless bodies fell to the ground, much to Helga's horror, before deteriorating into nothing. When she turned back to snarl at Ajora, she found herself lifted off the ground, the Trident pointed at her and keeping her afloat.

"A fate far worse awaits you and Rourke if you do not stop him," he spoke, any trace of a smile now gone from his features as he commanded her--only for a playful smirk to cross his lips. "Have a safe flight."

In a blurred motion, clearly faster than an average human, Ajora pulled the Trident back and thrust his glowing open palm toward her, releasing a powerful force wave that sent her flying up the hilly road toward the Throne Room with enough strength to get her there--and likely break every bone in her body, had a small aura not remained around her.

"And then there was one," he said, suddenly light-hearted again as he casually walked up to Daniel with a friendly grin. "Hey there, kid, what's your name? Enjoying Zodiark, I hope?"

[Daniel :: Atlantis :: Cavern Opening]

The situation was rapidly deteriorating, and it took Daniel everything in his power to stay focused. The man before him, the man in charge had control and he was making a show of it. His swordsman grudgingly retreated fussing the whole way. The banter gave Daniel time to collect his thoughts.

Did you see the way he controlled those men?

With the weapon! Yes~

No I mean... Well YES, but that's not my point. He is establishing his dominance. Typical alpha bullshit. He didn't even like it when his swordsman stood in front to defend him. He wants those around him to feel he has no weakness.

"I'd apologize, Nicholas, but you're the one who jumped ahead of me at my own party,"

SEE?

Zodiark chuckled, I'd say show him who's boss! Take him down a notch.

"Well, no use wasting time, I suppose,"

Daniel watched the man whom his swordsman, Nicholas, called Ajora. His eyes glowed with the most peculiar shade of yellow, almost golden. He really did give off the impression of a god amongst men.

"Arrivederci."

Suddenly, with disturbing haste, the men's hearts were ripped from their chests and their lives were taken from them. Daniel didn't move. He watched them fall with an uninhibited expression of sadness and pity, letting out a long inaudible sigh. Men dieing was the last thing he wanted to see today.

Helga was next; She was lifted off the ground before she even had a chance to speak. Daniel could sense that he was about to be the last line of defense. The worry projected in his eyes for a moment before Ajora dealt his verdict.

"A fate far worse awaits you and Rourke if you do not stop him,"

With that she was gone, flung to the far side of Atlantis by force. And Daniel was alone.

If I didn't know before, I know now: He wants something from me.

Zodiark didn't respond, even with plenty of time before Ajora finished walking up to him. Instead of forcing the conversation, Daniel cleared his thoughts and rapidly assessed all of the information that had been exposed to him. Ajora was here for a goal, and he was going to show off while doing it. He had and played many cards already in just these few seconds. No man this well equipped and prepared was a fool; there was more up his sleeve. And his swordsman, Nicholas had not even been allowed to act. Not to mention the presence of 3 more creatures like Zodiark. There was too much he didn't know in a situation were he had very little chance of winning. His only hope was for Helga to alert the others, specifically Tseng. Till then he would have to buy time.

This much was certain: He was not in a position to stop them. Daniel didn't even know if he wanted to.

"Hey there, kid, what's your name? Enjoying Zodiark, I hope?"

To Ajora, Daniel would have looked like a statue, with his stance locked and his hand ready upon the baton beneath his jacket. For a few seconds after Ajora addressed him he stood like this, until suddenly his entire demeanor changed. The Turk relaxed, turned to face Ajora while pulling his arm out of his jacket, unarmed. Instead the hand went up to his fedora and popped it up so his face was visible, marked with a smirk. He looked right into Ajora's eyes.

“My name is Daniel. Zodiark says 'hi~!' to his friends."
His expression stiffened a bit, "What did you mean when you sent Helga off like a rocket?”

[ Ajora ; Artemis ; Helga : Atlantis : Underground Cavern Opening ]

Daniel. Tense, but smart enough to be diplomatic and know when overpowered. Works alongside mercenaries, but wears different uniform entirely... suit reminiscent of Earth business men... potential Turk involvement? Speaks English clearly enough, no accent, likely American. Weapon unknown, element...

Ajora sniffed lightly before laughing at what the man had said, as though her departure had been some key moment in a comedy.

... unknown. Not Darkness, as I'd remembered Zodiark, but Ultima claims no particular element.

"That was a pretty righteous launch, wasn't it?" he asked, lifting his hand up above his eyes to block out the false sunlight in order to look at the trajectory and target. "Oh, you know, just making sure he doesn't set off the Heart of Atlantis too much before I get there to claim it. I'd rather the king alive too, personally, and if memory serves Rourke ends up killing him."

With another casual shrug, he turned back to Daniel, his attitude entirely friendly. "Name's Ajora, though you heard them say it already. Host of one of the Ultimas. That there's Nicholas, host of Chaos, and the quiet girl in blue--" he jutted his thumb back toward Alice, who had (as usual) remained silent and out of sight. "Is Alice, host of Cú Chulainn. But if Zodiark's half as informative as Ultima is, I'm sure you already knew about our espers' identities anyway."

"As fascinating an Earthling as you are, though, we're on a bit of a schedule. You can come with us or not, doesn't matter to me, just be sure to stay safe," he said, beginning to walk past him. The Trident, as well as his other hand, began to glow with the sickly-black aura once again. "Especially once the others arrive to stop me. If you're lookin' to do that, which would be a damn pity really, then I'd suggest waiting for them."

[Daniel :: Atlantis :: Cavern Opening]

"That was a pretty righteous launch, wasn't it?"

Daniel followed his gaze towards the rest of Atlantis, hoping Helga had landed safely. Regardless, her arrival would send some message. He hoped that was all Tseng needed. Until then he would glean as much information as possible from Ajora.

"Oh, you know, just making sure he doesn't set off the Heart of Atlantis too much before I get there to claim it. I'd rather the king alive too, personally, and if memory serves Rourke ends up killing him."

Daniel grimaced. Not only was Ajora after the Heart, but he knew a hell of a lot more about it and the movie. Unfortunately he was still unsure whether the Heart would be of any use to the turks. Ajora had shied away from specifics so far.

The other aspect of Ajora's words, those about Rourke, concerned him. In the time that Daniel had come to know the merc captain he had learned that Rourke was greedy and driven. He would stop at nothing to obtain his goal, much like Ajora seemed to do. Helga's return would actually speed Rourke's progress up; He would not accept handing over the prize this late in the game. Daniel had to wonder if this was actually Ajora's plan or a blunder.

Ajora introduced not only the people Daniel could see standing there (including the girl in blue he had overlooked), but also the “espers” attached to each one. If Zodiark had felt the mental daggers going his way when Ajora brought him up, he made no mention of it. Daniel was not happy with his esper's games.

Are you going to tell me anything about your friends there?

Are you going to ask nicely?

Oh for the love of---!

Don't get angry at me~! I did nothing wrong this time. Your question should be: “Who are these friends of yours, my most beloved Zodiark~?” To which I would respond: “Theeese my PEEPS YO~”

Daniel mentally flipped a table, almost missing Ajora's departure speech. The dark aura around his trident snapped him back to attention.

"Especially once the others arrive to stop me. If you're lookin' to do that, which would be a damn pity really, then I'd suggest waiting for them."

He thought carefully for a moment. Ajora had once again handed him a wealth of information and he was trying to process it all. Aside from who the 'others' were, the all important question popped into his head several times before he decided to just ask.

“What will you do with the Heart?”

Daniel took a step to follow Ajora.

Ajora stopped, a quizzical look on his face. A second later, he turned to look at Daniel, his eyes appearing to size him up, as if Daniel's state of being might influence his answer.

He did sigh when I killed all the mercs.

He shrugged then, sending his free hand out to his side as if to summon something.

"I can see this is going to be an interesting stroll," he mused. At that, three identical doppelgangers appeared, though instead of a white suit they bore Ajora's standard black-and-scarlet attire. There were no words or commands--only a blur of motion as they took off ahead of the duo at an inhuman pace, often releasing random blasts of Darkness against the street and buildings as they raced. The spells left shadowy residue on the ground.

"Nicholas, Alice, you're free to go. Elleon, if you could send Artemis as well? Just keep in mind I want Kida and the king alive. If possible, also Milo and Helga, they're fun people."

The black auras left his hand and Trident as he returned to his casual pace.

"I'll make a deal with you, Daniel," Ajora said, smiling lightly as he remembered his time on the beach just the day before. "I'll answer your questions honestly and in some depth if you'll answer mine just as honestly and in-depth, hmm?"

[Daniel :: Atlantis :: Cavern Opening -> Atlantis Proper]

The dopplegangers held Daniel's attention for a long time, even after they were no longer in view. They intrigued the Turk for their potential. He silently wished he had some of his own. And then there was the issue of their appearance. Ajora purposefully made them stand out from himself, something Daniel would not have done.

He's got balls I'll give him that.

As far as I can see he's got 4 sets now.

Oh you ARE a funny one. I wonder what the dark stuff on the ground is.

I think it's dark stuff.

Daniel rolled his eyes. Zodiark was being rather unwieldy, like a child trying to look cool for his friends. He would have a talk later even though Zodiark was telling the truth.

"I'll make a deal with you, Daniel. I'll answer your questions honestly and in some depth if you'll answer mine just as honestly and in-depth, hmm?"

The Turk kept pace, though he did not speak immediately. The game was on. He'd have to respond carefully to his questions, which he was sure that Ajora would do the same. For now Daniel walked at ease, directly in between Ajora and Nicholas. The Turk adjusted his suit, and for a moment black bracelets could be seen on his wrists before his arms were at his sides.

“Sounds good to me, Ajora. Shoot.”

Zodiark tapped his conscious lightly, grabbing Daniel's attention.

I don't know what he meant by 'one of the Ultimas'. I only knew one.

Thank you, Zodiark. What of the others?

Oh you know, they were fun. Ultima thought she was some great stuff, but we all know she wasn't ME. I was the first. She really got everyone angry though!

How?

She betrayed them and left! Quite a silly thing to do to your brothers and sisters. I'm honestly surprised they aren't tearing each others throats out right now.

Zodiarks concept of what was silly or not between siblings was beyond Daniel. He made a note not to judge things he could not understand. What his esper was trying to say became clear, however.

Are you saying this is not the Ultima you knew?

Zodiark grew serious;
Now thats a good question, dear Daniel. I don't know for sure, but the others were pretty graphic about the 'love' they had for their darling sister. This sure feels like her though. Maybe you can ask~?

Daniel put it on the ever-growing list of questions he had for the man in white.

[ Ajora : Atlantis : Underground Cavern Opening -> Atlantis Proper ]

As Artemis took off after the three doppelgangers (and Ajora assumed Nicholas and Alice would follow suit shortly), Ajora awaited Daniel's answer, and was visibly pleased when it was given.

"Well, you asked first. The Heart of Atlantis, as I'm sure you know, is a source of unimaginable power, strengthened with each successive king or queen to die," he began. His pace was slow, casual. He was obviously in no rush to reach the Throne Room now, since he'd sent his other agents. "It's powerful enough to grant hundreds of people near-immortality as well as sustain this entire miniature world, granting a pseudo-sun, keeping the walls from crashing down..."

"If I could harness it, I would split the power among myself and those loyal to me--loyal and worthwhile, anyway. There are some people who could have all the power in the universe and still die from stupidity, so that'd be a waste," he said with a disappointed sigh. "However, since the only known way to access the Heart is via those crystals they wear around their necks, or with a person of royal blood, harnessing it in such a way might be impossible. If such is the case, then I'll probably attempt to destroy it. Not without granting the people an exit, of course, I'm a b*****d, not heartless."

"Now, my turn," he said, only to stop his walk, slowly turning to face the cavern entrance--someone had just arrived...

He paused, waiting.

... that someone was alone.

He shook his head in disappointment. "We'll wait here for a bit, then, it seems we're to have company soon," he explained. "Anyway, my turn--and remember, just as detailed as I was. What special weapon and abilities were you granted before Earth's destruction? It's a joint question because everyone who received a weapon received a special ability set."

[[And yes, considering you want to keep it a secret, you don't have to type out an explanation if you do answer. Just say you answered and move on, though if you could private message/IM me what he would say, that'd help me out, too.]]

[ Helga ; Rourke ; Kida ; Milo : Atlantis : Outside Throne Room ]

Rourke and his men had neared the Throne Room by this point (they had camped near the outside of the city, since they were outsiders). Milo had been uncooperative, but a powerful slam to the back of the head from the butt of a rifle stopped that issue. Kida, on the other hand, had essentially refused to stop fighting, and since she was necessary, Rourke couldn't do much besides keep her overpowered.

Before they were quite at the door, however, there was a commotion behind them as people gasped in shock--only for Helga to slam into the doors with a powerful crack, knocking the breath out of her. The force with which she'd made impact would have easily broken her rib cage, but she seemed mostly unharmed--just in pain.

"What the hell?!" Rourke shouted, standing his ground, staring at the woman as she wheezed, attempting to stand. "What's going on down there?!"

"It's... they're all dead, sir," Helga said, holding her chest with one arm as she got to her feet, her composure still shaky. "Everyone except that Turk kid. It was only a few people, but one guy took everyone's hearts without so much as a blink of an eye. Sir, he demands we stop."

"You're kidding," he seethed, looking over his shoulder and down the long, hilly path to the caverns. In the distance, no more than specks at the moment, he could see a number of blurs causing explosions--and they were nearing with dangerous speed.

"Alright, come on everyone, move!" he commanded, beginning to step forward--only for Helga to get in his way.

"Rourke, half of our men had their weapons forced out of their hands and were killed before they could do anything else," she said, her eyes growing icy as she stared him down. The mercenaries behind Rourke seemed to grow uneasy, whispering among themselves. "He specifically called you out by name and demanded you stop, or he'll do worse to both of us. Don't--"

There was an ear-shattering bang as Rourke fired his pistol into Helga's shoulder, causing her to fall to the side in shock. He turned to face the rest of the men and Tseng. "Anyone else want to stick around for those bastards to get here?"

[Daniel :: Atlantis :: Cavern Opening -> Atlantis Proper]

The story of Atlantis came back to Daniel in a flood. The succession of kings and queens. The bloodline. The source of power. The Heart of Atlantis was the living conscious of all of the past royalty, and Rourke was on his way to kill one king and send the next over the edge. Ajora's presence would make Rourke hasty. Kida might not even be saved this time. The man in white was shifting the story in his favor, making Daniel appreciate again what you could do with good intel. He cursed his own inability to remember, though Zodiark mused.

Aawwwwwww... He had to go and spoil the story.

Well I'm glad he did. I understand whats going on now. The Heart of Atlantis is a very precious resource to these people. It could potentially be used for advances in technology, but that tech would rely on the powerful conscious of Atlantis' past royalty. Unless we find a way to create our own “Heart”, I don't think this will be of use to the Turks. Not only that but it would require the sacrifice of souls to power or expand. ShinRa can't afford to buy gasoline at THAT price.

The primary Turk mission was accomplished at that point. That did not, however, mean Daniel could leave. His gambit was about to come to a head. Ajora seemed to complete his answer as “honestly and in-depth” as he deemed fit, but it was not satisfactory.

I'm not stupid. I'm aware that you could use the Heart, and that it's powerful. I asked what HE would do with it. He gave me nothing.

"Anyway, my turn--and remember, just as detailed as I was. What special weapon and abilities were you granted before Earth's destruction? It's a joint question because everyone who received a weapon received a special ability set."

Oh, he IS a sly dog~

Daniel tilted his head quizzically. Ajora repeatedly mentions others, first with an 'esper', now with weapons like his.

Yes, well, two can play that game.

Once again Daniel took a few seconds to respond. He met eyes with Ajora before he spoke.

[Private discussion]

Daniel paused, “That answer your question?”

Despite hiding much, The Turk felt he was very generous, and was all the more at Ajora's mercy. He could only hope his counterplay was gaining him ground, and that his tricks would save his life. It was becoming clear that he could not make mistakes, this Ajora fellow was no fool.

"My turn: What is your weapon and abilities?"

Daniel eyed the trident, however he could not be sure. The trident to Ajora could be the baton to him.

[ Ajora : Atlantis : Underground Cavern Opening -> Atlantis Proper ]

Ajora let out a single laugh at Daniel's explanation, but continued anyway.

"I'm a Dragoon-Class," he explained with a shrug. He playfully flourished the Trident, but continued to speak. "Got an odd type of spear and the ability to jump really far, scream really loud, and spit a lot of fire. Also have a decent control over the Darkness compared to most."

He mused thoughtfully, his mind's eyes in multiple places as the doppelgangers made their way toward the throne room and Kyla passed his hoard of Unversed.

"Hmm," he thought, rubbing his chin with his free hand. Then, with a single breath, "You Turks are working alongside Rourke, Rourke is just a mercenary leader, so I'm assuming the Turks and ShinRa are the ones funding said mercenaries, meaning they're interested in Atlantis, but ShinRa never could care less about people, which means ShinRa's after the Heart."

He tapped his chin. "Only thing he could want it for is a source of energy, and since he's got Rourke doing his dirty work and the Turks to back him up, I doubt he's going to think twice about taking it despite the cost. So, question--how strong would you say your allegiance to ShinRa and the Turks is?"

{Tseng : Atlantis : Outside Throne Room}

Tseng had remained silent as they had traveled along toward the throne room, his eyes constantly scanning their surroundings as to be ready for anything. He didn't like that they had had to use force on Milo and Kida. However, it seemed necessary for the time being.

Tseng stopped where he was outside of the door as he heard the commotion coming from behind them. His right hand reached into his jacket for his pistol just in case. He did his best not to show his shock and surprise as Helga flew right past them and slammed into the doors. He was about to check on her when Rourke spoke up, demanding an explanation, which the Turk remained silent for. The director's brows narrowed intently as he listened to what Helga had to say, he was glad to hear that they hadn't killed Daniel as well. However, what had happened to the others disturbed him greatly.

At the sound of the gunshot Tseng drew his pistol, immediately aiming it at the person who had fired which was Rourke. He ignored the mercenary leader's question and stepped forward, his gun still aimed at Rourke.

"Mr. Rourke, I am relieving you of duty," Tseng began, his voice relatively calm yet at the same time cold as ice. "As Director of the Turks, and official representative of ShinRa Inc. I am officially taking command of this operation. The situation has become too dangerous, I am aborting this mission. I am ordering you right now to release the prisoners, we are withdrawing immediately."

His eyes didn't leave Rourke the entire time he spoke, and his pistol remained on the leader of the mercenaries. He didn't want to, but the Turk was prepared to use force if he absolutely had to.

"Stand down right now, or I will shoot," he stated his voice unchanging.

[Daniel :: Atlantis :: Cavern Opening -> Atlantis Proper]

If he was bothered by Ajora's nonchalant vagueness, Daniel didn't show it. The Turk pictured the characters from “Legend of Dragoon”, an old Square Enix classic. He remembered many of the characters, but he didnt see any particularly important clues as to what Ajora could do.

Zodiark, you have any idea what he is talking about there?

Not a clue. He's very good at this, he seems to be having almost as much fun as me~

Ajora dragged out his question, providing a lot of unnecessary assumptions to his case. The actual question gave Daniel pause.

“Aside from them finding me, accepting me, training me.. I just like them. The Turks are good people. ShinRa is a little rough around the edges, but you have him pegged a little... heartless. I may have only been here a week but I've never seen him tear the hearts out of an entire platoon of mercenaries.”

He hoped the joke would not start a fight with Ajora, so he continued.

“I feel like I am accomplishing something worthwhile here with the ShinRa. Something lasting. I consider myself a Turk, Ajora.”

Daniel wasted no time in firing off a question for his turn.

“Will you stop the king and Kida from becoming part of the heart?”

[Kyla: Spire Tunnel> On route to Atlantis]

‘Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!’

Kyla didn’t share all of the Carbuncles enthusiasm. She was too busy trying not to get intimidated from the drop which no doubt was taking miles and miles of distance! How did Sora EVER get used to this kind of stuff?! Even the jump from the airship into the water made her a little freaked out, here- even with her summons floatation attributes slowing her decent, it was still a daunting thing to do.

’ Enjoying yourself?’

It’s like Alice in wonderland!

‘ I wonder if we’re going there eventually too, I guess this is practice- hope there aren’t unversed in the rabbit hole too.

Those said unversed where giving her trouble too. Ones that resembled ravens would try to dive bomb her as she passed them. Her bladed defense was good enough to keep them at bay, but when a larger group tried to intercept she had to use metaslash when they got too close. The ones which looked like bats were a little trickier then the ravens. They appeared to be capable of magic, since they used sharp Area bursts. Clusters of them would swoop down beneath and try to aim upwards as she fell. Kyla had to shoot at them quickly or at least try to veer out of the way while still avoiding collisions with the walls.

While she never had to completely halt her decent she had to slow down once or twice to blast any swarms that proved to be too dangerous to simply fall passed. The spire seemed to go on forever! She couldn’t be too far down either, maybe not even half way! How fast did one go at terminal velocity? Could she try a sheer plummet for a short amount of time or just go at this pace? For now she didn’t change the decent unless it proved to be taking far too long.

As she blasted another group of unversed out of her way her thoughts went back to Kyle and the others. Would they be catching up to her soon? Strangely she didn’t bother to contact them about it, maybe it would be too distracting. But someone should at least know right?

<< Jenny- I’m on my way down through the spire. If anyone asks that’s where I’m going. I’m not sure if I’m halfway down yet- this decent is taking a while. Understandably so. >>

Kyla sent this message privately to the musician; she seemed to be the one most capable of receiving telepathic communication without it interfering with her part in this battle.

"If I can find some way of harnessing its energies without them, yes," he answered without bothering to take a moment to think about it. He didn't need to. "However, magic is very stubborn, especially ancient magic. One doesn't simply change the way an artifact works. You're more likely to accidentally destroy it or yourself."

He smiled, already ready with his next question. Daniel's answer had given him just what he'd been hoping for.

"The way you feel about being a Turk--that you're accomplishing something worthwhile," he began, playing at the question a bit. "Would you say whatever it is you're accomplishing is more worthwhile than bringing Earth and all its billions of people back from the Darkness?"
