"I'm sure we'll be able to eat after we're done."

Normally Miyuki would have rolled her eyes (and she could get away with it now since they were both blindfolded) but it was probably noon which meant it was lunch, so it was understandable for her this time as to the fact that her friend was hungry.

"Yeah ..."

He concentrated hard on finding his way through the maze of hedges, and after a while he couldn't refrain from shouting out: "Alassëa! Are you here?"

"Very near," came the amused reply.

Amalirahc honed in on her voice. "Don't you move again!" he told her.

Miyuki couldn't help but giggle at that as they navigated through the maze hedge.

"We went all the way to your room," Miyuki called out to Alassea.

Though it was really just to hear her voice again.

"Good," Alassëa quipped, laughing. "And did you find it easier to find your way outside than in?"

"Nope," Amalirahc replied succinctly. "Luk helped us find our way to your room, but then he left us and we had to find our way back outside again all by ourselves!"

Alassëa giggled. "At least tell me it's easier now to get around without hitting anything than it was at the beginning."

"But," Miyuki pipped up, "We got out by ourselves by remembering where we came in, something we wouldn't have been able to do on our own to start with."

She did have to wonder if Alassea did have a really good memory, since she needed it to get around.

"But... we didn't run into anything."

Especially didn't run into hedges which was nice but they used their staffs a lot for that.

"Good for you," Alassëa said proudly. Amalirahc was pleased to discover that her voice was growing closer as they went forward. "Then it seems this lesson has indeed been effective. I'm glad."

She seemed very close now, and Amalirahc was eager to finish the exercise. He picked up the pace ever so slightly to get to her more quickly.

"Ah..." Miyuki felt only the slightest tug on her hand as Amalirahc picked up the pace, "Careful!"

She didn't want Amalirahc to run into anything at the last minute, she knew how prickly the bushes were and knew how much he disliked it.

"Sorry," Amalirahc apologized, slowing down again.

"So Amalirahc, how much do you think you've learned about sensing what's around you?" Alassëa asked, and it seemed as if she had something on her mind, by the tone of her voice.

Amalirahc missed it completely. "I think I leaned a lot," he beamed. "I can feel it when there's a wall in front of me or beside me even without a staff or without my hands!"

There was a brief pause. "You're sure about that?"

"Yup!"

There was a soft, almost inaudible whoosh followed by the crack of a staff meeting a skull, which was followed immediately by a yowl of pain.

"HEY!"

It was the change in air pressure (though it was just as mild as the sound) that tipped Miyuki off first before hearing it. She had let go of Amalirahc's hand before it cracked his skull. Her ears plastered themselves against her skull, she felt sorry for Amalirahc.

"It's... not easy," Miyuki murmured, "Especially to tell when you're at an intersection and the maze is harder because there's no ceiling so you can hear sound over head, unlike in a building where it's a bit more obvious."

But not obvious enough really.

"Though, when we were talking about Luk, he was talking about sensing people... like... their being? Auras? He didn't seem to like to use the word auras, but he mentioned that as a way to know where people are and when they come and go, but I don't know anything about that."

Alassëa smiled to herself, both at Amalirahc's reaction (when would he learn?) and at Miyuki's implied question.

"If you continue with what I am teaching you about knowing your surroundings when you can see nothing, you will also learn about sensing people," she told Miyuki. "It is also possible to focus on that, if you wish, but to me it is no different than sensing what is around you. If anything, it's easier to sense people because they're alive."

Miyuki paused and thought about it, "Well... I'd like to, because well... even when I can see all elves can still come in without me knowing, I don't really like that all that much because it's easy to sneak up on me."

She wasn't really a twitchy person by nature, but she knew how annoying it got when someone came up behind her and she didn't know.

Alassëa nodded slowly to herself.

"Keep your eyes closed, it's going to be bright," she cautioned the children as she reached to remove their blindfolds.

Amalirahc made sure to keep his eyes closed for several seconds after his blindfold was off, and then opened his eyes very slowly so that the light would not be such a shock.

"We'll leave it at this for today," Alassëa went on. "Perhaps tomorrow we can have another lesson."

She took off Miyuki's blindfold as well, then tucked the two blindfolds into the small bag she always had with her.

Miyuki did the same, and opened her eyes slightly but even then kept them hooded (half closed) for a bit longer. Seeing as they were outside in the middle of the day it was very bright.

"That was very bright," she murmured.

Alassëa smiled at Miyuki. "Well, I'll have to take your word for it," she quipped. "Though I did warn you. But come, it will be lunch time. Think you can find your way back up to the rooms to wash up for lunch?"

Amalirahc thought about it seriously. "Maybe?" he ventured hesitantly. "I ... think so ..."

After all, they had found their way out blindfolded, it couldn't be that much more difficult to go in without a blindfold, could it?

Miyuki was even less sure because they knew their way to the guest wing because of how long it took and where the intersections were but not by sight. It was all by feel.

"Not sure," she admitted, "But we'll try, we can't get anymore lost than usual."
