themightyjello Well, they're not really ninjas at all. Yes they are. We've been through this. It's called fiction. They are so if the creator called them so. Just like Yellow is used to represent paler complexioned peoples on the Simpsons. They are Kishimoto's representation of ninja. Therefore they are ninja.

Just like Yellow is used to represent paler complexioned peoples on the Simpsons. They are Kishimoto's representation of ninja. Therefore they are ninja. That's just arguing semantics. Saying "They're not really ninjas" MEANS "They have no resemblance to what we know of the ninjas that actually existed in history". Saying that, in a literal sense, he is wrong, doesn't make his point any less valid because no part of his argument was based around the literal interpretation of that statement.

"A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet" is a phrase about semantics.
No matter what you call it, a rose is still a rose.
No matter if he calls them ninja or not, they are not really what ninja are. Therefore, they are simply battle mages by another name... and they still smell like teenage angst and explosions.
Yes. He's allowed to use that word in reference to them because they are his representation of it. However, ninja are not a fictional thing like vampires, elves, elemental magics, and whatnot. There is a certain way that ninja were, historically, and that is not it, nor does it really come that close.
The argument "yeah, but what IF ninja had crazy magic powers" may come up following this, but the answer is "then they would be battle mages".

No. They aren't like vampires.
I believe there is such a thing as taking one thing.. putting a spin on it.. but it still being that thing.
Like a Samurai that may walk around in a business suit as opposed to kendo wear or armor.
Ryu does karate. Of course we know in real life no one shoots fireballs but that's what he does.
Kim Kaphwan does TaeKwonDo ... of course we know you cant set someone on fire with a kick unless a number of conditions are met.. that's what he does. As well as most of TKD's moves being completely ineffective in actual full contact combat.
And this can go on for days.
Naruto is a spin.. a different take.. on Ninjas.
But they are still Ninjas.

Hanzo Hattori, Eiji Kisaragi, Yuffie Kisaragi, Zantetsu, Andy Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Ryu Hayabusa, Hayate, Kasumi, Ayane, and Hokutomaru are all famous videogame ninjas. They have powers.. some of them are flashy... But they are still Ninjas. The characters in that one anime movie about Ninjas and stuff starring Jubei. They were ninjas. All of them had powers/unrealistic skill.. but they were still ninjas.

Mr. Crawley I believe there is such a thing as taking one thing.. putting a spin on it.. but it still being that thing. The prerequisite, of course, is that it still has to be that thing when all is said and done.

themightyjello Mr. Crawley I believe there is such a thing as taking one thing.. putting a spin on it.. but it still being that thing. The prerequisite, of course, is that it still has to be that thing when all is said and done. It becomes a representation of the thing. And therefore is still the thing. Take the characters in Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series. A lot of the characters are very far from who they are based upon in history. But they have the same name. They are all spins on the person.. but still the person.. by name. Therefore they are the person. Miyamoto Musashi is displayed/represented in various different ways when a project is done about him or involving his name. A lot of them look NOTHING like the person.. But.. they are.. Miyamoto Musashi.

Are you sure they're just not... people named Musashi who wish to capitalize on the popularity of the name?
I don't think I've seen that many named Miyamoto Musashi... just Musashi. Why? Because it's a media popularized name, but nobody really knows much about the person because they never care enough to look past the label.
"I could s**t in a box, slap a guarantee on it, and all you'd have is a guaranteed piece of s**t."
In the same vein. I could make up some nappy skateboarder kid from downtown L.A. who solves crimes in between times he's somehow caught up in international terrorism for some reason, name him Khublai Khan, and all I'd have is some nappy skateboarder kid named after a Mongolian warlord.

I guess this is a fight between Naruto "ninjas" are ninjas, or aren't.
In the end, instead of writing a large paragraph, they are ninjas in the fiction world, but would be declined in the real world if they tried to sign up somehow.

Lawl, man. I've got like 5 reserved spots within a page and a half of that review thread. No need to reserve, I mean, it's not like you won't be allowed to write something if someone beats you to it.
Then I look at the other one (I'm updating the index with posts in both, the other one is in one of my guilds) and it's like 90% me just posting whenever I finish something. xp
