Naruto is good. But no reason to cause a shitstorm. I accept it isn't popular to everyone. I just don't like how because it's mainstream that it gives others a reason to hate it. It's similar to the mainstream of how anime came into existence, and now people, the fans, are hating it because of the fact that the anime industry is catering to the "new generation."

People hate it for reasons.

However, if you replace the term 'ninja' with 'battle mage', it becomes a lot more tolerable.

Battle Mage sounds too extraneous, though. And it's also too....old school? But a name change to change the minds of the minority would hardly be a good business choice.

Well, they're not really ninjas at all.

They CALL themselves ninjas... but I've yet to see any of them actually be sneaky. They wear bright colors and shout a lot. 99% of their moves are accompanied by an explosion of some sort. They can fly, use telekinesis, and have various elemental spells (I don't care, shut up, they're spells and you know it).

And the 'hidden ninja village' is directly under Mount Rushmore and has a tower with a bright red roof sticking up far above the forest.

They are not ninjas. They don't dress like ninjas. They don't act like ninjas. All they have going for them is the fact that they're Japanese and they use -some- appropriate weapons. Some.

It insults me personally whenever anyone cites it as a reference to ninja anything.

My friend actually gave a very good argument against that rant, when we had a good talk.

All those things are to appeal to the manga/anime fans. It's also a media tactic. What's more appealing: someone wearing black and dark blue all the time, or someone in colors and clothing and anything else that allows you to distinguish each person? It's manga, so it doesn't have to make sense. Naruto is teaching the morals and life of ninjas in a different way, from Kishimoto's (the author of Naruto) point of view. I'm pretty sure no one has yet to question them sending kids to their deaths. Reason because Naruto is suppose to make things look all "nice" and "comdedic" while showing an underlining meaning of the true life of a ninja (and even communism).

However, they have used stealth in various way if you read the manga or watch the anime through, and you will see many ways of stealth being performed, from disguises to the common trickery with bushins. Naruto isn't about accuracy because ninja was never potrayed accurately in history. Ninja is just based on myths because you should know that that's the only source of information you'll ever get on ninja.

In the end, Naruto is just an image of all the myths and stories about ninjas bunched into one fun story that anyone can enjoy.

Maybe I should throw NPCs at another thread.

Nobody's biting on the few I have. Then again, I'm waiting for post responses in like 3 anyway.

I fully agree with you up until here. It's not about accuracy, it's about entertainment value and what appeals to large numbers of a young audience.

However, being something that markets well isn't necessarily the same as something that earns my respect.

Yusuke
Naruto is teaching the morals and life of ninjas in a different way, from Kishimoto's (the author of Naruto) point of view. I'm pretty sure no one has yet to question them sending kids to their deaths. Reason because Naruto is suppose to make things look all "nice" and "comdedic" while showing an underlining meaning of the true life of a ninja (and even communism).

I'm not seeing it. Even in the anime, which is so much more filler-tastic than the manga, I'm not really seeing anything that's about 'life as a ninja'. What it ends up preaching is the standard adolescent youth television dogma of "cheer up, because your family loves you and if you try hard you can do it!!!".

I've not seen anything about the true life as a ninja in any of it. I've just seen the everyday troubles of modern youth parodied in a colorful battle-mage environment.

I'm not seeing the: "You were sent out on a mission with your team, and your long-time friend was gutted like a fish because his foot slipped while scaling a castle wall in the middle of the night. Instead of trying to save him, you simply kept going because deep down you and he both knew that he was already dead. Now he's gone, but the mission succeeded. Deal with it without being an emo f**."

Yusuke
However, they have used stealth in various way if you read the manga or watch the anime through, and you will see many ways of stealth being performed, from disguises to the common trickery with bushins.

I've seen a minority of characters use stealth sometimes. Though it's usually hiding in a bush or something and then instantly being found out despite doing nothing that could have given themselves away. Because the other guys just have some sort of 'ninja sense'. There have also been times when people turned themselves into someone else through crazy ninja magic, but again, that's a severe minority. Usually only one or two people per arc, always a bad guy.

Unless it's some insane mid-battle clone/disguise magic trick.

Yusuke
Ninja is just based on myths because you should know that that's the only source of information you'll ever get on ninja.

I'm sorry... I don't mean to rag on you or anything, but "nobody really knows so we can make up what we want to believe" is the internet mantra of people who don't want to do research.

There's a lot more information out there than "myths and stories", even if you're just doing internet searches for credible information. Even watching a History Channel documentary. Heck, I've got a book on my shelf titled "Ninja Mind Control" that very loudly states that ninja do not have magic powers.

Hell... ask Fenix about kunai. I'm sure he'd be happy to oblige you.

That all said:

I can understand why it's popular with young kids. It's happy and cheerful and adventurous and sometimes funny.

I can understand why with older kids. It's got a wide range of characters that people can try to identify with, and nine times out of ten you can point at someone and say "this guy is a badass because ______, ______, _____, and a ______ explosion when he ______".

I don't condemn it for being a television show. I don't condemn it at all.

I condemn the fans that actually believe ninja are anything like what they see in there.

*shuts his mouth hard about kunai* >< *keeps it closed very tight*

Don't worry about it, though. I just like to defend the series to say that it's at least good to read if you don't take it too seriously. I want to at least give a reason why I watch it without being called a Narutard, or those other terms thrown around.

I don't like western comics for various reasons, but I understand others like it for their own. So, as long as we're at that understanding, I'm cool with it.

I've sat through roughly 260 episodes of the stuff.

Why? I honestly can't tell you. As long as I mentally swap 'battle mage' in every time they say 'ninja' it's not so bad. I'm glad that other than Naruto and Kakashi no other characters really abuse the clone/replacement strategy that made me fall out of my chair and curl into a fetal ball of pain during the Zabuza saga.

I like some of the characters. Unfortunately they're the B-list characters that only really got worthwhile chunks of time during the Chuunin Exam arc and the "OshitSasuke'sabadguy" arc.

To be perfectly honest... if you asked me, I'd say I keep watching it for Neji.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 17, 2007 6:25 pm

I watch and read it for characters other than the main ones, myself. Shikamaru, Rock Lee, Temari, Tsunade, the supporting cast actually are more popular since they're considered more down to earth. Sometimes, cliches and Mary Sues can become too much.

You're the second person (out of two) who's said Temari. She must be better in the manga because in the anime she's just... there. Nothing that makes her stand out as a person other than that she's kinda rude.

Shikamaru gave me new hope for the show. Lee, at one point, showed me that the animators can actually do martial arts without it being DBZ flash-step movement. Tsunade I just plain hate.

Neji is just superior and everyone knows it. That's sort of his character. He's just like the 'smart and handsome' guy in shoujo anime, or the 'rich aristocrat' character in mecha anime, or whatever other examples you want to come up with. I like him for the "cursed with success" atmosphere of the character rather than the Mary Sue aspect. Though clearly he's almost as Sue as Naruto and Sasuke.

Gaara was just emo.
