Dari took the donuts and was now officially unable to stop anything from happening. Toby took Cody hand and shook it firmly, testing Cody's grip like any good father figure would.
"Yeah, we do! We actually just finished. Thanks for the donuts, though! That's sweet of you."
Dari winced. What was going to happen?

Ah! Toby was the protective older brother he'd expected. And seemed to be acting as the father in this situation, even though they couldn't be that far apart in age. He smiled and nodded in understanding; they'd probably started early, then.
Maia looked to Dari. She took his hand and gave him a smile. Toby was just making sure Cody was a good guy! He'd done the same to Luca, hadn't he? "Come on, I'll make tea," she invited.

Dari smiled to Maia. Yes! He could see understanding in her eye--TEA?! No! No tea!
Toby was immediately not intimidated. If it came down to it, Dari could take this guy down. That didn't mean Cody was necessarily a good guy, though. He seemed polite at least.
"Yeah! Come on in, sit down, make yourself comfortable," Toby said, stepping back, "Dari tells me you're a high school teacher?"

Well. He hadn't been expecting to be invited inside. "Alright," he agreed. This reminded him of that time he'd taken that girl out to a movie when he'd been sixteen. Oh boy.
"Yeah, I teach western civilization," He said, sitting down and looking to Dari. Was this okay? Was there an escape route? "Its an elective, though, since they focus more on world history and US history at the school."

"Oh! Is it popular?" Toby asked. If so, Cody was a good teacher. If not, nope. He put the donuts down on the table and looked them over himself. Hmm. Chocolate? Good choice. He hadn't told Cody they liked chocolate, had he? Dari looked to Cody and smiled. Nope, it was okay. They'd get out as soon as possible.
"How did you two meet?" Coffee in the park. He remembered. He was just testing.

"Fairly," Cody said, "The kids really seem to enjoy it. I take them down to the museum, or if the movie festival's on, we go see one of the movies if they relate to a subject we've focused on. I get a lot of seniors, but the freshmen are always great with their questions."
He paused, blinking at the next question. "In the park," he said. "Bit awkward, actually, but I'm glad I had the chance to meet him." He gave Dari a smile.
Maia came out then, with four mugs on a tray. She must have already had it brewing.

"That's good!" Toby said with a nod, "How long have you been at it?" he took a mug from Maia and smiled, then thanked her softly. Dari took his, but didn't drink.
Dari smiled to Cody. He was glad he'd met him too! Wait a second, Maia had already had this brewing? After breakfast?
"So where are you planning on going today?" Toby asked then, "Are you a big outdoorsman?"

"This is my third year," Cody said, taking a mug, as he was clearly expected to, and sipping at the tea. "Thank you," he added, looking to Maia. "I graduated college, and came here for student teaching, I love it."
He set his mug down. "We're hiking up Tiffany Mountain," he said. "Yeah. My parents and I used to go camping all the time up there, I thought Darren might like it. He says he's never gone."

Toby smiled and nodded. "Oh, that'll be nice." It was still weird to hear Dari called by his human name. Nobody really did it but outsiders. This guy seemed fine, though. He had a legitimate job, he was polite, he wasn't hiding under the side table; all good things. Dari smiled to Cody. They needed to get out of here!
"So you've been around here a few years? Where did you come from?"

Cody was starting to feel awkward, looking between Dari and Toby and hesitating for a moment. "Down south," He said, at last. "I've lived in Arizona my entire life--the desert part, he added. "My parents are only a few towns over now, though."

Down south?! Oh. Just Arizona. Toby nodded and smiled.
"Well, we won't want to keep you. I just wanted to meet you. It's not often Dari comes home so giddy," he teased. "Thank you for the donuts. Do you want us to save a few for you?"
Dari stood. "I don't need any. Cody?"

They could leave? Cody smiled. Good! He had thought the guy would go on forever. "Oh, no, they're for you. I packed us a picnic for later," he added, looking to Dari. He stood and offered Dari his hand.
"It was nice meeting you, Toby, Maia," he said. He was ready to retreat.

"Well thank you!" Toby said. That was certainly sweet... almost a bribe, but sweet.
Dari stood and pulled on his jacket, then smiled and waved as he led Cody out the door. Freedom! "I warned you," he said with a laugh.
Toby peered out the window and watched them go. "I think we scared him."

"You were right," Cody agreed, shaking his head. "I'll listen to you next time. Do you have any friends that'll interrogate me?" he grinned and opened his car door for Dari.
"Good," Maia said, going to Toby's side and peering out the window. "I like him," she added. "Very polite."

"Maybe," Dari said, ducking into the car, "Only one. His boyfriend would keep him in check. They were told to babysit me at the club when that one guy desperately wanted in my pants." Which, by the way, Cody wasn't getting either. Hopefully that was okay. Cody didn't really seem that type. He seemed to be really honestly interested.
"He didn't try to take me off to the other room to talk, so I think you passed."
