"Apparently...or maybe just an old one." He said, narrowing his eyes as he looked at the sparkling horse, turning the volcanic rock around and around in his hand, feeling the smooth texture under his fingers.
Sleipnir, the bringer of the valient dead to Valhalla, and Odin's warhorse. Thunder and lightening sounded when he ran, over land sea and air, from the land of the living to the land of the dead. The eight legged steed could cross all eight points of the compass, from eight directions into eight dimensions.
John wondered if he could summon him using the runes....but perhaps he would leave such lofty thoughts for another time sweatdrop
"Okay, i have my totem...now what?" He asked her, continuing to turn the little horse around in his fingers.

"Now you need to think of your totem as a doorway, and use your mind to reach through that doorway for all the power in the room around you!" With a smile she tapped her lips and pulled the little amethist cricket out of the box.

Samantha~Munin~ " Now you need to think of your totem as a doorway, and use your mind to reach through that doorway for all the power in the room around you!" With a smile she tapped her lips and pulled the little amethist cricket out of the box. He sighed a little, looking down at the horse in his hand. Holding it in his palm, he lifted it, focusing on it, narrowing his eyes as he tried to mentally picture the thing as not a door, but a drain, like in a sink, which he could pull the plug out of and sink his hand into to grasp a leyline... Slowly, some of the flaoting, glowing smoke-trails began to shift their ways towards him, little lines peeling off them towards the sparkling horse in his hand. The lines flowed into the horse much like water going down a drain, and as it did he lifted his left hand, the metallic finger extending... To draw a symbol into the air, the symbol for glow then illuminate, the symbols appearing like crackling static which hung in the air, snapping and writhing like coiled snakes. He drew the two runes slowly, before drawing them together with his hand - and watched as the runes shrank down into a tiny ball of light, the ball glowing before breifly pulsing brightly, like a lighthouse light when it turns directly towards you.

Sam clapped her hands and grinned like the youngster she appeared to be. "By Jove I think you've got it! Now remember that I wasn't holding anything when I drew my own spells.. so the next part of the trick is to remember the feeling of the power all around you coalescing into something that you can use, and then channeling it into the spell! The stone is just a focus, something for your mind, it isn't really necessary for the magic... at least not for you!" She hopped up to tap him lightly on the temple with two fingers, shifting his sight back to the ordinary spectrum so that he would only see the results of his work and not get too dependant on using his outer eyes for what his inner eye should be able to show him!

John looked dissapointed when she took away his 'spirit eye', pouting a little as he looked to the figurine of Sleipnir in his hand. He closed his eyes and placed the horse down on his leg, putting his elbows down on his knees and clasping his hands together, trying to focus without focusing, trying to figure out the instinct that came with the horse... ...He sat there for a long whilst, maybe even a good half an hour, before finally moving. Unclasping his hands and opening his eyes, he put out a finger and began to draw several runes in the air...but as he finished the first and started on the second, the first would fade, the white/blue static simply fading away. He growled to himself and tried again, but this time he could only manage to finish the first before it faded, his irritation making him lose focus. "...I need to practise." He muttered, grabbing up the horse and looking at it. "What other runes can i cast?"

Sam likely would have asked if he knew where Max got his 'spirit eye' from.. if he knew that Hono had been the one to show him how to do that trick in the first place, but she figured he would get it on his own if he needed it bad enough xp She was a big believer in people learning for themselves!
She got up and rummaged through some drawers in her dresser, looking under meticulously folded and organised shirts until she found a little paper packet that rattled softly. She drew two linked runes on the paper with a black marker so they were thick and very obvious in their design. "Practice on these... toss one in a bit of water and then use this spell on it!"
The one rune was obviously the same one that he had used to make the mini sun, but the other was something new.. not even Norse, it was a variation of the Ankh, the symbol of life. She tapped the simple stave with a grin. "Grow... but keep in mind that your subject matter will be a seed, and what is growing is a plant... something that needs sunlight, but not so much as to burn it to a crisp!" wink
Hopefully, he would find that this spell required quite a bit of power but also a lot of concentration.. and the plants she had given him would not easily go out of control and destroy her mother's house xp

John accepted the little packet with a nod, his face serious as he stood, towering over the little girl, the chair groaning a little as it was releived of the deplorable wighte "Aye girl, i'll start training tomorrow."
He wondered what type of seeds they were....the packet was plain, the runes the only things written on it.
"Well, uh, i guess i'd better go check on Hono'o....she's probably wondering what took me so long..." He said quietly, shifting in his feet a little. He didn't know what to do - did he thank her? He wanted to give her a hug, but he knew that was him reacting to the little girl standing before him and not the timeless raven she contained...he wasn't sure how well that would go down. And a handshake would seem forced.
"Thank you for everything...i really appreciate it."

Sam nodded, putting away her box of stones. "There is a letter from Aunt Nedy on the table, please give it to Mom for me.. it took a while finding it's way to the Nest in the first place, I guess she forgot to tell her sister about this place... not that I find that surprising at all."
As simple as that Munin seemed to dismiss the big man, she really was a strange mix of ancient and girl-child... one moment obviously living in the moment and the next the true incarnation of Memory. "Remind her that she should call and have real groceries delivered as well, if she intends to stay more than one night.. none of us can survive very long on french fries and pizza." xp

John looked down at his feet, for some reason feeling very cowed and nervous. "Uh...right." He said with a nod, pausing for a moment...before turning on his heel and walking out of the room, walking down the steps to the main living area and walking into the kitchen.
Nedy...he had caught up with her a while back, before he'd hooked up with Hono'o...finding her letter in the small pile on the kitchen counter, John looked it over for a moment. He was suddenly struck by a sense of normalicy, the feeling giving him a headspin, enough so that he almost fell over, his feet thumping on the floor to stop himself from falling over. His life had taken a direct 180 in only the last few days - surrounded by death and gore and his own s**t in some dank cave, now he was rifling through bills and letters in a pristine kitchen with a beautiful woman waiting for him downstairs.
He placed his hand on his forehead and closed his eyes, letting out a slow sigh...before grabbing the letter and making his way down to where he'd left Raven.

Hono was right where he had left her, only now there was some strange cartoon on the huge a** TV, the volume turned way down and subtitles flickering across the bottom of the screen to retell what the characters where saying.
She was half asleep, stretched out across the couch, her feet and knees hanging over the arm rest as she absently mad fun of the mistakes in the translation... the jokes made so much more sense when you heard them, instead of reading them xp

"Hey, i've returned, more or less intact..." He said with a grin, rubbing the base of her foot with his right thumb, massaging it gently as he held out the letter Sam had told him to deliver. "This is for you. It's from Nedy."He then resumed his rubbing of her foot. Although he couldn't feel anything through his steel hand, exercises like these helped minimise any damage he'd do to items...the feeling in his steel fingers were empty, like he was pushing his fingers into plastic clay, but if he could feel the pressure then he could adjust for damage.

"That tickles!" xp With a little squeak she wiggled her foot around.. not really pulling it away, just playing at trying to escape as she took the envelope from him and ripped it open to pull out the paper.
Before she stilled as the second line attempted to destroy her entire world...

Nedyfay Norrell Dearest sister, Writing is easier than a phone call; I hope you can forgive me for sending a letter instead of telling you directly. I don't know how to say this, but...Winter passed away two weeks ago. Bloodclot formed in the leg, travelled to the brain...you know as well as I do that although this is rare, it's not unknown to happen to women in labour. Her daughter is fine; healthy, well-developed, the works. Her name is Emery Raven – Winter named her after you. Her full name is Emery Raven Frost-Norrell; a name longer than she is, really... Either way, I...I don't know. It seems like the universe has saved every single major event for a couple of years, just to drop everything on me now. Cerebus is back, literally from the dead, and he is just as adept at scrambling my brain as he always was. Tomorrow is back, too, but you know that. We ran into each other quite by chance in Durem; he didn't remember me at first, but he got there. I can't believe it has been two weeks. It feels like two days in one way, and two months in another. There isn't a funeral to be held...true to form, Winter had long since decided that she wanted her body donated to science when she passed away. There might be a cremation eventually...but who knows how long those scientists will... I don't even want to think about how strangers are using my daughter's body as a specimen. I considered a memorial service, but decided not to. Those who mattered to her will remember her just fine without one. And I am not ready to admit she's gone. She was – is – my miracle. My lovely, exasperating, restless, carefree, big-hearted miracle; can you blame me for not wanting to let her go for good? Come see me and Emery one day. She's a sweet girl, doesn't make a lot of fuss. ~ Nedy.

With a shaking hand Rae took the photo off the letter, gazing at the tiny baby unblinking as she slowly refolded the letter and held it out towards John.
Winter was gone... a funny part of her brain tried to joke that now the spring was here, but even in her own mind it sounded empty.. hollow.
Winter was gone, as mortal as the next girl apparently... nothing Rae could have done to save her niece, healing only fixed injuries, it couldn't return life to the dead. "Well..."
Rave was used to death, she had seen a very large amount of it in her long lifetime... hell, her best friend was a grim reaper even, the agent of Death! She had lost those she loved as family before... but it never failed to startle her when Death came knocking for someone she loved.

HonoRaven " That tickles!" xp With a little squeak she wiggled her foot around.. not really pulling it away, just playing at trying to escape as she took the envelope from him and ripped it open to pull out the paper. Before she stilled as the second line attempted to destroy her entire world... "Hey, sit still, it'll be better in a minute...at least, it will once i remember how to do it properly..." He mumbled, focusing on her feet. He tried not to think of the runes at the moment - if he threw himself into them, he'd overload on information, and today had been a long day...a good nights sleep, and he would begin to train with this 'magic'... He realised Hono'o wasn't moving around anymore, and looked up to her. "...You okay honey?" He asked as she held the letter out for him. "What...?" Was all he got before he began to read it. He took his time, reading it over and over. Nedy had told him of Winter passing, and it had been obvious to her that she had been upset...they had talked long into the night about life and their places in it, and, typically, John had hoped he'd helped her....but, honestly, he knew, deep down, there was nothing he could have done for her. This wasn't a monster that could be slain with fists and fighting... He pushed himself to his feet and moved to the couch, sitting down beside the woman. She was obviously distraught by the news, and he opened his arms wide, offering her a hug. "C'mere..." He whispered softly.
