"Mmhm," Dari said softly.
One again Dari's fingers reacted as if the touch had been intentional, reaching up for the hand and brushing knuckles to palm before settling back in. He savored the popcorn, the contact with the man beside him, the movie, the atmosphere, the lights, god, just everything. To live and feel was wonderful.

The movie had felt damn good. Dari had come out grinning and driven Cody back to the cafe still on that high. He decided to walk Cody to his car rather than just leave him to it and got out with him.

Cody was reluctant to leave. The day had been so special, he didn't want it to end. "So... Next weekend?" he asked, hopefully. He moved forward and placed a kiss on Dari's cheek. "I'll call you tomorrow," he promised. Mountains next time. He was looking forward to showing Dari that place.

Dar was about to answer when Cody kissed his cheek. A grin began to split his lips, tending over toward one side, and then he returned the gesture, kissing Cody on the opposite cheek.
"Sure. I get out around five. What time next weekend?"

"Around eleven? Have some things packed. Snacks, water. And er, bring something warm." While it was spring, the higher elevations were bound to be chilly." He was beaming though, and added, "Alright, I'll call you around five. Do you get off at the same time every day?"

"In the morning? Sure," Dari said with a nod, "Are we going on a hike?" Was this the special pace Cody had been excited to bring him? And on the second date?!
"Oh, yeah. Just about. Sometimes I do overnights. I can have my phone with me but it's best not to use it for personal conversations during the day. Just in case."

"Yeah, it's a bit of a walk," Cody admitted, and then studied Dari for a moment. "Its worth it, though." He'd love it. Dari had said he enjoyed the little things, and that he'd never been to the mountains. "Just let me know when you're working over night," he said. "You can always text me."

"No, that's good. I haven't been out hiking in a long time." Never not on a mission or some off-hours romp with Toby. "I will." A pause. A smile.
"I had a nice time today. Talk to you tomorrow?" Dari leaned in to kiss Cody on the cheek again and touched his hand before beginning to back up toward his own car.

Cody smiled brightly. So Dari had had a good time, that was the important thing--hopefully their second date would go even better. "Talk to you then," he affirmef, turning to his own car.

Dari gave a fake salute and finally turned, walking off to his car to head toward home.
When he entered the front door, he was surprised to find Toby and Maia still waiting for him.
"Well, that was an awfully long cup of coffee," Toby said.
Dari laughed slightly and blushed as he closed the door and took his coat off. "We decided to go see a movie too."

"So it went well, then?" Maia asked, going over to hug Dari once his jacket was off. "Your very first date! We want to hear everything." Excited parents ready for details? Yes. "Did you have fun? Was he nice?"

Dari hugged Maia back as Toby rose and hugged him to, although Toby lifted him off the ground. Dari laughed and nodded.
"Yes! Yes, I had fun, and he is very nice. We went to see a movie afterward. Coffee didn't seem like enough."
"Did you kiss?" Toby asked, voice lowering as he elbowed Dari in the arm.
"No, no." Dari grinned and laughed at how silly he felt about what he was going to say. "We held hands?"
"Well, that's a start at least!"

"We held hands our first date, too," Maia said, teasing Toby. The day they'd met. She gave Dari another hug. "I'm glad you had fun. Do you have plans for a second date?"

Toby turned and put an arm around Maia's shoulders and pulled her in for a kiss on the cheek. He was excited! His Dari, his little brother, once just a little sample in a petri dish, has gone out on his very first date. These were milestones he thought Dari might just have to miss. Thankfully he had been wrong.
"Yes. Next weekend we're going for a hike."
"To where?" Toby asked.
"I'm not sure. 'Just the place.'" Dari shrugged.

Maia looked a little alarmed, at the vague description of where they were going next. "You'll keep your phone on?" she asked. "He didn't name place you'd be hiking?" Maybe she'd overheard the news too often, but her mind had immediately gone to worst case scenarios.
