Terryn took a seat next to him, avoiding her father's gaze as she filled her plate.
"So what were you talking about?" The earl pretended to be nonchalant, though he failed rather miserably at it.

Marcus, who had just picked up his fork, set it down again. "We were...just talking about our plans," he said, deciding not to lie, but not to divulge too much information either. "For the future."
"Really?" asked the Duchess. "What plans are these?"

"Yes, please, care to divulge your...plans?" He looked between the two, an eyebrow raised.
Terryn looked to Marcus, deciding that he could field this question as she stuck a potato in her mouth.

Marcus raised his eyebrows. I answered the last one, he told her silently, as he coughed on his sprout and reached for a glass.

Terryn sighed and looked to her father. "We...well, at this point we just wish to spend as much time together as we can. Of course, we have only known each other for a few weeks, we are not yet ready for marriage plans or anything of the sort."

The Duchess felt a little dizzy. It would not do, not at all, to have Marcus standing dumbly beside her whilst Terryn was with child. "You are...not ready?" she repeated. She'd have to do away with her plan of being blissfully ignorant."I thought...that under the given circumstances, you would be married quite soon."
By circumstances, Marcus supposed that his grandmother meant their ages. Most girls Terryn's age were either courting or married. Or at a nunnery. "Well, there's still time," Marcus protested.
Only 9 months. "Yes, but, dear, how long do you think you'll be able to keep it a secret?" asked the Duchess sternly.

"A secret?" Terryn gulped, a little scared that they two elders had heard enough to uncover the premise of their entire relationship. "We...we have no secrets to hide." She glanced at Marcus, a guiltridden expression on her face.

The Duchess's nostrils flared. "Not for long you don't."
"Grandmother," said Marcus cautiously. "It's true, it would be the socially acceptable thing to be married, but we--we do not care."

Terryn nodded in agreement. "Marriage at this point, I believe, would be rushing things. After all-" She tried to salvage some of her old aloof dignity, for her father's sake at least. "We are young, things may change. We are not even sure if it will last. It could just...die off."

The Duchess was aghast. "You mustn't speak that way!" she exclaimed. "I know this must be difficult for you--you must be nervous, seeing as how it is your first, and you are so unprepared--but you must willing to work for it's life."

"I-" Terryn looked rather taken back by this whole thing. "I had no idea that you were so driven to make this work. It is my first yes, but Marcus has had many. It is not unlikely that this may not happen and that we may just have to move on."

Horrified, the Duchess shook her head. "My dear, that is only true if you wish it to be. Many people think that it is so simple, so effortless. Nonsense. I myself have had several (not, of course, under your same circumstances), and I honestly tell you that it is not at all as easy as so many make it out to be. My dear, it will be worth it in the end. You'll see."

Terryn simply shrugged, looking at her plate with a frown. All of a sudden, she didn't feel so hungry. "Excuse me, but I do not believe I have much of an appetite right now." She got up from her seat and gave them a polite curtsy before leaving the room.

Marcus stood from the table. "I beg your pardon...she's had a difficult day," he told the elders, before turning to leave.
"Yes, by all means, talk some sense into her," said the Duchess.
Marcus glared, and followed after Terryn.
The Duchess now turned her attention to the Earl. "Do you, also, feel that it is acceptable for them to go unmarried whilst the child is born?"

Terryn had quickly exited the room, returning to the sitting area. She reclined onto the couch, staring blankly ahead as she bit on her bottom lip pensively.
The earl shook his head. "No, no I would think not. It would just cry out scandal..." He sighed, looking at her with a defeated look. "But Terryn told me she has sworn off marriage..." He muttered under his breath. "She also swore off sex, though."
