Vyntyr woke with less of a start and more of a finish, moving her heavy eyelids as if they weighed tons apiece. She had the peculiar floating feeling that one sometimes has when one first wakes up. And then she realized that she was perfectly justified in having that feeling, as she gazed at the world through the peculiar colored haze of a bacta tank. She was reminded of memories that she did not entirely recollect. Instead, she felt a rather odd sense of familiarity with her current predicament. She took a groggy sort of inventory of the situation: she was effectively nude, dressed in the barest gown available, she was breathing through a tube, and she was clearly suspended in a blue liquid.

She imagined that this was pretty par for the course; she had just had a major surgery, she probably needed to recuperate a little bit. What better place to recover than inside a bacta tank? As she slowly regained her senses, she saw Master Laro approach the tank.

"Good morning, Vyntyr. You've been asleep for quite some time. A little disorientation is normal; you've been in hibernation for a week, to give you time to heal. Do you feel well?"

Vyntyr gave a soft, tired nod after taking stock of her physical sensations.

"Then are you ready to come out?"

What a question. Vyntyr was still so sleepy. She felt like she could just close her eyes and...

Vyntyr's eyes opened and blinked rapidly. She saw Master Laro standing in front of her tank. Vyntyr was considerably more awake now, and looked around, alert. She quickly looked over her surroundings and took a breath of the canned air that she was being fed. Master Laro smiled at the girl.

"Feel better?"

Vyntyr nodded.

"Ready to come out?"

She nodded again.

Master Laro nodded and punched in a few commands on the console attached to the tank and the blue liquid began to drain, leaving Vyntyr to sink slowly to her knees.

The tank opened and Master Laro stepped forward to support the girl and removed the sensors and breathing apparatus from Vyntyr's body and face.

Vyntyr was suddenly cold, and her master wrapped her in a blanket. The girl was led to an empty exam room and given a thorough examination. She was still pretty our of it, and was not exactly the most verbose respondent to the questions of the good doctor.

"How did it go?" She finally asked.

Master laro's face --what could be seen of it-- was impossible to read. She swallowed and spoke softly. "It went well, all things considered. The operation was a success. Though..."

Vyntyr frowned "What's wrong?"

Master Laro spoke carefully. "There were... Unexpected side effects of the surgery." She picked something up and held it at her waist.

Vyntyr got worried. "What do you mean?" She immediately assumed the worst. She scrambled to get her wits together and closed her eyes, trying to see through the Force. After a short time, she succeeded... So that isn't it... Then... Vyntyr finally realized what Master Laro was holding; a mirror. She swallowed, but took a breath. "Is it scarring? It's okay. It was a pretty major surgery, it's to be expected. Besides, I mean who's going to notice?"

Master Laro pursed her lips softly. "I think people will notice this, Vyntyr."

Vyntyr was already okay with it. It's not like she wasn't already scarred. She didn't place much stock in appearances anyway. The girl smiled. "It's okay, Master. It's fine. My scars don't make me uncomfortable. I've always had them, they're a part of who I am. My scars-"

Master laro had held up the mirror. Vyntyr's mouth went dry. As she reached up to touch her cheek, she saw a girl, wholly unrecognizable to her, reach up to touch her own cheek. Vyntyr examined the face closely. Smooth, fair skin... Powerful green eyes... Small, upturned nose. Everything about that girl's face suggested a natural, comfortable sort of beauty. Vyntyr took several seconds, just combing the unfamiliar face with her eyes before it finally started to sink in. This girl --this beautiful stranger-- was... Her. Somehow, she had transformed into another person. She looked down at her body. Smooth, flawless skin was the only thing that she saw. She was completely scar free. She touched her face again, and saw those alien green eyes begin to fill with tears.

Vyntyr collapsed, and Master Laro dropped the mirror to catch the girl as her legs gave out. Together, they sank to the floor and the Miraluka quietly held her padawan until the girl had cried herself dry. All was quiet as they sat.

"I... Don't understand..."

Master Laro nodded. "It was not an intended result, but it seems that with the combination of treatments... Well, it seems that when we removed your scars, they just didn't come back."

Vyntyr snuffled. "And my eyes?"

The woman took a breath. "The best guess that we have is that the Dark Side was tainting you, giving your eyes their peculiar color. The operation purged that energy, and your natural eye color reasserted itself."

"That can happen?" the girl questioned.

"The Dark Side corrupts more than just your heart and mind."

Vyntyr just thought for a while. She picked the mirror up delicately. The girl she saw was almost like the one in her vision... "Is this... Is it... Permanent?"

Master Laro nodded. "I believe so."

The girl stared into the mirror in disbelief. She waited for it to all go back to how it had been before. She waited for the scars, and the pain, and those burning yellow eyes to come back and remind her of how hopelessly trapped in her body she really was. But they didn't. And she realized that they wouldn't. And for the first time ever, she saw that stranger in the mirror smile, and her vision blurred with tears.

It was day five of her new life, and Vyntyr had found that very little was as it once had been. She no longer relied on the Force to keep her from falling apart. She no longer woke up with any pain. Her range of motion and even her stamina had improved immensely, since she was no longer constantly on the verge of collapse. In all, it was a rather pleasant experience. Some of the changes were weird, though. She still didn't recognize herself in the mirror, though part of that, too, was not believing that she would still look this way each time she came back to a mirror. Even more disconcerting, though, were the passing encounters that she had with other people.

Accustomed as she was to the way that things used to be, Vyntyr was somewhat uncomfortable with the current state of affairs. People had, for all of the girl's life up to this point, either avoided looking at her or stared without regard to her feelings. Now, she caught them stealing glances and turning away whenever she would look toward them. She could feel eyes on her almost constantly while she was about, and she couldn't for the life of her figure out why. She imagined that it was just because they didn't recognize her. Strange faces were not necessarily an uncommon occurrence, though, so she wasn't entirely convinced of that.

All this attention made her nervous, so she spent more time in her room than was absolutely necessary, venturing out only to eat and to go get her daily checkups with Master Laro. She'd been on bedrest since she'd gotten out of medical, her master having instructed her to rest and recuperate. But all that changed today. She was finally given leave to return to normal activity, and she looked forward to the adventure. She'd felt cooped up and restless with all this time off, and at least if she was training, she wouldn't have to deal with everyone treating her differently. She started small, working cautiously through her old alchaka. It felt strange, but what had once taxed her almost to the breaking point now left her little more than breathless.

Meditation
1/1

Vyntyr took stock of her physical sensations when she completed her exercise, and found that she was intact; nothing seriously wrong at all. She stretched and moved her body fluidly without even the slightest hint of pain. She would need to develop a new alchaka, though; she needed one that would drive her to the brink of exhaustion, not something that she could manage so easily. She decided that she would work through a new set of moves while she went through her morning meditation, and so she did. She outlined a new regimen that was more complex, and determined to begin the next day. But today she had the mind to test her new body's limits, and her alchaka might change again, depending on those results.
