Meda walks into the kitchen, she is very small, for an elf. She walks in her head down. She isn't sure what to do or go. So she just keeps staring at the ground, afraid.

Mendle had the face only a daft artist could love. Or one who was desperate to find a medium reference for a bust that would be both strange yet interesting to stare at from every angle. It's well known in the wizarding world that most House-Elves have large eyeballs and very little hair on their wrinkly little heads, but neither seem to be the case with Mendle. Standing in under three feet tall with an undetermined amount of weight, his malnourished limbs look dwarfed underneath his potato-sack ensemble, which are strung up with bits of twine he must have found lying around some time ago. The very tip of his little red tongue is sticking out between his chapped lips in a vain effort to moisten them, and it doesn't look like he's yet to succeed as he ambles down a torch-lit corridor. Our white-haired friend is heading for the Kitchen; upon his arrival to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he was instructed by his master that he do as he is told while residing at the school, and that he must not hit himself in any manner if he makes a minor mistake. However, Mendle was able to find a loophole in the request: his master said nothing about hitting himself if he himself deemed that his mistake wasn't minor*. The House-Elf stopped before a large, ornate painting of a bowl of fruit and stared at it. He appeared to be confused about something. "Oh bugger, Mendle's forgotten what the master said about this painting," he said aloud to himself, absently scratching an itch on his rear end. Clearly, his master neglected to inform his servant how to gain entry to the area that Mendle was supposed to work in. This wasn't about to stop him however, and he reached up to the painting and patted around for some sort of secret lever. As his knobby-knuckled hand brushed over a pear on the right-hand side of the bowl, it sounded like something nearby was giggling to itself. Mendle stood back from the painting and found that it was free to be swung out into the corridor on hidden hinges. "Aha! Clever Mendle couldn't be bogged down by some ruddy ol' decoration," he said with a smug look as he exited the corridor and entered the Giggling Pear. The painting swung shut behind him, ready for yet another entrant to tickle its pear.*It should be mentioned that there was once a study into the psychology of House-Elfves and their need to physically punish themselves for not following directions correctly. It did not end well.

Upon entry into the kitchen, Mendle picked up the nearest available broom and began to sweep up food scraps that he noticed were laying on the floor here and there. He quickly fell into routine as he worked his way around the other House-Elves, careful to avoid tripping up anyone while he cleaned. A small pile of refuse was beginning to form near the sacks of flour, and once the floor was cleared away to be mopped down, Mendle would be sure to find out wherever it was that Hogwarts puts its trash.

"Perhaps Mendle can be of use elsewhere in the castle," said the House-Elf to himself. Mendle had been sweeping the kitchen floors clean enough that probably even a mote of dust in some crevice of a broken tile wouldn't have been missed. It helped that two bewitched rags were following closely behind his heels, one smearing floor wax onto the kitchen tiles, and the other wiping away excess wax that occasionally built up between tiles. When Mendle arrived at his pile of food scraps and other assorted garbage, he lifted the broom and shook out the dust onto the heap. The two rags behind him lifted away and headed for the nearest sink to wring themselves out and rinse, twisting around other working House-Elves on the way. Mendle, meanwhile, stepped back and snapped his fingers; he still had no idea what Hogwarts does with its trash, since he hadn't been able to ask around quite yet, but he hoped that transporting them into the rubbish bin he came across while cleaning would be sufficient. As the rags finished drying and folded themselves onto the counter beside a sink, Mendle picked up a dustpan on his way out of the Giggling Pear. He planned on coming back later, after exploring the castle a little more while he cleaned.
