I bet they first bonded those times before the journey, when they would get together... just kinda going 'wtf' at Gojyo's and Goku's antics.
And it's clear to see how close they've become (though they all have) throughout the journey so far. As for after... who knows yet?
So to answer to question, I'd say it's a very gradual thing. But that's ok, because the best things take time to develop and mature properly.

I tend to agree with you there. I can see their relationship starting from day 1 when Gonou became Hakkai.
Sanzo wasn't the type of person who went around saving people from anything so it's kinda surprising (to me) when he decided to give a hand in Gonou's case even though he didn't know anything about him at that time. Which showed that he cared for this guy. But why? wink
And in the manga we see that Hakkai and Gojyo visited Sanzo and Goku in the temple from time to time heart

For me, I think the bond starts from way in heavens (TenpouxKonzen). *giggles* Sorry, am being stupid here...
OK, seriously, I think the first hint of a bond between them is during that time when Sanzo told Gonou that one cannot change things if he is dead. Personally I attribute this to the fact that Sanzo had went through a similar ordeal in which he thought life was not worth living (Reload-Burial Arc) and so he could identify with Gonou's mentality at that time.
And I think Gonou knew that Sanzo wasn't just saying those fancy words, you know. I think he also realized that somehow the blonde understood his pain. And then Sanzo led the way to the castle, knowing that Gonou wanted to go there (thanks soreyle!). How on earth did Sanzo know that, when Gonou only mentioned he had an unfinished business before running away from the blondie earlier on?

Uwaa, so the psychic connection started from day 1? Not bad... blaugh
And then of course, we have that temple scene. Sanzo was so darn shweet; he said not to put the cuffs on Gonou.

And well, then we have that scene when the four reunited, when Gonou revealed his new name. In the anime, it wasn't really shown but in the manga, Sanzo looked up with a raised eyebrow when Hakkai said that he'd be moving in with Gojyo.
Mild spark of jealousy?

Wow, everyone had such good explanations of how their bond began O_o you guys pretty much said everything I could think of, and you've placed it in a very nice summary. heart I love all of the posts *__*
rasinah, one hell of a good point with the jealousy there... Sanzo was obviously jealous but he isn't the kind to really show his feelings. I've missed you guys @_@
