Akiko pulled herself up to the fire, wrapping her arms around her knees. The flames felt nice, and Akiko began to thaw out. As each part of her body warmed up, it began to tingle and even hurt a little. But, it was good that she wasn't going to freeze to death in her own garden. She waited a while before responding to the man. "Ah... my... my Aunt Yuki's not... here anymore, so I came here to think... or not think. I don't want to talk about it..." she finally replied, trailing off hesitantly. Sensing an awkward lull in the conversation, she began again. "I... I like to come here when I feel lonely. The flowers are nice, and the water makes my mind still. When I'm here, I don't have to think about anything else... or anything, really. My mind just goes to this place where..." she looked up at the man, an ashamed look prominently displayed upon her face. "I suppose it's rather silly, but, well... you've read about my line, right? About how we have a close connection with chakra? Well, just now it felt like I was in this world made completely of chakra... well, not chakra exactly, I could tell it wasn't the same... somehow, at least. I'm not really sure about anything anymore. But there I was blind and deaf, but I could sense everything perfectly. It was as if this mist surrounding me was passing around anything in its path--this pillar, the flowers, you, my... my body, I suppose. I might be able to replicate that using my own chakra, but I'd imagine I'd have to summon up a great amount of it and then spread it out over a large surface, and then... well, I mean, this is all theoretical, I don't know where to begin, and it's all based off the mechanics of this terribly strange place..." Again, she trailed off, but this time, she had something very important pressing on her mind. At last, she spoke: "I know how this sounds... do you suppose I've gone mad?"

Sukotto listened intently to Akiko speak while gazing into the fire that he had created. He understood the Tenmoki's feeling of loneliness. After all, Sukotto had lost Ichi, Kira, and perhaps Senritsu and Aya over the course of his time in Shimagakure. Before he arrived to the village, he had lost his foster father, and had been forced to leave his foster mother, as the Orochi village that he grew up in had become far too dangerous for an Uchiha to be around. It sounded as if this loneliness that Akiko spoke of caused her to experience something more powerful than a dream, and it had impacted the girl quite a bit. "I don't think you've gone mad. I've had a few strange and powerful visions myself. In fact, one of them led me to creating my very own style of taijutsu. Perhaps you could use this experience and form it into some sort of technique. I think it would be a great way for you to express yourself."

The Uchiha's mind wandered back to the mission that he had recently been assigned to carry out. He figured that after he assembled his new squad at the cliffs, he'd have time for one quick training session to test their abilities and give himself a grasp on what sort of teamwork skills they had developed. If any one of them seemed to be lacking in this department, Sukotto would simply leave them behind, as he had promised to bring everyone back alive, and that would be impossible if they didn't understand how to function on a team. Too many of the younger ninja in Shimagakure were focused on increasing their own individual strength, usually caused by some sort of silly rivalry. After having thought about it a bit, Sukotto figured that it would be best for him to gather up more people for his squad. Akiko seemed to be doing well enough. He'd just ask her one question before leaving. "I'm afraid that I must depart for now. I've been given an important mission to complete and I'm rounding up shinobi from around the village to help me out. Would you be interested in coming along? If you're feeling too weak from the cold, then don't worry about it. The mission will probably be a dangerous one and I'd need you to be ready for it." With that said, the Uchiha rose to his feet and looked down at the girl, awaiting her response. He wondered what sort of jutsu she had in mind. The Tenmoki had always had a knack for accumulating large amounts of chakra through their training and growth, especially in Aya's case. Sukotto wondered if Akiko would match that ability some day.

Akiko was surprised how quickly she was recovering. Already, the tremors were dying down. She listened to the man's words intently while staring into the fire. "I... I suppose I could. Was that what the meeting was about earlier? I heard about it, but... I... I stayed here. I'm sorry..." she muttered, brushing a wet strand of hair out of her eyes. She looked up at the man, her eyes filled with curiosity. Cautiously, she continued, "But... I'm still just an Academy student. I'm not very strong, and my training is far from over. Are... are you sure it's okay? I don't know if I'm ready for something like that..." she paused, looking back down toward the fire. "But... I'd like to try. So many people died, and there can't be that many left. And maybe... maybe I can do something, you know? I hate feeling so useless..."

((The abundance of ellipses is intentional. She trails off a lot, and that's a part of my writing style, anyway.))

The Uchiha nodded as Akiko stated that she was an academy student. He had known this, having known her file. "That's okay though, I'll be around at all times and I'll make sure you don't get in over your head." Sukotto smiled once again, happy to know that the girl was cautious. It was a good thing for her to be careful when it came to accepting offers such as this. He figured it would be a valuable asset to the team if she decided to join. "Besides, you're a Tenmoki, and every Tenmoki I've known has been quite powerful for their age! As long as you work with the team everything will be fine." The Uchiha turned to leave, and spoke to the girl once more. "We've lost a lot of higher ranked shinobi, and a few of us from the younger generation will have to step up to the task of safeguarding the village. If you'd like to join me, then meet me at the cliffs. I'm going to head back to the village center to grab a few vaccines to help combat the infection that has spread after the attack. If you go to the cliffs, I'll bring you one. If you decide against joining me, you should head to the village center to get one yourself." With that, Sukotto began to walk away. "I hope to see you at the cliffs, but if I don't, take care, Tenmoki-Akiko."

Akiko blushed. It had been many days since she last received this sort of praise. Powerful, she? She hadn't even considered it. She hadn't really given herself an honest evaluation before. Was she that strong? She didn't really know any of the other children that well, so she couldn't say if she was stronger than other kids her age. She was certain she wasn't as strong as Aunt Yuki or her cousin Aya. But... she knew they had some considerable power. Maybe... maybe if she tried hard enough, she'd be able to work her way up to their kind of power some day. But, what about now? Could she find the kind of power within her to help the village now? She didn't know, but she had her doubts. Still, she had to see this through now. It wasn't about her, after all.

Things would have been all fine. That is what should have been done. It was an order by the Hyuuga teen and the serpent youth didn’t mind following orders in such a situation. As Shisei rushed away from the area his ears listened to one of the masked assailants behind. One had entered into this part of the village, but it did not concern Shisei. His task was to avoid the enemies while gathering civilians to a safe area if possible. During the pandemonium he managed to grab Lia while Brassa took her twin, Mia. The girl with a rabbit hat had escaped earlier with the surly kid of the group. The Raiken girl was also doing her own civilian saving. It was Serena who brought to his attention that Kanami was in danger. As if natural the serpent youth turned away, but his taller teammate had other ideas.

“Always a mystery…” the boy thought as he opened the door into the Tenmoki Household. Even though his stay in Yuki’s house was short lived, the woman did give him access if he ever wanted to return. Although a homecoming was never his plan. For now it would have to be. There wasn’t space for him to stay anywhere else. The housing district was still being rebuilt; the one house for all the kids was crammed. The clinic was crammed. The boy wasn’t going back to the Tategami Grounds and sleep in the wilderness again. Out of process of elimination Yuki’s home would be the best place. Especially since most of the family was missing or approaching death. There was one other that may have been around, but that didn’t matter to Shisei. The house was large enough where the two wouldn’t have to meet. It appeared that the last Tenmoki was not in at the moment.“Heh…” the boy thought. The last Tenmoki. The last Orochi. Shimagakure was becoming a place for endangered races. The new situation of the village took care of all that would become threats to him in the future. Yet this did not please Shisei as much as he believed it would have.

It took a few minutes for the youth to retrieve his weapon. Kanami did not lie when she said she left it here. His body then went into the part of the house that was used for training. The wrist that gripped the golden instrument felt awkward. Shisei could only hope this was not a lasting effect.

The teen’s left wrist held the weapon. Fenghuang was not an easy weapon to use for the boy. The weapon was nearly taller than him after all. Little things like that would not deter Shisei from his focus. When it cae to setting his mind at a task the boy was like a hunting pit viper. He only saw in tunnel vision towards his task. Unfortunately mental determination and physical are different things. The Orochi youth made a quick horizontal slash. The weapon opened out to its wing like form revealing its amber colors. The boy’s wrist though felt a small tinge which caused all five fingers to release the weapon. Fenghuang floated in a circular pattern into the corner of the room leaving Shisei to stare at it while rubbing his wrist. Did his wrist and technique get so week from the time being in the clinic? It was not a thought the boy wanted to cross. The dread hair slowly walked over to his weapon.

“Now, get your pale butt out here. I’ll teach you Henge tonight and you can learn the rest tomorrow.”

Those words rang through Shisei’s head. Didn’t Yuki tell him that before? Yes. There were memories in this little training shack.

Nostalgia. Not just the training shed, but the entire house felt nostalgic. It was a weird feeling for the Orochi as he did not create any lasting memories in the family’s house. There wasn’t anything worth of significance in his mind of the place. Yet some things did echo in his ear from those times of the past. “I’ll teach you Henge tonight and you can learn the rest tomorrow.”

“And for your information, the Orochi are my family too.”

“Bold words…” the kid thought. Then again it didn’t matter now. That family was gone. The same one whom sat around their dinner table on his first night in Shimagakure. They now were only phantoms of memories. Pale fingers picked back up the tessen. The child wondered for a few seconds what that family would have been today if they stayed together. The weapon was closed again and Shisei tried the same move again. The tessen smoothly made a horizontal slash in the air. It was not going at any particular target. Once his arm extended its furthest he brought the fan back close to his body and pushed it before him as if he was stabbing with a sword. The shinobi student did that three times and then brought the weapon to a halt. Gold eyes surveyed the weapon and his wrist for a few seconds. Time to try something else.
