I can store all sorts of knowledge and access it with ease, but trying to use any of the knowledge on my own is as hard as trying to convince Hono that the dentist is not the modern day version of a torture master." sweatdrop They had gone to the dentist all of once with Hono... Bren had said that his teeth hurt but it wasn't some thing that healing made go away. Hono had spent all of five minutes watching the dentist and her assistant poke around in the boys mouth with their little mirror and hooked scraper before she had passed Samantha her credit card and left to wait in the car with the driver, seeming repulsed as well as shaken at the experience. Sam often wondered how she would have reacted if she had had to stay for the X-ray or the explanation to the boy that he had a wisdom tooth growing in and then recessing again so that the damn thing couldn't be removed safely at the time and he would just have to deal with the pain until the tooth dropped down far enough to be cut out of his mouth xp

Sam could only smile and shrug a bit... she was Odin's attempt to bypass that strange rule of the universe after all, the All Father's little cheat to keep his mind from becoming too clouded by the past. The way she figured it, she and Hugin were the ancient equivalent to a computer database, an infinite amount of storage and a processor to put all the stored information to good use!
She still thought it was a good plan, and would have worked if Odin hadn't listened to Loki's clever tongue and started to distrust everyone around him including the most loyal of all his subjects.. his ravens.

"Basic history 101 with modern rephrasing... The runes were first brought to light by Odin, he fished them out of a well that was supposed to be connected to the true creative force of the universe." Sam flipped the paper she had been writing names on over and quickly sketched out the 24 runes that made up the original Norse written language, along with their modern pronunciations.



"Now at first he intended the Runes to be his own private little system to tap into that power as well as a way for him to remember things without having to keep them in his own head, since the runes are just lines without a bit of power to... shall we say, kick start them?!" She ripped the page off the pad and handed it to John so he could look them over for himself.

"That is usually easiest, although it doesn't require channeling for the simpler things.. a drop or two of blood would work just fine." Sam nodded and jotted down a set of runes on the clean page of the pad.

"Now power aside there are two different ways to read a rune.. the new way is where each rune has a phonetic sound to it.. but in the original way each rune had a meaning that could have tones depending on the situation. Think of it like how some words in this language have a meaning, but that meaning needs a lot of other words to even start to explain it.. like Soul!" She drew a single rune under the little string she had already traced out before showing him both.

Essentially they both said the same thing, but the single run all by itself almost had an aura of power even without the mana that they had mentioned.

"More important you have to have the idea of what tone you want firmly fixed in your mind!" Sam absently bit at her nail as she looked through her mind for the right example.

"For instance if you want something to burn you could spell out fire or even burn, or you could combine runes that held the suggestion of burning so long as you concentrated on what you wanted to happen when you fed the runes enough power to do what you want them to do."

Sam had figured it would come to this, so she held out her paper with its sets of runes, and a pin that she snagged off the bedside table.

"Light, Illumination, Glow, and Bright! Please try not to think of flames as you power each of them... I hate having to use the chemical fire extinguisher in the house.. it smells funny, and the smoke alarm would wake my Mother!" whee Likely Hono had given the girl a chance to find that out first hand.

Same smirked as he tried to remind himself about the no fire thing, but she nodded in satisfaction as a florescent glow emanated from the paper as if their was a lamp there and not just a piece of paper.

John wouldn't be likely to notice the tiny drain that powering such a small spell put on his energy. "Good, try the next."

Sam shaded her eyes as the new rune blasted a focused bean of light straight out of the paper, glad only that he had not thought to make the light an attack of some sort xp "You are getting the hang of it.."
