Ovarian cysts are very common during pregnancies. Cysts can go down on their own, but it is unlikely a large cyst in pregnancy will do so. Ultrasound can be helpful in determining if a mass is benign or malignant, but it cannot do so with 100% certainty. The problem with large cysts during pregnancy is that they may rupture or twist. Either of these events leads to significant pain for mom and the potential for preterm labor and delivery for the baby but miscarriages are not common with cysts. Most physicians will actuall remove the cyst during the pregnancy, especially if she was only at nine weeks. The possibility of a miscarriage is only after the end of the first trimester so it must have been something more than just a cyst.
