SPORTS TIME FOR ME AND DEAN!
CAMP DECISIONS:
Obviously there are always a ton of personnel decisions to be made during training camp, and it always depends on injuries and any further roster moves, but at this early date, I thought I'd review what I see as the most interesting on the horizon...
O-LINE: I see players sure to stay as M. Light D. Koppen L. Mankins N. Kaczur T. Ashworth S. Neal R. Hochstein B. Gorin the only decision I see here is what to do with G. Mruczowski and J. Roehl
BACKS: I see players sure to stay as T. Brady C. Dillon K. Faulk C. Cobbs P. Pass The interesting decisions will involve who will be the backup QB and how-many will there be? Right now, my best guess is Flutie will be the vet, and Cassel will be the developmental, however they haven't seen Flutie, Redman, or Cassel run the team yet, and Redman's health is still a question. I don't believe Rohan Davey will be kept - I think they have seen enough that they have been disppointed with, and they are ready to cut bait, but of course you never know, How the others do will effect that decision.
RECEIVERS: I see players sure to stay as D. Branch D. Givens B. Johnson B. Watson D. Graham I see tight end as basically a question of who will be the third? I don't think the guy they drafted will do anything but land on the practice squad, if that. I see it being between Jed Weaver and Christian Fauria. I liked what I saw out of Weaver last year - played well, is huge, and is younger and cheaper than Fauria. With Graham and Watson now ahead of him, and with Weaver looking good as a third, I think they'll decide to save the money on Fauria. I see Wide Receiver as needing to be sorted out after the starters. I still think they should and will sign Troy Brown back for insurance depth, until the others have proven themselves. I see David Terrell and Tim Dwight as good signings, but needing to come in and work hard and play well, and pick up the offense and mesh well with the QB and the offense. If they do, we'll have good depth. If they don't, we could be a little thin, hence the Brown consideration. I think it's a mistake to either assume the new guys are a given or that Brown can't/won't provide good insurance. I'm confident BB won't leave us vulnerable in the end. As far as P.K. Sam goes, he was a late round pick, and this roster is becoming harder and harder to stash players with potential for the future on. I don't know if they can get away with putting him on an injury list or the practice squad again this year. Like Rohan Davey, he hasn't shown us anything yet, but unlike Davey, he hasn't had much time to. Then there were the rumors that he had a bit of an attitude, which may or may not have been accurate. Suffice to say, with the roster being such a tight numbers game, he needs to make a good impression of being able to contribute in camp.
SPECIAL TEAMS: I see players sure to stay as A. Vinatieri J. Miller L. Paxton There's really no drama of any sort here.
D-LINE: I see players sure to stay as R. Seymour V. Wilfork T. Warren R. Bailey J. Green M. Hill I don't see Ethan Kelley as making the team. I think he's too unproven, and the other guys are so versatile that we don't really need him. Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Green can all play the nose if need be. And I don't rule out them working Hill in there over time as well. They are great at coaching up and having players learn to play other positions. I could be wrong and they could keep Kelley for depth, but I'd be a bit surprised if they do because of the roster numbers game and Kelley's lack of experience.
LINEBACKERS: I see players sure to stay as W. McGinest M. Vrabel T. Johnson C. Brown R. Colvin M. Beisel R. Claridge L. Izzo I see Bruschi as not being ready to start the season, and possibly sitting it out. As time goes on, who knows? I see the interesting remaining close calls as D. Davis, D. Klecko, M. Chatham, T. Banta-Cain, & W. Mallard I have no idea which ones make it and which ones don't. Here are my best guesses: D. Davis will not make it because he is older, and with the increased depth they have now, he will be cut in favor of a younger player that's got a chance to improve and plays special teams well. That description fits all four of the remaining players. I think how they do in camp, and of course any injuries will be key. Right now, I think Klecko & Chatham go into camp with the edge, but we haven't seen Mallard, and we just don't know what they'll decide.
D-BACKS: I see players sure to stay as D. Starks (I'm assuming he's fully recovered and fine) A. Samuel E. Hobbs R. Gay R. Harrison E. Wilson (I'm assuming he's fully recovered and fine) G. Scott (I'm assuming he's fully recovered and fine) J. Sanders D. Reid I see the interesting question here as will Tyrone Poole retire or play and be effective? If he's a definate go, it'll be a tougher numbers game against Chad Scott. If he retires, I see them possible keeping Scott for added depth.
So I see the real 'bubble' players as boiling down to: D. Flutie, M. Cassel, C. Redman, R. Davey, J. Weaver, C. Fauria, (T. Brown?), D. Terrell, T. Dwight, P.K. Sam, D. Davis, D. Klecko, M. Chatham, T. Banta-Cain, W. Mallard, T. Poole, C. Scott With an unlikely outside shot to: G. Mruczkowski, J. Roehl, A. Stokes, E. Kelley
Should be a great team! I'm really looking forward to seeing how all the young guys perform - our new draft picks plus guys returning like Guss Scott & Ben Watson. Our depth of real talent, youth, and well-run salary cap is looking fantastic! Seeing how Duane Starks, Chad Brown, Monty Beisel, Doug Flutie, David Terrell, and Tim Dwight play will be fun as well.
I feel as if my concern with losing Andruzzi has been addressed. I feel as if my concern with lack of confidence in Rohan Davey has been addressed. I feel as if my concern with losing Ty Law has been addressed. I feel as if my concern with probably losing Tedy Bruschi has been addressed.
My only remaining concerns are depth at Wide Receiver, after losing David Patten and possibly Troy Brown and I'm confident that will be addressed one way or another, and How the loss of Weis & Crennel will be handled, and I'm equally confident that will be handled.
The way I see it, not only have we addressed (or will address) all of our concerns/losses, but we have dramatically improved via free-agency, the draft, and the return to health of various players. I see this team as strong on all fronts, and in tremendous shape to make a strong run at a three-peat!!
Gonna be fun to watch!
What you do you think, Dean? and others too. And WTF is with Foulke... and Tek did great yesterday with the Sox.

Here is how I feel about Foulke:
It is only April and I am reasonably confident based on his track record that Foulke will return to form at some point. It's not time to panic, and he did go into a few ruts last season.
But all that said, I have to admit I have had zero confidence in him so far this season. To me, it was a foregone conclusion that the Orioles were going to tie the game (although a 4-run inning was a bit uglier than I expected) when he came in tonight.
It may be, as suggested here, a lack of velocity. I don't know. I haven't been tracking his velocity too closely. But to me, the lack of command is a bigger issue. He doesn't seem to be hitting his spots -- and even topping out in the low 90s (let alone the mid-80s), you're not going to have much luck if you're not putting the ball where you want it. Especially not without a breaking ball in the mix.
Apart from exploring the possibility that he might be hurt, I don't know what the Sox can or should do. You don't demote the guy because of one bad month (and I don't trust anyone else with the closer's job, either...the bullpen as a whole has been much less than advertised so far). But it's awfully frustrating when anytime you go into the last two innings with less than a two run lead you feel as though disaster is imminent...and I've felt that since the first week. I do think it will turn itself around - not just Foulke, but others in the pen - but April games do mean something, even if individual April performances don't, so I hope the turnaround comes soon.
My brother Gabe thinks of it this way:
This 'rut' seems to be a bit longer than any of his 'ruts' last year, and that is cause for concern for me. If his slump persists into May or June or later, I expect Theo to make an out-of-organization move. There are numerous good closers on teams that might very well be out of it before too long. Just throwing some names out: Percival (or even our old friend Urbina, but that might not be wise), Cordero (maybe), and a few others.
Commenting to Gabe's view.. I gotta say Octavio Dotel, Danys Baez.

AKILLA I don't see Ethan Kelley as making the team He made the team last year when we had both Wilfork and Traylor. Now we've cut Traylor AND we will cut Kelly? And don't be so quick to discount Stokes. People look at when he was drafted and say, "practice squad if that" but that is not automatic. If BB didn't think he could make the team he wouldn't have been drafted. Stokes was highly productive in college, if with lesser competition. If he shows great upside, you may see him as the third TE. We don't run THAT many 3TE sets. My opinion Ace.. so I guess you can say that I kind of disagree with you. No arguements. Here is the roster that I think will happen: Kelley and Hill were both on the roster and inactive for almost every game. -------------------------- I must post a roster every week or so, so here's another. SPECIALISTS (3) Vinitieri, Miller and Paxton =========================== OFFENSE (24) QB Brady, Flutie, Davey RB Dillon, Faulk, Cobbs FB Pass WR Branch, Givens, Terrell, Johnson, (Dwight), Sam TE Graham, Watson, Fauria OL Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Gorin Ashworth, Hochstein, Mruczkowksi, Kayczur 1. I don't think Fauria is in any trouble at all. However, it is no big deal to me if Weaver makes the team instead. 2. I do expect 9 OL's given the inexperience, and the likelihood that either Neal or Ashworth will be gone next year. We are set for a couple of years with this group. 3. I'd really like to see Bethel be our punt returner so that we can cut Dwight. I like the Terrell pick up a lot. I see no reason to cut Sam. He made the team last year, as the youngest player in the league, and hass four years left on his contract. 4. I'd like to Redman or Cassel beat out Davey. 5. As long as someone steps up as the #3 receiver, and someone as the punt returner, we have no holes on offense. this offense is stronger than last year at OL, backup QB, and at TE, and weaker at no position, with the possible exception of WR. ================================ DEFENSE - THE POSITION PLAYERS (21) DL (7) Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Green Hill, Bailey, Kelly LB (7) McGuinist, Vrabel, Johnson, Beisel, Colvin, Brown Claridge DB (7) Starks, Poole, Samuel, Gay, Harrison, Wilson, Sanders, (Chad Scott) 1. Green will get lots of reps; I'd like to him extended. 2. I think we need 7 DL's. We could add a fa, but not likely. 3. Claridge and Sanders are the two defensive developmental players for this year. They may be active, if their special team play is good enough; but in any case, they are the future. 4. There is good chance that Chad Scott will beat out Poole. 5. I don't see Klecko beating out TJ as some do. ======================================= THE SPECIAL TEAMERS (5) Izzo, Hobbs, Reid, Banta-Cain, Scott 1. Izzo is the special teams all-pro. 2. Hobbs was drafted as a gunner and to play all the ST's. 3. Reid played reasonably well last year on special teams, and has much upside potential. 4. Banta-Cain is a decent pass rusher and good on special teams, but Mallard or Davis could beat him out. 5. I have Gus Scott coming back. We can only hope. If not, another STer will be waiting. 6. Note that Pass is a soldi special teamer, and plays on almost all the units. ============================== JUST MISSED Dwight and Chad Scott, although both are likely to make the team in case of injuries in camp. =============================== THE "SIGNIFICANT" PLAYERS LEFT OUT QB Redman, Cassell TE Weaver, Stokes OL Yates, Roehl LB Klecko, Mallard, Davis, Alexander, Chatham 1. I don't think these are major losses. 2. Some will be put on the practice squad. 3. I'm fine with Redman or Cassell beating out Davey. 4. Contrary to public opinion, I don't think any of these players are just waiting to be snapped by others. If so, I wish them well. 5. I DON'T think the big fight in camp will be about roster spots. It is more about the depth chart and playing time.

Now about Foulke...
Mantei was a disaster to start the season last year in Arizona in the closer's role. He was apparently hurt at the time, but after missing nearly an entire season, he needs a lot more work before we could even think about having him close a game. If anyone is going to close a game, it's going to be Timlin. However, talk like this is way too premature. Foulke is our closer and let's hope he irons things out quickly.
IF Foulke can get another couple of mph back, the pitch location will come. Foulke is not out there collapsing from self-doubt. He looks to be unready for the MLB season as we near the end of April. That's bad news, and it speaks ill of his offseason conditioning if true. But if he just needs work, by mid-May we'll have the closer we need for October.
If there's something else going on and he's really lost 2-3 mph on his fastball, then he's not going to get better. None of the names I've seen mentioned so far as trade possibilities are good enough closers to justify their acquisition cost in trade. Unless anyone considers one of the current Red Sox pitchers to be a closer candidate--Mantei has done it before, Timlin probably has the nerves for it, and converting a starter is always an option--it's probably best to leave Foulke in the role.
There are a few critical players--Manny, Schilling, Varitek for example--who are so important to the team as it's structured for 2005 that you've got to count on them to perform, because if they don't, the team isn't going to win. After looking at options, I consider Foulke to be in that category.

gonk ive had enough. *idea* you guys are in trouble. American Eagle - A totally cute store. Really good prices, too. I love the t-shirts they have! And amazing jeans. I really like the guy's stuff there, too. But not many guys I know like it.. well.. the hot ones do! A lot of their stuff like the tunics and the wraparound sweaters are madefor girls with bigger chests. Ah well, it's a good store all around. Jacob - Oh. My. God. I love this store. It's like.. a fresh clean style and it isn't clunky. They keep copying my looks, though. *should be their spokesperson*. It's.. super expensive though. So, if you need to look together, Jacob is the place to go. 3nodding I really like their button downs and their khakis. They have awesome bags. They should make trenches, though. Genius design. <<<<< Jean Machine - Wow. I really love JM. I haven;t bought anything from there as of yet, but I've had my eye on a pair. They sell parasuco. And as it's hard to find that brand here, JM is a good place to find it! They sell tops, too. They're kind of skimpy, but if you've got the figure, go for it! The jeans, however, are orgasmic. Any look, Any wash, Any fit. It's... Utopia. For denim wearers of all kinds. Bluenotes' - Holy.. *CENSORED*. This store is.. Yeeeeeessssss. They have sesame street! Vintage bands! John Deere! and really saucy tees! It is. The. Perfect. Store. Cute accessories, too! The jeans are cool, but the tees are my favourite part! It's wearable to anyone.. who knows what the shirts mean. xd . This store looks SOOO aborable on guys, too. If any guys have stuck around this long, this is the store to look good! Cute girls come in here, too! Well, if you like women. Boathouse - Yay! They carry Emily Strange, Paul Frank, Punkyfish, Billabong, You name it. Amazingly sweet shoes, too! DC's, Converse.. jeez. I love it. I'm going to connect this one with another store. West 49 - Guys will want to read this, too. XP. I. Love it. I don't buy stuff here all the time, but when I have the cash, it's first stop! Like Boathouse, its got the brands. Only, more of a dark look. Amazingly hot guys. Seriously. That's why i go there to look and BH to buy! whee Yeah. I shopreviewed. You girls follow up!

Awesome idea red!
American Eagle-Awesome awesome store! They have really cute clothes, it's good quality and the prices are really reasonable. I seriously love that store.
Stitches-Yet another awesome store. Their clothes isn't as cute as American Eagle but it's still awesome. It too has good quality as well as reasonable prices. Plus they almost always have sales going on so it's awesome.
La Senza-Awesome store to get underwear from. They have so many styles and they have really cute patterns. Plus the prices are pretty reasonable and it's comfy underwear with minimal to no wedgies whee They have thongs too but I don't wear those...
Mariposa-I like their nicer stuff though their normal stuff is okay too. I hate their t shirts however since they're like the kind that show off your belly button and I hate those. They have some really cute skirts both long and short as well as cute tops and they've got reasonable prices.
Sirens-Generally I don't like the styling of most of their clothes but some of their clothes is cute and it's deffinately priced reasonabally.
Wal*mart-I hate wal*mart's clothes. Sure they may be styled like most teen stores but they're way cheaper. You may say that's good but it's poor quality which is bad.
Zellers-Deffinately better then wal*mart but still cheap clothes and cheap quality. Which is why I rarely shop there
Sears-They have cute bathing suits and cute pyjamas and sometimes their other clothes is cute but generally it's more like clothes for people who aren't teens.
Reitmans-Heh I used to shop there when I was little now I rarely go there since they only have kids clothes and then clothes that isn't really teenish so I tend to stay away from there.
That's all I can think about for now.

You guys think a topic about stores are going to scare me, Dean, my brother Gabe (I got Gabe to join Gaia.. he'll be on here soon.))?
Champ's Sporting Goods- The price of sneakers are good.
EMS- One of the best places to get sporting gear like if you're going to go rock-climbing, ect; but it's damn expensive.
d**k's Sporting Goods- One of the best stores ever.. things are so expensive though. I get some of my hockey gear there, but I sometimes get UnderArmour stuff there.
The Red Sox store- One of my favorite stores.. hell it's rank like 1st. It's the dream place for Sox fans.... www.yawkeywaystore.com (I think that's the address)
Bub's BBQ (I ran out of stores and you never said I couldn't put resteraunts.)- One of the best places for BBQ in Southern New England (where I live). It's a great place!
Wendy's- I don't know... it's just a nice place.
DQ- They got good ice cream but not compared to the Ben & Jerry's shop downtown or Bart's in downtown.
Olive Garden- They have great Italian food, not compared to what my grandma makes.
That's it for now. And I WILL be switching the topic over to sports once I argue with Dean which will be in a few minutes.

After looking at options, I consider Foulke to be in that category. Great analysis Dean 3nodding . Here's my opinion: I don't think its a velocity issue. When you are a closer and you don't throw hard, you are banking on pinpoint command. Foulke has struggled with location/command so can you realistically expect him to perform well? No. Look at what happened to Pedro. When he flamed out his shoulder and couldn't throw the cheese anymore, he needed to develop command of his other pitches, which he did, and just about better than anyone else. When Pedro is missing location, he gets blasted (a la the early inning struggles last year). Foulke is going through a similar situation and I think that the command is a bigger issue than dropping a couple of miles on the fastball, although they may not be mutually exclusive. Let's Go

I absolutely hate your receiver depth chart. relying on David Terrell, bethel johnson and pk sam after your starters is playing with fire. If Terrell stinks and a starter gets hurt, you have no Troy Brown and no Tim Dwight. That said, I agree with a lot of your reasoning. Here's some difference of opinions, that you've already said to some, you'd be fine with: I like either Redman or Cassel as number 3 ahead of Davey. I'm not sure they'd risk losing Cassel the way they were talking about him, but they might. Then again, they might keep 4 QB's like Brady's rookire year, but I kinda doubt that one. I just want davey gone. I'm on an island believing Troy Brown is still gonna be our third receiver. God I hope I'm right ! Weaver over Fauria seems to make so much sense. I don't see us needing Mruczkowski. The rooks will be fine and coached up quickly. I want to see Ethan Kelley play a game or two before I start cutting quality players to keep him. I think both him and Mruc wouldn't get picked up if slashed. They could call them back if needed. I think our DLineman have enough versitility to do without a ton of backups. I'm just a little surprised Banta-Cain is beating out Klecko and Chatham. Not neccesarily disgreeing, just a little surprised. My opinion on this whole roster thing: WIDE RECEIVER I am also concerned with depth at WR, and have less confidence in Bethel Johnson than you do. There will be a lot of competition, possibly including Troy. I would like to see Terrell, Johnson and/or Sam step up. PUNT RETURNER Do we have one? Do we have a backup? I guess we'll find out in camp. OFFENSIVE LINE I think Mruc has a better chance then you think. We SHOULD keep 9 OL's. We will then be all set for the future, whether or not Neal and Ashworth are in their last year. DEFENSIVE LINE A 3-4 DL with only six players!!! This is simply a bet about injuries. We play five players in the rotation, plus linebackers. I don't understand your logic with regard to Kelly. He was on the team last year as an emergency backup to Wilfork and Traylor. He was kept on the team all year, even though we had Green who has experience STARTING at NT. Now, Kelly has another year under his belt, Traylor is gone, and you don't think we need a backup NT. I would submit that IMHO Kelly or a free agent will make the roster as the 7th DL. A couple of years ago, we carried 8 DL's. And BTW, we've yet to see anything out of Hill or Bailey. Kelly is a know quantity, certqainly good enough to be one of the roster's bottom five. --------------------- SPECIAL TEAMS This unit is about much more than a kicker, a punter and a long snapper. This unit has been the one of three key areas that Pioli has focused on in the offseason (along with ILB and OL). It is misleading to consider Izzo a linebacker. He will make the team as a special teamer, or not at all. Mallard, Davis, TBC, Reid and several more will make the ST unit, and BTW they can play a bit at a particular position. Thes players are active aevery week, and are key members of the team. Now D let's don't pick fights. That is a great roster though
