i didn't want to create a thread, but i had a question.......how does one know when to make a transition from a crib to a bed with railings? my son is still small enough for the crib, but i'm wondering when the next step should be......

My kids stayed in the crib for a while, but then we never had trouble with them trying to crawl out or anything. Ty got moved out when Luke came along and we needed the crib for him. Luke got moved out when we moved out of the house just so we wouldn't have to pack the crib. Both of them were close to 2 I think. They probably could have come out sooner, but we were just lazy about it.

I transferred Lissa to a toddler bed at 11 months and Bella to the bottom of a bunk bed just recently after she turned 1.
It is my opinion with my kids that if they sleep through the night and do not cry when I put them down to bed it's time for a bed. If they get out and fall asleep on the floor well then who cares, it's not going to damage them.
Also, yes, they do get out of bed, but it only takes a week of putting them back before they don't get out anymore. Bella loves her bed. She'll bring me her bear and get a pacifier and I'll follow her and say, get in bed! and she'll go in there hop up in crawl over to her stuffed animal pillow nest and pull the blankie up over her. XD

nopenname, kasumiangel and panda, thank you for your awnsering my question. i thought that the crib i had would convert into a toddler bed, but when i looked at the directions, it didn't, it only converts to a day bed, and after reading what you guys wrote, i realiezed that i needed a toddler bed.....and at the time, i had no idea what they were called sweatdrop until i surfed around looking at them
i visited with my husband about it, he believes that ben isn't reading for a toddler bed yet. he doesn't know how to walk independently at the moment, though he does know how to get down from the couch and from our bed when i sit him on top of it. i almost feel as if we should get one and try it out....but then i do worry because he doesn't know how to walk, is he ready? also when he sleeps at night, he moves around a lot in his crib....i was kinda hoping that we could move him out of the crib into a toddler bed before the new baby comes in august....but i don't want him falling out and hurting himself.......

Toddler beds also take crib mattresses. Although I know you're worried about him falling off a regular bed, they do make siderails you can buy for twin beds. I put Logan's bed up against a wall, so you'd only need one if you did it that way.
If you don't really want to move him out, it's not a biggie unless he's getting out. I figure why mess with a good thing if they don't fight it. However, I do know you need the crib, so I'd look into a used toddler bed or just going ahead with the twin bed.
