Maria and the eagle landed just as the boy disappeared into the village. The eagle told her that there was no way they'd let her in, and she huffed. What good was being a princess if she wasn't able to get anything done? So, she had the eagle fly her up to a low cave in the mountain's face, and she called up a few burrowing creatures to keep her warm as she slept, trying to figure out how to get the raven back to Mesilici.

The boy sighed softly as he was taken to the same elder that had allowed him in. He sat down in front of the old man. "Hey Gramps..." he muttered quietly; the man only sighed, but smiled through his thick white beard and mustache. "Grandson... It's good to see you. But what are you doing back here? Didn't you go to learn at that mythic school?" The boy only huffed. "I-I don't like it there. Everyone hates me. And I'm not learning anything new." he said, not looking to the old man who sighed heavily. "You may be my grandson, but... But you do know where your place is here, now that you have returned..." the elder said, looking at the boy who simply bowed his head. "Can we just get it over with?"

Maria, unable to sleep, found she was able to watch the town from her cave. She sat on the edge of the cliff, watching the town carefully. It was filled with raven souls, and she soon found the chained one that was the boy. Oh he'd go back to Mesilici all right. She'd make sure of it. She couldn't be the only miserable one there.

The elder slowly stood, the boy following suit. The man led the boy down to the basement where a cage resided and inside was just pitch black. Two guards followed by a team of priests took the boy into the cage and chained the boy's arms to his sides, helping him sit down on the floor, putting a shackle around his neck, which was attached by a thick chain to the ceiling. Once the other ravens left the cage and it was locked shut, large runes glowed a menacing purple. Soon the boy began to cry out in pain as everyone began to leave the room.

Outside, lights flickered on. Something ravens had been rumored to possess. Lights that worked outside that were unaffected by rain or snow, or anything. Soon there were bright signs glowing, streetlights, and even businesses were now lit, the new light engulfing darkness and weak little fire lights alike.

The boy just say in his prison, crying from the pain he was in, but he didn't move to fight or break free. This is all I'm good for... I-I'm just a monster anyways.... This way... I... I'm not completely useless...

Maria watched as the lights of the village lit themselves up, and she was impressed for a few moments. Before she saw the flickering of the chained raven's soul. She frowned, trying to figure out what was going on. Then her eyes widened. He'd just returned to a village that was draining the life from him to sustain themselves! For as much as she disliked him, and for as much as she wanted to get him back to Mesilici for her own selfish reasons, she realized she couldn't just let him stay there. They would kill him! She tried to find a way to get into the town, and then she saw it. A soul that wasn't a raven, but was masked as one. Someone in the town was pretending to be one of them, but wasn't really.

The boy continued to sit in his cell, letting the pain just come, wave after wave. But he kind of felt better, knowing his cursed blood was being used for such a good cause. Up above in in the town, all the ravens seemed so glad to have the lights on. But all of them flocked to the market, buying flowers, charms, and other good luck items, and things to ward off pain. And all the ravens in the town brought them to a little shrine in the middle of the town square. As they left their offerings, they prayed and thanked their little bringer of light.

Maria watched as everyone in the town seemed to be paying homage to a shrine. She didn't understand the custom, but she supposed it was to thank the boy for providing the light. It was sick that they would do so, even as he was clearly dying little by little. But, much to her advantage, the pretend raven began to move through the town. Eventually, he left through the gates, headed into the forest. He wasn't prepared for a long journey, and she realized he'd return to the town. Perfect. She called for the eagle, who took her to the ground. There, she followed the pretend raven.

This pretend raven was a nondescript man from the town. He worked as a healer, though his trainer was a mystery to them all. He'd somehow managed to prove his bloodline to the town, and they'd welcomed him, especially after he proved his usefulness. But who he was really was a mystery to Maria.

She summoned a pair of jungle panthers, who stalked the man before pouncing. They had him pinned to the ground, when Maria told him where she was from and what she wanted. It took an hour or two of convincing, but finally he was willing to help her get the raven out of there. She didn't tell him about her conflicting motives, and he didn't ask. Secretly, he agreed with her. The raven demon should be released. Maria didn't bother asking why he was hiding in the town, and didn't bother asking what his reasons were. She didn't care. But she did threaten to expose to the town what he was if he didn't help her. He agreed.

The lights lasted into the night until the moon had reached halfway from midnight until dawn. A loud bell began to sound and people started to head home with their sleepy children. And as they prepared for bed, lights started being turned off, candle light replacing it. As the number of lights on dwindled, the pain eased away. Once they were all out, the boy laid down on the floor, exhausted. He could hear the cage unlock and he could feel the guards or the priests pick him up and take him to a bed. A great bed that comforted his aching body. It didn't take him long to fall asleep, all the little presents presented to the shrine taken to the boy as homage for his suffering to provide for others.

Maria's plan was ready. She waited in the shadows of the forest surrounding the village, surrounded by animals that had naturally gravitated to her presence. She was wrapped in a cloak that a pair of monkeys had snatched from somewhere, and the black garment blended into the black stallion she was seated on. The two were practically part of the shadows.
The healer approached the home where the boy was kept and knocked on the door softly.

The guards posted by the door glanced at it, hearing a knock on the other side. One turned and looked through a slat in the door, glaring down at the healer. "What are you doing out? Didn't you hear the curfew bell? Return to your home." the guard said harshly. Rules were rules, no exceptions. Especially with the little raven they were guarding.

The healer wasn't frightened by the guard and he stood his ground. "I want to see the boy's grandfather."

Meanwhile, a pair of mice were slowly gnawing the wood around the hinges of the village gates. They didn't make any noise, and there would be no trace of them in the morning.

The guard glanced to the other, muttering before opening to the door. The other guard bowed politely to the healer and led him to the old man, the elder of the village. The elder looked up to see his visitor, looking at papers by candle light since the curfew bell had been rung. "And what can I do for our esteemed healer at such a late hour?"

The healer bowed his head and took a deep breath. "I believe I may be able to do something to help...Numb the pain for your grandson. It would make this easier for him, and I'm sure for you, as well."
PostPosted: Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:22 pm

The elder sighed and stroked his beard before looking to the man again. "You of all ravens should know the customs behind this. After all, you possess a bloodline ancient enough to rival my own. I do not force my grandson to do this. He does this of his own free will. And under those circumstances, he is to bear the pain. He is allowed to rest from curfew bell until evening bell." the old man said, looking back to his papers. "True this is not easy for me to bear. My heart is old and frail, and it breaks to see him in pain. But he just wants to help us. If you try to aid him, or numb his pain, there will be consequences. You should know them. Any raven should." the elder said, glancing to the pretend raven. After all, the punishment of aiding the light bringer when they did not ask was death.

The pretend raven nodded, and sighed. "But something must be done. Anything at all. I don't care about consequences."
