Haucon looked at her. Could she possibly not understand? "What do you mean 'why?'!" he did shout this time. "Don't you feel what I do?" he asked calming down a bit and lowering his tone. "I know it sounds crazy, but I think I love you." he said grabbing both her shoulders tightly.

Her hand reached up to cover her mouth. Love? Is this what that strange feeling was? The selfish kind of love that only belonged to two people, the kind of love she had only read about in her books? "It...I...since you appeared, there has been something amiss about what I was feeling, but I didn't know what it was...I have never...loved anyone before, besides my parents. Love...it is something I have been afraid of doing since I became what I am...but...are you sure that's what it is? That you actually love me?" Leila bit at her lip in thought as the streetlights suddenly flickered out, leaving them in almost completely darkness. Moonlight filtered through the dark clouds, leaving everything below covered in a mysterious blue tone.

"I've been sure of a grand total of two things in my life. One: That I'm stuck on Earth at least for the time being, and Two: That's probably the best thing that happened to me, because I met you." he said relaxing his arms and releasing her shoulders.

A warm sensation ran down Leila's face as she grabbed one his hands with her free one. It felt good, holding his hand like that, comforting and warm. A smile spread across her face beneath her hand, causing her eyes to look happier as well. There was something in his words, though, that left her with a little bit of doubt.
"And if you find some way back...you will....?"

"-Have to make a really difficult decision..." he said finishing her sentence. Haucon smiled at the one mirrored on her face. "Whether to go back, or stay here with you, or take you with me...if you'd go." he added.

At least he doesn't plan to abandon me altogether... Leila moved her hand from her mouth and took his other hand in hers, making her blush more again. She thought again about the stories she had read. "Does loving me...mean you want to kiss me?"

Haucon was tempted to give her a non-verbal answer to her question, but caught himself just in time. He recollected himself. "No. I've never wanted to kiss you." he said sarcastically. "But isn't it...er...dangerous, I mean, what with who you are..." he trailed off.

"It is true that that might lead to...unmentionable things happening, but despite what I am, I have never kissed another living soul before. However, I am willing to wait, if you are still uneasy about what will happen. 'Taking it slow' is what I think they call it." She smiled even broader before continuing. "But I think it is safe to say that since we seemed to have the same feeling that I must love you too..." She closed her eyes when she said it, feeling somewhat embarrassed.

Haucon smiled and pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her waist. He rubbed his face against her neck, like a big cat, before kissing her cheek very gently. Her skin was hot from her blush and it almost made him laugh. He pulled back a bit. "C'mon we should get back to the others, they're probably a little worried. And besides, I don't know how long Dream can keep Violet from killing that angel..."

Leila covered her mouth to stifle her laughter but failed. This was the probably the happiest she had ever been since she died. The streetlights flickered back on as they made their way back to the beach. Her supposed heart was racing, her mind filled with the elation of an adrenaline rush. The spot where he had kissed her tingled a bit, but it had no adverse reaction on her psyche.
"Do you think Violet will dislike me for this...?"

"Huh?" Haucon said taking her hand and starting to lead the way out of the maze of alleyways. "Why would Violet care?" he asked giving her a questioning look.

"I...don't know. She seemed to be quite friendly with me, being a demon and all. She might look down on me for..." she didn't finish her sentence, not wanting to say any offending word against him. Instead she changed the subject. "I'm sure Dream can handle her just fine. She seems not have any qualms with him, really."

Haucon caught her subject change. "Look down on you for what?" he said pulling up short and cutting her last sentence off. ((Sorry it's so short...))

Leila shook her head. "She doesn't seem to like non-demon kind very much, from what I can tell. Like when she grabbed you..." her voice trailed off a bit, remembering how afraid she had been for his safety.

Haucon started walking again. "You ever hear the saying 'those who care don't matter, and those that matter don't care'?" he asked. "This isn't about Violet, and what she thinks, this is about you and me, right?" he asked. "Don't worry about it, and besides I'm not hurt, but I am going to get her back for that somehow..." he added more to himself.
