Episode 29: Fire, fire, raging fire

Naraku had closed her eyes. Sweat pearls slowly dripped over her forehead. She sat on the ground, with her legs crossed, in front of a few twigs.
The twigs were just normal twigs you could find anywhere. Brown, long and thin, and a bit bumpy. Just ordinary twigs. And, as expected of normal twigs... they didn't move.
But what was Naraku doing? She sat there, in front of those twigs. She had to be doing SOMETHING! The warm wind softly played with her short hair. Silence was all around her.
Wait... were those twigs moving?
No... it was the wind.
Wait a minute... yes! Yes, something did change! Those twigs... they started to fume! A small line of smoke erupted from them, all of a sudden!! The smoke became thicker and thicker, until it was half a centimetre thick.
Then something else got added. Awe... a cute little small flame! How adorable! A small flame danced over the twigs, showing itself proudly to the world.

Naraku gasped for air, opened her eyes and flew backwards. Exhausted she panted heavily, being more tired than ever.
Ao bend over her. "Well done." He smiled.
Naraku looked at him, lying on the ground. "Why?" She asked between 2 breaths. "Why I make fire? Matsuru and Blade can do much faster!"
Ao smiled and helped her up. "Naraku, this wasn't about creating fire. This exercise was summoning your power when YOU want it."
Mayonaka kneeled down at the very tiny fire that almost died out. She quickly added some leaves and other twigs. "Well, it's not that big of a fire."
Matsuru walked proudly at Naraku. "Size doesn't matter. What matters is that Naraku created that fire with her will!"
"But Matsuru can create fire faster." Naraku pouted. "Takes me years!"
"Only 15 minutes." Blade patted her on the back. "You'll learn! From now on you'll create each fire until you get the hang of it."
Ao agreed. "But I also think it's not necessary to let her create all fires. Some rest is nice too, once in a while."
Sushi bit through a string. "Well, whatever you say." She mumbled and stood up. "There, finally done." She walked at Naraku. "Look Naraku, I made you a jacket!"
Naraku looked at the jacket. All of a sudden she grabbed it and hugged it! "Mm! Jacket!" She exclaimed. "Nice, soft, warm jacket! I like colours too!!" But then she became silent. "What is a 'jacket'?"
All laughed and Sushi took the jacket from Naraku. She held it open and helped Naraku in. "A jacket is something you wear over your clothes. It keeps you warm."
Naraku observed herself as far as she could until Mayonaka dug a mirror from her bag. Then Naraku hung all over the mirror. "I look pretty!" She smiled and twirled around. "Look Matsuru, I have a jacket!"
Matsuru smiled. "Yes, indeed. I see it." He took her shoulders. "And it will keep you warm as well."
"Warm...." Naraku let the word slip through her mind. "Warm...."
"Don't you know what warm is?" Mayonaka asked. Naraku shook her head. "Warm is like the sun and cold is like snow." She explained.
Blade interrupted. "She doesn't know what snow is!"
"How should I know!"
"She does know what snow is." Matsuru remembered the mountain passage. "But she can't learn it like that." Matsuru took her to the fire. He held her hands close to it. "Do you feel that? That is warm." Naraku nodded. Then Matsuru took her to the nearby small spring. He put her hands in the cold water. "And that is cold."
Naraku immediately pulled her hands out of the water. "I do not like cold. Warm is nice!"
Sushi nodded. "Indeed." She said. "I like warm more too. That's why I'm surprised I still go along this wacko journey to the cold. Why don't we turn around and go to the desert or so?"
"NO!" Mayonaka jumped up. All stared at her. "Because... it's too hot there!"
"Hot?" Naraku asked.
Sushi pointed at the fire. "If you get too close to the fire it becomes very, very, very warm."
"And that hurts." Naraku said. "So when warm hurts, it is hot?"
Matsuru nodded. "You are so smart. Well, the sun will set soon, how about turning in for a night early?"
Blade sat down as well. He yawned. "Sure!" He agreed. "I'm so tired."
"I'll take the first watch." Ao offered and sat down on a rock. "Everybody okay with the idea leaving early?"
All nodded and lay down while Ao stayed awake. From the corner of his eyes he saw Naraku crawling up against Matsuru. A smile appeared on his face.
All of a sudden he heard a lot of noise. He snapped around and saw Mayonaka with her fingers in her ears. "Sushi, shut up!" Mayonaka growled, but Sushi was already fast asleep...

Night fell and everything was peaceful in camp. The horses calmly rest and the fire made some soft cracking sounds. Sushi's snoring had died down and Ao had trouble keeping his eyes open. He released a big yawn and stood up to throw some more wood on the fire.
All of a sudden a soft wizz filled the air. Ao looked up, and the arrow barely missed his long pointy ears. The Elf screamed, jumped back, and woke up everyone by falling all over them.
Blade jumped up, grabbed his sword and was ready for action, followed seconds later by Matsuru.
All looked around, ready for any attack... but it stayed silent. Awfully silent. Sushi and Ao both pointed their enhanced ears, hoping to hear something... but nothing.
Naraku kneeled at the arrow and pulled it out of the ground. She smelled it and anger filled her face. "Hunter." She growled.
Matsuru lowered his sword. "It's from the Hunter?" He asked. Naraku nodded. "Mm..."
"What?" Mayonaka asked. "Why did you 'mm'?"
Matsuru took the arrow. "It's a game." He answered. "For him at least. And a trick."
Blade lowered his sword as well. "This is his way of saying: 'watch out, I'm here... always'."
"It's his way of freaking us out." Matsuru concluded.
"Well it's working!" Sushi clinched to an annoyed Mayonaka. "What if he actually hits something!"
"That is not his goal." Naraku said. "I am what Hunter wants. Hunter wants you scared. So you will leave."
"Ha!" Sushi said from behind of Mayonaka. "Then he won't succeed! I'm never scared!"
"Then why are you behind me?" Mayonaka sighed.
Sushi was silent.... "Because there was a bug on your back." She smacked Mayonaka on the back. "There, it's dead now."
"No," Mayonaka growled. "YOU are the dead insect!" Mayonaka jumped on Sushi and grabbed her ears, pulling it.
"Ow, ow!" Sushi yelled. "Not the ears! Not the ears!"
"Why?" Mayonaka yelled. "You never use them anyway!"
All the boys sighed. "Girls, will you finally knock it off? Girls!"
Naraku observed the fighting friends. It was strange to her, seeing them pulling on each other and sometimes releasing a smile as well!!
All of a sudden a new feeling entered her soul. Naraku turned around, looking into the black night. At first wonder was written all over her face, while she still heard the boys and girls behind her.
But they died out.
The sounds slowly vanished and she focused on what she was trying to hear. A foot crushing leaves. And then an angry face replaced her wondering face. A growl escaped her mouth.
Naraku raised her arms, turned around and yelled. "FIRE!" Her voice, high and strong, screaming like an eagle, and her powers, obeying her command.
A ray of fire, surging through the night, headed like a falcon diving to its prey through the night. The power was immense; the speed was incredible. And... it was gone just as fast as it came.
Naraku stared into the night, until her face softened up. Then she turned back, seeing her friends staring at her.
"Hunter gone now." She said innocently.
Ao stared at her. "And she needs help with commanding her powers?!" He exclaimed. "She... she..."
"She can only call upon her powers when she's having a big emotion." Matsuru whispered. "Fear... or Anger..."
"Mix them both and you get Super Naraku." Sushi joked but Mayonaka repaid that joke by giving Sushi a close encounter with her hand.
Blade looked around. "Well... I think Naraku will be right. And that The Hunter will be gone for tonight."
"Are you certain?" Mayonaka asked worried.
Blade nodded. "But just in case, I'll take the next watch."
Ao stretched himself. "Good! I was almost falling asleep! G'night everyone!" He fell down on the ground.


Way back the smell of scorching skin filled the air. The Hunter felt his skin. His arm, all the way up to his face... he barely made it away from the ray of fire. And even though he was in pain... he smiled.
"Young little prey..." He smiled. "Not even the raging fire will keep me away from you." He pushed away his burned hair. "As a hunter... you should know that."

Maar op het moment zit ik een beetje vast in boek 3 XD
