While the reaction was extremely amusing, and absolutely no less than he expected, Kurama suppressed the smile that nagged his soft lips, and only a spark in his green eyes hinted at what he thought of the situation. Hiei was angry enough at this point. The fox had intended only to tease him, not startle him to such an extent that he choked. The expression was very well rehearsed and meant little—in this situation and at this place. And honestly, Kurama thought it odd that such a look could affect him so severely.
The kitsune reacted calmly as the other vented, though he did pay attention to the mouth that drank, was brushed, and finally spoke again.
Hiei's threat prompted him to mildly tease, and so the red-head's matter-of-fact response was this: "I fail to see why you would cut hair you find so pretty... and also why you reacted to dramatically in the first place."

"Meat, of course, must be the main dish, to be followed shortly after by-" Night cut Jacque off and told him that she couldn't cook for them, or they wouldn't eat. Jacque gave her an exasperated glare. "Night, how in all the worlds do you plan on having this dinner if you are not going to cook?"
Night shrugged. "I just come up with the plan, I don't figure out how to work it," She pointed at him. "That's your job."
Jacque rolled his eyes. "You're useless. I don't know why Kasai keeps you around."
"I love you too, Albino. Now let's focus on the dinner..."

Hiei narrowed his eyes, and from the angle he was sitting at, that made his eyes look rather beautiful. He clenched his jaw, as if he were going to clam up, but unclenched it and let out an irritated sigh.
"Hn," he began. "Maybe I'm like Karasu and cutting your hair will make me shudder with pleasure."
That might've been a low-blow but Hiei was Hiei, so these responses did happen. He traced his fingertips along the edge of the table and didn't even blind when a rather large splinter came off into his index finger. He glared at it childishly before speaking again.
"Why I reacted so dramatically? Unlike your previous... companions, I do not want to stem the rose with you. If you want someone to fool around with, I suggest you go to that Makai whorehouse Koenma sent us to last year."

"Does the thought disgust you so deeply, or are you taking this too seriously? Neither warrant you to speak of Karasu," the kitsune said, signaling the end of the little game. Any mention of the crow left a bad taste.... Did the Koorime really want him to bring in what bothered him most?
Kurama felt he had to address his second point, as well. His answer flowed of its own accord, not held back by better judgment, and once be had begun, he dared not look the Koorime in the eyes.
"My human mother has taught me better than that, Hiei... she taught Youko Kurama the concept of love, and how that must go into such an action. You aren't offering that, so you have no need to worry."

Hiei kept his expression neutral, burning off any fragment of guilt that managed to break through. He finished the plate and pushed it away, sighing irritably. He wasn't exactly angry with Kurama, but he had grown rather mentally fatigued from talking so much. So he stood up, gave Kurama a look that asked if he were coming along or not, and left the dining area into the corridor.
He found himself glaring at the designs crawling on the walls, and quite seriously considered lighting the hall on fire. Instead he burned a rose sitting innocently in a vase on a small table.

Taking the other's lead, Kurama stood before making his way into the hallway. He lagged several yards behind, too deep in though to pay sufficient attention to things around him. The throughly indifferent look was engraved in his mind... the Koorime knew what his words implied, even though the kitsune had been careful not to directly speak his feelings. Hiei had always been the one who could read him best.
And when Kurama did look at the other, he saw him burning the rose, causing the fox's eyes to widen. The flower had always represented the red-head... had Hiei truly meant what that implied? If he had, the fox would definitely regret those few sentences that had slipped through his lips.
He almost wished the fire demon had said something, just to be given a straight answer, rather than be left wondering. It would be better to know what he might have to eventually deal with.

Night took this opportunity to grab the fox by the arm. Abruptly she pulled him into a shadowy corridor branching off of the hall.
"Don't kill me!" was the first thing she said, the second was "I need your help with something."
Night looked around suspiciously. "Look, I know you probably want me dead," Short pause. "Among other things, but I can't do this without your cooperation. I need you to cook dinner. Whenever I cook, you don't eat. So... yeah..." Night braced herself for whatever sharp reply Kurama would dish out.

"Naturally, I wouldn't let Hiei miss any more meals," replied Kurama simply, telling her both that he planned to cook dinner, and would've done so anyway. His words were spoken in a monotone sort of way, and the fox bore a blank expression, hinting—only slightly hinting—at how badly the earlier events had hurt him.
Then he turned to leave, took a few steps, and stopped for only a moment to, without glancing at Night, say, "Tell me, why did you feel the need to ask me this?"

"Uh... because you looked like you hated me... and I don't want the only newcomers in," She checked her watch and feigned surprise. "A really long time to hate me."
She leaned against the wall. "I hope I did nothing to... upset the two of you too bad." Night smiled gently, purely childlike. "I hope you guys can get back to good terms, before he burns anything else. But the rose will grow back, just as beautiful." She walked off to find Jacque and inform him of the progress.
"Be sure to cook something nice," She called over her shoulder with a wave.

The kitsune did not return the pleasant gesture, but... oddly, he was slightly comforted by her words. The rose, to him, related somewhat to the relationship the Koorime and himself shared... and after this, that relationship could become just as strong again.
Kurama walked briskly down the corridor, sparing a guess as to where the other may have disappeared to, and hoping not to take too long to locate him.
And when he came to the burnt rose, the red-head paused, held his hand over the plant, transfered a small portion of his energy into it, and a soft upward curve—not quite a smile—came to his lips when it looked healthier and much more lovely than it had been prior.

Hiei wasn't far off. He was actually frozen on one of the spiral staircases. Frozen, with his eyes blank and Jagan uncovered, staring and glowing. His energy had spiked a bit, just for this use and his mind was filled with places and people.
He saw the ferry girl with a small, teal-haired infant in her arms. The child was crying and the other was frantic, trying to calm her down and stop the jewels from clattering everywhere. The detective's teacher rolled her eyes and took the child, who immediately calmed. Botan sighed and Genkai told her to get the hell out of her house.
The Koorime's ki went down again and his eyes regained color, the Jagan's glow fading as he covered it gingerly. He didn't continue up just yet, but stood thinking.

Kurama was glad to not need to search for the Koorime or walk too far, and approached him with stealth and silence attainable only by Youko; anyone but the fire demon would've guessed he had been there, in that same spot, the entire time.
He instantly recognized that he was looking after Yukina, and the fox knew better than to ask him about his mother... Hiei wouldn't see how the human woman was of enough importance.
"How is she?" the fox asked finally, referring to his sister, hoping to avoid any talk of earlier events. It would be... awkward to speak about it, especially if the other was curious enough to ask questions—not that Kurama actually thought he cared enough.

Hiei's answer was delayed and he merely turned his head to look at Kurama. Just look. Then he closed his eyes and turned his head forward again. "Your mother is fine," he said shortly, almost in a guilty way. He continued up the stairs, his light feet hardly making noise. He stopped again, hand on the railing.
"Are you coming up or not?"

The red-head silently answered the question by following the fire demon, and he stopped for only a moment to wait for Hiei to continue up the stairs, not really wanting to stumble over him.
Kurama had been... somewhat surprised to hear about his mother, having been asking about Yukina, but was very glad that Shiori was doing well.

Night sucked in a deep breath, and Jacque covered his ears.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!" She yelled down the halls. Since the halls were stone, her voice amplified and traveled. Oh yeah, she was good...
Night gasped in some air. "Now that that's done," She turned back to Jacque, "Foxy is making dinner. We just have to set up now. Let's go!"
(Just wanted to give you all the seasonal greating.)
