Kilowo robotnerd Kilowo Wow....lots of bassoons... I can't help always playing forte xD Be loud, be proud. Though, not too loud. We don't want to make our band sound bad. Hehe, This is probably going to be against the rules again ( had a thread locked with this question due to repetition of the question ) ... I'm starting Bassoon, and my Band Director has no clue about how to play it... so I'm clueless, any hints, websites, books? Anything?

Best you can do is try to find a local teacher. check any instrument stores in your area, they usually have stuff posted.
If not the Elemental Methods, i think it's call, is the standard beginer's lesson book (at least everywhere I've seen). Pick up a copy and some med-soft or medium reeds (Soft doesn't work for anyone unless they have absolutely NO muscle in their lips.)

Hah, Thanks... If I have stronger Facial Muscles ( 5 years of Alto/Soprano/Bari Sax ) Should I get a harder reed... or is Medium-soft just kind of the standard?

Any of you ever play English Folk Song Suite? I THINK it's by Vaughan Williams, but I don't have my music on me, so I can't check. Dude, there's this whole long oboe solo in the second movement, and I really want to play it^-^
But yeah.. @Kerokid, my oboe (even though it's not bassoon, but I would think the basics apply) teacher says that having a hard reed gives you awesome tone, but it's better to have a softer reed so it's easier to play. XP Medium-soft IS pretty soft though, so I would recommend you get at least a Medium-hard.
=o We have a ton of oboes at our school.. I bet we have more than anyone else XP

My band teacher is taking advantage of the fact that our wind ensamble (our school's highest band) has the only two upper-classmen bassoons. (me and a senior). He gives out music that has special things for bassoons. Many of you may think thats a blessing...but Im not that confident of my abilities.... Im second chair and I get all the low parts which are hard for me to get out on the bassoon the school gave me.

I think oboe's are beautiful. That is, if you know what you're doing of course. I just started oboe lessons yesterday. I've played the clarinet for 7 years but always wanted to learn the oboe. :]

Okay, so I got a chance to play a solo in Wind Ensemble.
Movement for Rosa's a b***h! I mean, do we really need to change time signature every other measure?
Anyways, I got a chance to play that funky duet thing in the beginning- its got a flute solo, then an alto sax/bassoon duet. I got to play it.
I practiced for weeks. I mean, I had that nitch in the bag. I could play it ten times better than either of the the other two bassoons in the band. I could play it as well as my private instructor!
I completely bombed it, because I'd been ou sick the previous two days, and you when you sick, that you need a day or so to get your support back in order? Wel, my BD said, someone play it. My older sister (who plays first chair bass clarinet, doesn't go on Gaia, and sits right next to me), and the dude that sits next to me look at me, and tell me that I am playing it. This thing is high, and annoying, and I couldn't support it. Am I a loser, or what?

I love my bassoon, it's name is Beatrice. I know it's lame, but I love it. The only thing is, since I play piano, they put me in pit for marching, which sucks beyond all beleif. The good news is a beat a senior for section leader and I'm a sophmore. Boy was he pissed because he actually plays percussion. sweatdrop

Double-tonging on the bassoon...Pain in the a**! Especially since my BD keeps saying 'top of the tip of the tongue on the tip of the reed.' Sorry, Sevie, kinda hard t'do that with a BASSOON. When you use the top of the tip of the tongue on the tip of the reed, on single-reeds, you are thrusting the reed against the mouthpiece, thus creating stop-motion sound. Can't do that with a bassoon! Anyone got any tips to help me get through it easier?

Hello! I was just accepted...
My name is Emily, and I am twelve, soon to be thirteen, and I am in 7th grade.
I've been in the school band, playing oboe, since 5th grade, the earliest grade allowed into the Elementary band.
I've never marched, but I will for the Fourth of July parade my town has each year if we get enough interest.
I play the flute, kind of, since my mom has her own and has been playing flute and oboe since she was my age. I am always trying to improve, and I like being something as unique as the oboe! I am the only oboe in the Middle and High School here, and I am the only oboe in the All County (regional) band here in New York.
