Heh. I'm one of nine horn players in our marching band. We have yet to split into or sub-group thingiemajiggers, but then I'll be one of four or five, depending on if the new girl is in symphonic or if she's going to be the only actual horn player in the concert band. The concert band horn section was comprised wholly of trumpet players switched to horn for the sake of instrumentation last year. We have a ninth grade band, a concert band, and a symphonic band (in order from least to greatest.) Our entire section has to play mellophone for marching season, and it's a nightmare! Half of the horn players don't even bother learning the real mellophone fingerings and end up using alternate ones that make the pitch even SHARPER than what is normal for the accursed thing. Man, I love marching season for the fun of being outside and performing physically and all, but boy do I hate that stupid, stupid mellophone. Sometimes I wish I could just run it over with an 18-wheeler. That, my friends, is the true meaning of satisfaction. 3nodding

yes! F Horns RULE!

^ a mellophone is the marching version of the Horn. And i already destroyed mine BEFORE marching season ended. I was walking down the wet steps of the bleachers at a football game and...well, it wasn't pretty. Let's just say that the instrument was never the same again.

Anyway, I'm the only Horn at my school and have been for three years, which is sad because in my middle school beginning band there were 13 of us (though only four were any good, including myself, and no, I'm not bragging. I wouldn't have kept playing if I was bad). It's kinda cool though, because when I had to take sick leave for a month, everyone in the band was sending me cards with messages like "we miss our French Horn!" and "Come back soon! The saxophones suck at playing your cues!" Made me feel very loved.

All i've got left to say is that I'm proud to be "One of those weird french horn/mellophone players who wander the outer reaches of the marching band formations"

Ooh I saw an Army brass doing a "hose-ophone" but there was only one (the horn player) who was able to play it.

I've been playing horn ever since 6th grade! heart I'm the only one in my school's Wind Ensemble. What brand horn do you prefer? I played an Olds in middle school, and I liked it better than the Yamaha I have now.

I have a Yamaha which I like and it's better than my ancient school horn. I can't remember the brand name, but it was a pretty uncommen brand that begun with A.

I like the sound of Vienna horns. They are really light to play as well. And I prefer the keys.


Yesterday, in my lesson, valve oil started coming out the bell. Water never gets to go out the bell, no matter valve oil. How bad is that?
Theres the possibility I may have put too much valve oil into it but I did play a few times without putting any more in before this happened.

lol, seriously, at our banquet last year, we were Best Section for Concert season. Wee, I love the horns! We've had 6 in our section last year and this year. I'll be assistant section leader next year, for sure.
