Arin spoke with Querrellous for some time, after viewing the conclusion of the initiation. It was a pretty textbook welcoming to the Tenkuu; Utter annihilation. She and the White Sage spoke at length about something that they seemed almost frightened to acknowledge. Something they had hoped wouldn't happen for a very long time. In the relatively short time that the Chosen had stayed with the M'Erians, she had picked up a great wealth of lore concerning the subterrainian people. Among the sea of knowledge was the story of the Great Fall of the people. The time when they went from being the most wide-spread and mostly simple species on the surface of the planet, eking out a living without ruffling too many feathers, to being the most endangered species, scratching out a living in the bowels of the earth, fighting tooth and nail for survival, becoming the most powerful creatures on the planet, though lowest in number.

It had all begun with a single birth. A small, green child had been born to an average family. Their only child was the only green M'Erian to be born in remembered history, and it was taken as a sign that he was the chosen one. Along that sign, there was another mark. The child was missing one of his tentacles. Instead of the regular thirteen tentacles that emerge form the head of an M'Erian, this child bore only twelve. These two sings were met with great joy, as the M'Erian prophecies stated that such a chosen child, carrying marks of its obvious difference to the People, one in green, would be the one to carry them from the darkness they lived in, cowering from the Terre on land and the Feyre in the waves. The Sages took the child and raised him in their ways, instructing him of the proper rites and rituals he should be prepared to perform, and the incantations and spells he must master. He excelled in all fields, far surpassing his teachers in a few short years. Only some of the most powerful warriors of the race, most notably only a handfull of the Thirteen were more powerful than he.

Somehow, though, when everything was as it should be, and everything was going to be perfect, the boy, who had always behaved oddly, rashly, and somewhat more maliciously than he might have been requested, snapped. Nerrellous began with the temple. From within, he blasted it into oblivion, incinerating everyone inside, and erasing much of the history of the M'Erian race and their culture. From there, he went on an unstoppable rampage, obliterating most of the People in less than a day. The Thirteen attempted to hold him off, to calm him down, and later, to destroy him, but none could succeed. In his anger, and in his depravity, he had begun to steal the power of those he slayed. He slaughtered the M'Erian people, and grew more powerful than any of the Thirteen could stand against. Finally, they were forced to retreat, as Nerrellous continued his wanton destruction of the planet.

They didn't know why Nerrellous had become this abomination, but they were resolved to do the one thing that they knew was their last hope of defeating him. Deep within the core of the planet, the mighty phoenix that sustained M-13 resided, keeping the planet alive in return for the planet protecting the phoenix. The immensely powerful creature was sealed away in a barrier deep within a network of tunnels the M'Erians had created that spanned the whole planet. They set off immediately to the barrier, traveling nearly to the core of the planet. Once there, the Thirteen prepared the ritual, each lending their energy to the incantation. The youngest was selected as the conduit. Querrellous ME, one of the most powerful of the Thirteen, and the youngest, was tasked with receiving all the power, wisdom, and knowledge of the other twelve, and focusing it into a single power, to simultaneously break the seal and communicate the wish of the M'Erian people. As the lives of the others disappeared, Querrellous channeled all that remained of them into the barrier, breaking it. The surge of consciousnesses that passed through the boy, though, was too much, and he could only form a wish that amounted to 'The green is destroying our people, and your planet. Please help.' A mighty quake shook the world, and a fiery song split the ears of all the beings on the planet. As the phoenix rose from the waves, the oceans boiled, enshrouding the world in clouds of black thunderstorms that would drive the species underground to escape the ravages of the elements, and continue for decades. As the flames opened on the horizon, All beings on the planet stared. Querrellous stood in terrified awe of the power that had been unleashed at the cost of his twelve best friends' lives.

A brilliant, beautiful note rippled the earth, and in an instant, every green thing on the planet was frozen. Trapped inside a black orb, perfectly spherical. With a mighty, elegant flap of its wings, the phoenix propelled them all into space, where they were captured in orbit around the planet, from where they were never to return. The phoenix returned silently to the depths of the planet, and the surface of the world was plunged into a cleansing thirty years of violent storming that eradicated all the weakest lifeforms, and drove the few remaining M'Erians underground.

Nothing could erase that from the racial memories of the M'Erians... Nor would Querrellous --and now Arin-- forget the rest of the prophecy... Pertaining to Nerrellous and the dark, horrible planet he had taken residence on. The abyssal place where he had learned to harness the darkest of arts.

"I do wonder, though, if this has something to do with Tyrrannian's disappearance. If you recall, he was the one with whom Zyke had battled when you first came here. I find it no small coincidence..."

"What are you saying!?" Arin turned the full strength of her gaze on Querrellous, appalled at what the Elder may be insinuating.

"I'm simply saying that you should be cautious... There are times when we are blind to what is closest to us, so much that it need only stand in the open to conceal itself."

"My eyes are open, Querrellous." Arin sighed and reigned her anger in. "I don't believe... I can't... I won't believe that... It must be a mistake. There must be something else at work here. I... I won't let it be true..."

"Yes... It may be a mistake... But don't count on that, child... Now, you must be on your way."

"Yes. I will return. But I must take care of those under my protection. We are safe until Then, anyway." Without another word, Arin began walking toward ALICE, and she felt Querrellous vanish from behind her. She paced deliberately onto the ship, her eyes cast downward, her face eerily devoid of expression. As she paced, she found herself in front of her rack of weighted clothing once more. She began selecting a new, much heavier wardrobe, and wandered to her room. "Once everyone is aboard, ALICE, we're returning to Nexum." She needed to consult the Wise Ones... She must know if there was a way to recover Rota.

Arin began slipping out of her charred clothing. Identical to her old outfit, the new clothes were immensely heavier. The cloth was little changed; it wouldn't do to be stripping naked in a fight, regardless of the benefits , but all the fittings such as the belt and the harness felt as though they were hiding depleted uranium in their innards. The new cloak was the heaviest of all, being half the new load. Altogether, the weights equated to 250 Earth-pounds, when she had only been wearing 50 before. That means that her clothes now weighed two-and-one-half times as much as she did.

As she settled into the new ensemble (minus the cloak), she rolled her neck and began to let her body accustom itself to the weight as she paced the floor of her room, pondering the Tenkuu's collective situation.

Arin hardly noticed the weights. Foot in front of foot, step after step, she continued to pace the confines of the room she'd once shared with Aki. As she recalled that fact, a pang struck her heart. It wasn't unbearable, anymore, though... Arin had faced and conquered that demon as best she could. After she had been broken by Nerrellous' ritual, Arin had basically rebooted. Aki was still a fond memory, but she was only a memory. She was unavoidably gone, but forever part of Arin. Because Arin knew this, she was able to accept that she could go on, and life would still be livable.

Selena looks out at the starry sky, wishing she knew exactly how Rota was doing with his training from Ryuko. He had contacted her and the Tenkuu once already, but that wasn't a good marker. At any rate, she knew that he was training, and that Ryuko was a good teacher, so she had that solace. She looked at Lite, happily sleeping in a tree. She smiled, and heard the whirring of Alice's machinery getting the ship ready for lift-off. kicked the tree a bit, enough to shake it and wake up her weary son.

Lite woke slowly, as his eyes flitted open. "hrm...5 more minutes."

Selena sighed Like Father like Son. She looked back up the tree, and called to Lite. "Alice is getting ready to lift off, so if you wait 5 minutes, you're gonna be stuck here!"

Lite was up like a shot and stared down with disbelief at Selena. "What?! Auntie Arin wouldn't do that!"

Selena smirked "I wouldn't count on it."

Lite leaped off the branch he was on, and flew inside without a second thought"Aunie Arin! don't leave me!"

Selena chuckled, and walked at a healthy saunter inside Alice. She paused at the doorway, and turned around. she gazed out at the landscape of the planet one last time, taking ever bush, blade of grass, and even the trees(even after all they did to her) in, committing it to memory. "Good Bye, M13." she walked into the doorway, and didn't look back.
