Donovan nodded he didn't really think Miyu could stay for more than a few more weeks, but he knew she would try her best.

"I figured as much but I'm sure she would like to see if there is anything she had do for a bit longer."

Otherwise there was nothing he or anyone else could do. It would just take a lot of time, time which fortunately the people here had.

Haradhel nodded. "I think though," she said, glancing at Shiara, "that what she needs now is rest. Ahren, will you take her to Arwen's old room? Help her get settled in?"

Ahren nodded and held out his hand to Shiara. "Come," he smiled gently at her. "We have a room and a bed for you, I'm sure you must be exhausted after all that travel."

Shiara looked down at Ahren's hand, and after a moment's hesitation she reached out and placed her hand in his. "Thank you," she said quietly. And then she followed Ahren out of the playroom.

There was something sweet about that, not that Donovan would admit it. He looked back down at the twins, a lot of changes were probably going to happen to Haven now.

"Well... now that's settled," Donovan murmured.

At least Shael was not broken Donovan thought to himself quietly, probably a bit too brainwashed at the time she first arrived but not broken, not like that.

"What do you think?" Donovan asked.

He meant of Shiara of course, Haradhel might have a better idea of how bad it was, though he sort of wished Yukito was here.

Haradhel hesitated a moment, and a cloud passed over her face.

"I don't know," she said softly. "I have to admit, it's going to be a long time before she can heal ... emotionally, I mean. She doesn't even trust me, and shes terrified of everyone ... she seems to have accepted Ahren in some ways, though that may be because he was the one to have broken her out of the fortress. Still ..."

She lowered her eyes, thinking back to the bath she had helped Shiara to take.

"I've never heard of anyone being as badly treated as Shiara," she murmured sadly, "or seen anyone nearly as scarred. You know what Halmir looks like ... his face is so scarred that he frightens most people the first time they meet him. He's grotesque. And yet ... even that is nothing compared to the scars that cover Shiara's body. It's almost as if ... as if they had been deliberately trying not to leave any scars that showed around her clothes. As if they were trying to keep her outward appearance whole, for some reason. I can't even begin to imagine why."

She looked up at Donovan again.

"But even that is nothing in comparison to the damage to her spirit, to her soul. She is a shell of a being, afraid of everyone, male or female, dwarf, human, or elf-kind. Ahren said that she was trapped there ten years ... and she is still so young ... can she even remember what it is to feel kindness at the hands of another? She does not accept it now. She is afraid of kindness, just as she is afraid of abuse. In all honesty, I don't know what Ahren did to get her to accept him ... my only hope is that he can continue to help her so that someday she might be able to live a normal life."

Donovan hoped it wouldn't have any lasting effects but then again he didn't know, he was only banking on her now many many years of living she would eventually heal.

"Weird... something has changed there since the last time I was there," Donovan murmured.

It sort of made him want to take a visit up there but there was no way he could get up there without sneaking (which at the moment was out of the question). Especially not since his last trip involved the death of several highly placed dwarfs.

"It'll take time," Donovan agreed, "But at least I'm sure she'll be able to heal a bit, it might not be until a long while from now, but it'll happen. If she can accept Ahren then there is hope."

Just a bit of hope and a bit of faith that everything would turn out well he thought as he looked down at the two babies who were playing (tumbling) with each other.

Haradhel couldn't help but laugh at that. "You make it sound as if Ahren is some kind of monster," she smiled at Donovan, "someone who is difficult to accept. But I now what you mean. The fact that there is someone who doesn't utterly terrify her is a good sign. And I know that there is much that we can do for her here."

There were many people here who could help, whether the aid was physical, medical, or emotional.

"I wonder if it wouldn't be good for her to meet Shael," she mused aloud.

"Shael is, probably the closest person in terms of experience," Donovan replied softly, "Though, whatever her most traumatizing experience was, and she did have one. She forgot along with her past before being a slave."

True Shael managed to uncover that but as far as he knew all her knowledge was second hand, Shael herself still had no memories of her own specifically of her time before being a slave.

"But she is still probably the only person who can kind of relate."

Haradhel nodded. "That's what I mean," she murmured softly. "By speaking with Shael, perhaps Shiara can learn that it is possible to overcome her past, and have a life of her own where she can be happy."

She smiled faintly. "Still, even for Shael it took a long time. Perhaps the fact that she could get over it at all is due to the fact that she never knew the worst that had been done to her. Shiara does not have that advantage. She knows all of it, and I doubt if she will ever forget it."

"Well see if maybe the two would like to meet, and see what happens," Donovan replied, "And take it from there."

Maybe introduce her to Saki since Donovan wasn't quite sure how an animal that could talk would seem to someone like Shiara but maybe being an animal Saki would have an advantage.

"I'll try to make it back again sooner to see how things are going."

Haradhel nodded. "That will be fine. We'll make sure to have everything documented for you, just in case. After all, we never know who's going to be here when you come, or who will be able to tell you what's all been going on."

She rubbed her hands together. "I'll go find Elrohir and bring him back here, I'm not sure if he knows Ahren is back yet." She turned and left the playroom.

When it was time to herd the children back inside and out of the cold, Toshiro was the one to do so with Saki's help. When the children were busy playing together, Saki wandered off to do her daily patrol. She was a cat after all, and like all cats she had to make sure all her territory was as it should be. She marched past the rooms, sniffing at the children's beds for sniffing could tell her a lot. She marched pass Elrohir and Haradhel's bed room, no one was in there, though she was sure she smelled the fresh scent of Ahren, he must have returned she thought as she marched pass the place that was Arwen's room and paused.

There was someone in Arwen's room, and it wasn't Arwen. Besides Arwen was no longer living here which disappointed Saki greatly. Nudging the door open with her nose she peeked in to see someone there.

"Mew?"

Ahren was sitting in a corner in Arwen's old bedroom, which seemed as though it might become Shiara's room, sitting in a chair and watching over her. He smiled at Saki and motioned for her to come in. Why not? It was after all her job to meet the new rescuees and try to make them feel better.

Shiara was asleep, curled up under the blanket, one hand clenched tightly around a handful of it, and her expression was anxious, despite her sleeping state. It was clear that she was only sleeping lightly, even though she was so exhausted by her ordeal as well as the journey.

Saki pattered in looking up at the newest arrival, she was much older than a lot of the children she got to see, but it was still clear she was like any other child. Well except Saki thought she didn't seem all that well.

Circling the bed for a moment to try and get a good angle, Saki leaped onto the end of the bed trying to land as gently as she could.

Gentle though Saki was, Shiara woke with a start, and she sat up abruptly, holding the blanket tightly to herself. She stared down at Saki, her expression amazed. But for all that she was surprised, there was no fear in her gaze.

"What ... what are you?" she asked in a whisper, though she clearly didn't expect a reply. She looked over to Ahren for an answer, but he simply smiled and nodded back at Saki.

Saki looked up at Shiara with wide eyes before dropping onto the bed and rolling on her back.

"I'm a cute kitty," Saki replied battering the air cutely.

She purred in hoping that maybe she would be pet or at least she wouldn't be too freaked out by a talking kitty.
