Into the Movies

For the wages of sin is death.....(Romans 6:23) NKJV. "You have the right to remain silent," the officer stated as the four were escorted out of the theater. Josh, Bryan, John, and Aaron had just been busted for sneaking into the movies. This definitely was not what the friends had in mind for their night out. It all started just 30 minutes ago...

"This action thriller would definitely be worth the three dollars to rent, but six dollars to see it at the theater? That was ridicules," Josh told his friends. It was time to take action. So, the blueprints were laid out, the strategy planned, and the group of friends started the assault.

Billy was the distraction. He walked up to the ticket puncher dude and asked him for the time. Josh quickly slipped in behind him, while Aaron proceeded to the restroom. Without a moment to lose, John quickly dove to the ground and crawled under the rope. Yes, all in except....ummm Bryan. Oh no, not Bryan. They never did figure out how he was to get it. Back to the drawing boards. Once inside, they set up the rescue squadron. The mission was almost a success except they could never leave a man missing in action. It was time for Operation Saving Private Bryan. Josh took the first try with his novelty of an idea.

"I'll hit him from behind, you grab the rope, lasso him up and hold him for ransom."

Obviously he had seen to many western movies, but it did give Aaron an idea. If he could only get behind him and start gagging on some popcorn. Then Bryan could run inside the theater to get help. Out would pop Josh who would proceed administer the Hymlic maneuver and continue with CPR. It just might work...

Even though this would prove to be one of the funniest nights the group spent together it also turned out to be the costliest. They were caught and not only did they have to pay for the movies they also got a free escort to the police station down town. They received merit badges and an Emmy nomination for best actors. Not to mention a ticket telling them of their new contract deal. Just sign your name at the bottom and pay the 134 dollars.

Even though we tend to do crazy things with our friends, remember that there is a time and place for everything. We set examples by living a Christian life and I'm sure we have all heard of other people who tired or ourselves who tried to sneak into movies. Remember that no matter how small a sin could be it's still a sin. And just one sin will keep us out of the Kingdom that God has prepared for us. So what if you have to wait until the 99th Star Trek to come out on tape. One day we will walk through those pearly gates into the biggest sci-fi film ever. Except this will be one movie that not only comes true, but has the happiest ending of all. If you except Christ as your personal savior you'll be apart of the all-star cast and I'll see you there.

Putting Your Life Together

Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Matt 10:29-31) NKJV.

As I turned the corner of the skate room at work, I gazed up at a pile of old torn apart skates. I had been assigned to repair every skate that was stacked on two shopping carts that stretched to the ceiling. Some had broken axles, some with torn shoe laces. And yet others that just needed a complete and total make over.

Not knowing were to start, I grabbed the one on top. As I sat it down on the counter, I could have cried when I saw all that had to be done just to get this poor little skate back in working order. I started to wonder if it was even worth all the trouble. This skate was trashed. But, I started with the toe stopper and put a new sole and shoe lace on, and it started to look better. Then new wheels and bearings, then a half hour later....the once ragged skate looked shiny and new. I took it for a test spin around the floor, and you could see the proud look on my face from the other end of the rink as I skated back to the front with my new found friend.

Some of you may feel like your in that shopping cart today. Maybe you feel that you have been out of working order with the Lord for to long and there is no way to get back to Him. But, then our Father picks us up and sets us on the counter. He starts to cry as He looks at His pride and joy in pieces. But instead of throwing us away. He starts to work on us. Taking one thing at a time till we get back on the floor again.

Friends, don't ever think that you've gone to far, or that you've become so messed up that even the Lord can't put you back together. If we will just come to Him and ask for help, and forgiveness then He can mold us in His image. By walking beside Him daily, you can start to see Jesus in you, and so will others. If you haven't excepted Jesus, then do it today. Ask Him to come into your heart, and to forgive you for your sins. Maybe today you think that you have back slid to far, you want the peace and the love that only Jesus can give. Well, rededicate your life. Just ask the Lord to forgive you and to make you strong and put your life back together. There isn't a thing that the Lord will not fix if you just let Him.

A Lesson From Coffee

“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have eternal life

John 3:16 (NASB)

Having dinner at my grandparents is always a blast. It’s even so much better when my aunt comes. The best part of course is the desert time. Coffee with whatever deserts my grandparents happens to have. Me, being the youngest and all, I love coffee with cream and a lot of sugar. My aunt and grandmother likes just cream. Grandpa, on the other hand likes his “cup of Joe” totally black. Of course there are little comments between us of the different ways we drink the coffee, but never have we gotten into a huge brawl.

Turn to 1 Corinthians 1:11, 12“For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. Now I mean this, that each of you is saying, “I am of Paul”, and “I am of Appollos”, and “I am of Cephas”, and “I am of Christ.” The people were fighting about the different teachings by the different men of God. All of these men were teaching accurately the life changing Gospel. Yet the church was arguing about who was teaching right, and who was teaching wrong.

What in the world does this have to do with us living at the end of 2003? The word I’m thinking of is denominations. We have so many denominations in the world today. From personal experience, I know that we have an attitude such as the church at Corinth. If we want to life as brothers and sisters in the Lord, we so just got to get over the denomination beliefs.

How does the scriptures and illustration fit together? It doesn’t matter if you put cream and/or sugar in it, or the amount thereof, its still coffee. Hebrews 9 tells us that Christ took His own blood into the holy place, and put it on the mercy seat. God gave his begotten son for the shedding of His blood. That is salvation. There is no other way to the Father but by the Blood of the Lamb. Lets get over our denominational doctrines and come together in the unity of the blood. Lets get over the fighting and remember that the only way to the Father is accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Your So-Called Life

Bible reading: Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40, NLT).

If your life were a television show, what would it be? Friends? Baywatch? The Brady Bunch? Or maybe Third Rock From the Sun?
If your life had a theme song, what would it be titled? Maybe something like “Insensitive?” Or “Jealousy?” Or maybe “The Great Adventure?” How about “I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends?” Or “Nobody Loves Me But My Mother (and She Could Be Jivin’ Too)?”
If your life were a cable TV channel, would it be more like The Disney Channel, MTV, The Sports Channel, The Comedy Channel, or The Boring Documentary Channel?
If your life were made into a cartoon, who would be the most natural choice to play you--Winnie the Pooh? Tweety? Wilma Flintstone? Bullwinkle? Beavis? Butthead? Daffy Duck? Ren? Stimpy? Dot (of the Animaniacs)? Bart Simpson?
It may be fun to come up with answers to those questions, but it’s probably not particularly revealing (although it might be interesting to ask your friends how they would answer those questions about you . . .on second thought, you might not want to do that if you want your friends to stay your friends).
But you know what? If Jesus’ life were a television show, it could have only one title-Love. If His life were to become a hit song, it would be titled, “Love.” In fact, if His life were a tennis game, every point would be Love.
Jesus commanded us to love. He commanded us to love God and to love each other. He said,
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John 13:34, 35).
Jesus commanded love because He valued love. The single greatest characteristic of Jesus’ life, His most important theme, the center of everything He did and said, was love. He left Heaven because of love. He became a man because of love. He went all over the place doing good because of love. He even died--and was resurrected--because of love.
Jesus’ words and life made it clear that love is always right. It is right for all people, for all places, and for all times. It is right, not only because He commands love, and not only because He values love, but ultimately because He is love. Love is a part of His nature and character as God (1 John 4:8b, 16b). When we love others, even our enemies, we are “acting as true children of [our] Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:45a, NLT).

Review: The paragraphs above refer to the three “steps” in discerning right from wrong (precept, principle, Person). Look back over today’s reading and identify those three paragraphs.

Reinforce: The next time you hear a television theme song, remember the theme of Jesus’ life: Love.

Remember: “God is love” (1 John 4:8b, NLT).

Name Change

After Jacob grabbed onto God with everything he had, God changed the Grabber's name to Israel. At that point, things really started happening! Israel (the man) became the father of the 12 tribes of Israel (the country). He also became one of the most significant people in the Old Testament-not on his own strength-but because God fulfilledHis plan in spite of Israel's weaknesses.

The Bible is filled with folks just like Jake-and just like you-ordinary people failing, confused and frustrated who become victorious, confident and strong simply because they finally give God 100 percent. You see, when we give God everything, things start happening! That's when He looks past our humanness and begins to work in supernatural ways to accomplish His will.

God's plan will not be thwarted by your humanity. He supercedes your failure with the power to make wonderful things happen out of mistakes.

There's another name change in the Bible that made history. The apostle Paul wasn't always Paul. He started out as Saul-dedicated to killing as many Christians as he could. But on the road to Damascus, he was confronted by God Almighty. Convinced Jesus Christ actually was whom He claimed to be, Saul gave God 100 percent. God then changed his name to Paul- and things started happening!

He wrote letters to several new churches, and these letters became part of the New Testament. He preached the gospel throughout the Roman empire on three mission trips. He discipled Timothy and was instrumental in helping the Gentiles become Christians. Paul was filled withGod's strength, and because of that, he was never afraid to face confrontation head-on.

God has a beautiful knack for taking our weaknesses and turning them into His strengths. But there's a catch: We have to admit and commit. Once we admit our failure and commit everything to Him, He's able to work through our past and develop His character within us.< p> Are you willing to allow God to make the changes He needs to make in your life? What if He wants to change your name-or how you perceive yourself? He may want to change your reputation-how you're known and perceived by others. Are you willing to allow Him total control?

Know It!
God won't force you to give Him total control. But it's only when you do, that He begins to complete the life- changing work He wants to do in and through you.

Read It!
Genesis 32:28; Acts 9; Philippians 1:21-22.

Pray It!
Jesus, I admit my failure to You. Will you forgive me for ( fill in the blank ). I accept Your forgiveness, and I commit everything I am to You. Have Your way in my life, Lord. Change my life, my actions-even the way I see myself. I want to be putty in Your hands.

Outbreak!

New York City had a tough time between 1804 and 1918. The following epidemics ran rampant during those years:

• Yellow fever (three outbreaks resulting in 445 deaths)

• Typhoid fever (one outbreak equaling 200 deaths)

• Influenza (one outbreak causing 12,562 deaths)

• Smallpox (two outbreaks resulting in 7,044 deaths)

• Cholera (six outbreaks equaling 13,210 deaths)

Imgaine there was an outbreak of Christian teenagers truly being, doing and saying exactly what God directed them to! The news might read something like this:

• Following God to the mission field (52 outbreaks resulting in 15,000 new Christians)

• Witnessing to friends at school (1,000 outbreaks equaling 25,000 spiritual conversions)

• Refusing to participate in drinking, drugs, premarital sex (20,000 outbreaks causing 13,659 nonbelievers to visit church)

• Speaking up in class against evolution, abortion and New Age (638 outbreaks resulting in 9,220 students researching what they believe and why they believe it)

What if . . . just what if you decided to start an outbreak for Christ? Would your class notice the difference? Would your school be the same? Would fellow employees at your part-time job take notice? Would your unsaved family members try to sneak a peek at your Bible?

We can rest assured that your friends, family, fellow employees, city and school would never be the same if you started and consistently participated in an outbreak for Jesus. How could you do such a thing?

Well, you could start a Bible club at your school before or after hours (yes, it's legal!), carry your Bible to school, invite non-churched friends to church and youth group, participate on a missions trip and recruit others to join you, share with those who don't know God the difference He's made and is continuing to make in your life, call 200 people and ask how you can pray for them-no strings attached, initiate a support group to raise money for the persecuted Church.

There are any number of things you can do . . . if you're serious about causing an outbreak for Christ. The best place to start is with your heavenly Father. Ask Him for specific direction. Plead for His guidance. And when He speaks, be willing to obey!

Know It!
You're on a first-name basis with the Lord of Lords. So tell someone! Don't be selfish with Good News; spread it around! Talk it, live it, be it, do it-and things around you will never be the same.

Read It!
Acts 1:8; Acts 2:14-47; Acts 3:12-26; Acts 4:1-4.

Pray It!
Jesus, I don't want to be a couch-potato Christian who simply sits through my relationship with You. I want to make a difference. Use me, Lord. Show me specific ways I can begin an outbreak for You!

Stupid Questions

• If the Number Two pencil is really the most popular, why is it still number two?

• Why is there Braille on the drive-through bank machines?

• If you try to fail, and succeed at failing, which have you done?

• If all the world's a stage, where's the audience sitting?

• If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

We aren't told his name, but John 5:1-18 tells the story of a young man who had been paralyzed from birth. Jesus found him in Jeresalem at Bethesda-a pool of water that was rumored to be stirred by angels-thus giving healing power to the water. Legend stated that the first person into the water after it had been stirred would be healed.

This pool was probably a hot spring or sulfer water that bubbled up from the ground. This particular man had waited by the pool for 38 years hoping to someday be the first to touch the water's surface after it stirred in the mysterious way it for which it was known.

Jesus saw him lying by the pool and approached him. “Do you want to get well?” He asked.

Do I want to get well? the paralylzed man may have thought. What kind of question is that? I've been here for almost four decades waiting for my moment. Do I want to get well? I'm paralyzed! Why else would I spend the hours in my day lying beside a pool of water?

At first glance, it might seem as though Jesus asked a stupid question. After all, Jesus is God. He knows everything. He knew exactly how long the man had lain by the pool's edge, and He knew why. Yet, knowing this, He still approached the paralytic with the question: “Do you want to get well?”

Even though it may seem like a stupid question, we know that Jesus is the source of all wisdom. So there must be more to the question than merely the question itself.

Man doesn't understand the ways of God. Noah probably thought it was s stupid idea to build an ark. Up to that point in history, rain hadn't existed. The earth was watered by a daily dew that covered the entire land. Only after the flood, did God choose to water the earth with rain.

So, having never heard of rain, Noah may have thought it was a stupid idea to build a boat big enough to hold his entire family and two of each creature that roamed the earth. And why was he building this boat? To save himself, his loved ones and the animals from huge torrents of “rain” he couldn't even imagine.

If God would have said, “I'm going to cover the earth with “hooley-galuba,” it would have meant the same thing. It was a word-like rain-that didn't exist in Noah's vocabulary or mind. But he trusted, and he obeyed.

Know It!
God's infinite ways are beyond your finite thinking. When it seems stupid on the surface, know there's much more behind it that could be life-changing.

Read It!
Genesis 6-8; John 5:1-18.

Pray It!
Lord, I often don't understand Your ways, and I admit that when I don't understand I sometimes ignore You. Will You forgive me, Jesus? Don't let my lack of understanding stand in the way of my obedience.

Meet Friends: Mercy and Justice

For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. (Psalms 30:5)

Lately, I’ve seen so many people under trail. I have one friend who, despite her wanting to stop the physical relationship with her boyfriend, the guy she wants to marry nonetheless, her own effort to stop has become useless. She’s cried out to God in her agony to stop pursuing that type of relationship, only to have the guy eventually end things. She’s under pressure now to let God be the real focus of her life so He can refine her.

I also know someone else who, in the past had gotten pulled over for drinking and driving and ended up in jail over night, with their teen daughter at home not having a clue where her mother was when she woke up the next morning. Her mom had her license taken away and had to see a probation officer for a time. You’d think that would be a lesson learned. But a few years later I watched as this mom was pulled over for speeding, she reached over in her console. Somehow I knew what she was going to do. Then finally while the officer was in his car running her traffic history, she slipped the penny in her mouth. I had learned that she had almost an entire bottle of wine since that afternoon. When the officer came back he told her that since she hadn’t had a history in almost 3 years he was going to let her off with a warning. She didn’t even have to pay the ticket. As we drove off I asked God why He had let her off. Why did he have mercy on her when the officer could have asked her if she had been drinking? He could have done something to make this woman wise up. What I thought was God doing nothing could very well have been something. Having enough fear to put the penny in her mouth was a signal though that for that moment she was under trial. That may have been God’s justice.

God always has His justice, but in Him there is mercy… a mercy that puts fire under the trials… a mercy that transforms the heart. Through trials is God’s justice. Through mercy is His grace.

Focused on H2O

Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem for a special feast- Feast of the Jews-when he found the paralytic at Bethesda. Jesus would have passed merchants selling fish, lamb and other food in the open-air market. He would have noticed children playing in the streets and heard the haggling of shop keepers trying to earn a day's living. He would have seen women selling brightly-colored shawls and fabric, and would have smelled freshly-baked bread warming over an open grill. Though hundreds of activities and people could have distracted Him, He walked straight to the paralytic at Bethesda.

Jesus walks straight to you, as well. Yes, He has famines to end, new stars to hang, tortured Christians calling His name, diseases to tend to and planets to rotate, but He still sees you in the midst of your need and walks straight to you.

It's interesting to note that the paralytic was so intensely focused on the water's surface, He didn't even notice who was in his presence. The Creator of the universe standing next to me? Hmmm. Wouldn't know about that, I don't want to take my eyes off of the water.< p> How often are you so focused on your own problems that you fail to notice the King of Kings is standing next to you waiting to meet your needs? We get so busy looking to other sources for answers, that we forget to notice Jesus is the answer!

Yes, Jesus asked the paralytic what seemed a silly question. But He had to get the man's attention. What does He have to do to get your attention? Jesus will get your attention, and He'll go to great lengths to get it. Hopefully, His death and ressurection has captured your attention.

Eventually He'll command the attention of everyone in the world when they'll bow and confess that He is Lord on the Day of Judgement. On what or with whom are you so focused on right now, that it's interfering with your full attention to Jesus Christ?

Know It!
God wants you so tuned in to Him, that when He needs your attention, He automatically has it. When you're faced with problems, don't think of God as your last resort. Turn to Him first; after all, He's standing right next to you just waiting to help.

Read It!
Lamentations 3:22-26; 2 Chronicles 16:9; John 5:1- 18.

Pray It!
Dear Jesus, when I'm faced with a problem it sometimes seems easier to go to a friend or look somewhere besides You for the answer. Remind me that You're ready and willing to share Your wisdom with me. Help me turn to You as a first step instead of a last resort.

He Knows The Feeling

“In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.”
s(Isaiah 63:9) NLT

God and I have been discussing suffering a lot lately. Maybe that’s because my life seems to be full of it. I’ll bet some of you can relate. Every time I pick up my head, there is another reason to drop it again. But, friend, I have some amazing encouragement straight from the heart of God.

He knows the feeling. Wow! Just take a minute and fathom that. Jesus felt what we feel. He knows hurt, abuse, abandonment, rejection, loneliness, and so much more in greater portions than we do. He was here on this earth and went through so much more than we face. (But including everything we face!) His eyes were wet with tears and his throat dry from screaming. But, more than all of that, He feels every hurt your heart has. Your body holds God Himself and everything you feel, He feels. He knows.

But, He didn’t stop there. He knows the hurt, but He also has a way out. He has come in the midst of the mess in your life, and He is holding your hand, and He is offering a way out. He personally is offering to rescue you. He’ll walk you out of the storm, simply because He adores you. It’s love that calls Him to reach into your world and gently pull you up to His.

And that love never goes away! It will last, “through all the years.” That means NOTHING that has happened, is happening, or will happen can affect the fact that Christ has redeemed you and will show you the way out if you let Him. My precious friend let Jesus, “lift you up and carry you,” through the suffering,” in your world. He knows the suffering and He has the strength and power to turn it into something beautiful.

A Special Guest

Genesis 18:3-5 "If I have found favor in your eyes, my Lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under the trees. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed."

Have you ever had a special guest at your home. If you have then you know what I am talking about when I say you "get ready" for their arrival. Whether it be a relative or minister, teacher or old family friend. There are preparations for it. Your mom will make you clean up your room and help with chores. Special food is prepared. Mom gets out the good China. Guest towels are put in the bathroom, that you aren't allowed to use. Your parents want everything to be just right.

For past few days our family been preparing our home and our lives for my oldest son, Jerry to arrive on Wednesday night (last night). Everyone cleaned up their rooms and got chores out of the way. I made several dinners and froze them so I didn't have to be cooking while he is here. Jon made sure he got tickets to his football game on Friday for all of us. Jay made plans for them to meet some friends and go out one night. Our family is also planning on going out to dinner on Saturday night. Jerry will only be here for 5 days and he lives over 1,000 miles away. We only see him 3-4 times a year. And with only 5 days we want to make the best of all the time we have. These next few days will be exciting and fun.

Seems like when your time is precious you really put on your best face and enjoy every moment you have together. We really should live like this everyday of our lives. For our time here on earth is short and no one know what day will be our last. Do something special today for someone, treat them like the royal guest. Show them how much their time means to you. In Bible times when guests came to your home, you would wash their feet, this was an expression of hospitality and love. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, the story is told in John 13:1-17.

Excuses

Excuses given to teachers to explain a student's absence from school:

• This note is to excuse Johnny from being absent on January 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33.

• Sheila wasn't feeling well, so we had her shot.

• Please excuse David for being. It was his father's fault.

• Amy Jo fell down and now has a crack between her hips.

So Jesus asked the paralytic lying by the water's edge a question the man would never forget. “Do you want to be well?”

We might assume the man would seize the incredible opportunity to become whole, to walk again, to live a normal life. “Yes!” we want him to say.

“Oh, Jesus, I've been waiting for You for 38 years! Now You're here, and I can become whole!”

If you've read the Scripture, you know that wasn't his response. Check it out in John 5:7: “ 'Sir,' the invalid replied, 'I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone lese goes down ahead of me.' ”

He didn't really answer Jesus' question, did he? Sound familiar? “Did you do your homework?”

“My dog is sick. I had to work last night. I think I'm getting the flu. I lost my textbook. I ran out of gas. My date stood me up. I lost my car keys. I didn't have time to take a shower. I was up late last night. My dad lost his job. I forgot to set my alarm. I didn't know we had school today. I never knew the S.A.T. wasn't an open- book test. I can't remember were I put my notebook.”

It's a yes/no question! Why give excuses? When someone asks, “Did you do your homework?” all you need to say is yes or no. Nothing else really matters.

When Jesus asked, “Do you want to be well?” it was a yes/no question. All the man needed to do was simply respond with a yes or a no. Instead, he made an excuse: “There's no one here to help me.” (What about the Creator of the universe standing right next to you?)

“Someone else always beats me to the water.” The question wasn't, “Why haven't you made it to the pool?” The question was simply, “Do you want to be well?”

What kind of excuses do you give the Creator of the universe? When He asks a specific question, give Him a specific answer. Don't mess around with excuses.

Know It!
When God asks a specific question, He wants a specific and honest answer.

Read It!
John 5:1-18; John 14:15-23.

Pray It!
Lord, I've gotten into the habit of making excuses. I want to be open and honest with You. Help me not to play games. Teach me to be specific truthful when we talk.

God's Intensive Care Unit

“Do you want to be well?” Jesus asked the paralytic. To bystanders who had seen the man lying by Bethesda's pool, it may have seemed a stupid question. But it was actually the wisest question Jesus could have asked.

Think about it: The paralytic had stayed by the pool for 38 years. If he truly wanted to get well, why didn't he recruit some friends? “Hey, guys! I need a little help,” he could have said. “I appreciate you carrying me down here, but I need you to hang around a little while longer. See, when the water is stirred, I gotta be the first one in the pool. And well . . . it's obvious I can't do that on my own.”

After 38 years, couldn't he have come up with something? Or had he become comfortable in his sickness? Maybe he'd become cozy under his cove by the pool. Perhaps he made friends with the other sick people surrounding the water's edge.

If Jesus were to make him well, things would have to change. First of all, his identity would change. He was probably known as “Paralyzed Pool Guy.” He would no longer be PPG; he'd be a new man with a new identity.

Next, his environment would change. If Jesus made PPG whole, he'd leave the pool. He would no longer hang out with the same friends at the same place. Could it be PPG really didn't want to change? It's easy to become comfortable in our sick surroundings. And it's tough to think about change-walking away from friends, giving up old habits.

“Do you want to be well?” was obviously an extremely wise question, wasn't it?

Jesus is referred to in a variety of ways throughout Scripture, and one title He's known for is “The Great Physician.” Let's picture the pool of Bethesda as God's Intensive Care Unit. He showed up ready and willing to do “surgery” on someone who desperately needed a physical touch.

God's I.C.U. isn't limited to a pool. In fact, it could be your bedroom, your car or wherever you talk with Him. The Great Physician is here, and He's ready and willing to make you whole. What kind of spiritual surgery do you need? He's asking you the same question He asked PPG: “Do you want to be well?” If so, you'll be willing to allow Him to touch you in a way that will necessitate change.

Know It!
If God makes you whole, things will have to change. Are you willing to let go of a relationship, a friendship, a specific environment, your identity?

Matthew 15:29-31; Luke 17:19; John 5:1-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.

Pray It!
Lord, I do want to be whole. I'm willing to make the changes necessary for You to do in my life all You desire.

Get Up!

Even though PPG made excuses, Jesus saw right through them. He knew deep inside the man wanted to be well. Perhaps fear kept him at the pool for 38 years. Or maybe he was intimidated by others who were more ill than he. Whatever the reason for his excuses, Jesus broke through the barrier.

Note the first thing Christ instructed PPG to do: “Get up!” We might think since PPG had just given an excuse instead of answering Christ's direct question, he might give another excuse: “I can't 'get up.' I'm paralyzed! Why do you think I'm lying here by the pool?”

But he didn't. Perhaps since Jesus had penetrated the man's thinking, he decided not to respond with another excuse. He simply obeyed. No arguments. No questions. No resistance. He just did as Jesus said. He got up.

Jesus asked PPG to do the impossible. It's crazy to think a man who's been paralyzed for 38 years could get up and walk. Yes, crazy in human terms. But The Great Physician holds all power and is definitely in the miracle business. With God, all things are possible!

There will be times when Jesus will ask you to do what seems to be impossible. How will you respond? Excuses or obedience?

Jeremiah was only a teenager when God called him to speak His Holy Word. Jeremiah's response was, “I can't do that! I'm too young!” But God reminded Jeremiah that He would put His very words in Jeremiah's mouth. All Jeremiah needed to do was simply obey.

God will never ask you to do something without equipping you with everything you need to complete the task. If He says, “Get up!” know that He'll provide the strength needed to do so.

When PPG heard the command, “Get up!” he knew right away it would mean action on his part. If you want to be whole, God requires action on your part, as well. Are you willing to put forth the action and do whatever God asks of you to become whole?

Know It!
Instead of questioning God's ways, He wants you to respond in obedient faith. What's impossible for man, is always possible for The Great Physician.

Read It!
Jeremiah 1:5-10; John 5:1-18; John 14:12-14.

Pray It!
Jesus, I wonder how much more You could do in my life and through my life if I'd simply obey You instead of question You. Strengthen my faith, Lord. I want to obey You in every area of my life.

Identify Your Bags

“Do you want to be well?” Jesus asked PPG.

Instead of answering the question, the “paralyzed pool guy” simply gave an excuse. But Jesus saw right through it and instructed the man to get up.

Jesus then told him to pick up his bedroll. “Grab your bag. Get your stuff. Identify your luggage.”

When you check your bag at the airport, you label it so you'll be able to quickly identify it when your flight has landed. You've been there, haven't you-waiting by the carousel at baggage claim-carefully watching for your bag. When your luggage glides through, you reach out and claim it.

“This is my baggage. It has my name on it. I'm identifying it as mine.”

Jesus was asking the paralyzed man to identify his baggage. No more excuses. Stop blaming others. Just go ahead and admit, “This is mine.”

Jesus wants you to do the same: Identify your baggage. Go ahead. Admit it. “This is my eating disorder. I'm naming it.”

“This is my problem with lust. I'm identifying it.”

“This is my battle with alcohol. I admit it.”

“This is my addiction to porn. My name is on this baggage.”

Whatever your baggage consists of, stop blaming others and admit it's yours. “The sexual abuse. I'm not going to blame him any more. I need to deal with it.”

“The cutting. I've always said it's because of the hurt she caused. But I'm through blaming. I accept this baggage as my problem. I want to deal with it.”

After you've identified your baggage, give it to The Great Physician. He died for your baggage. Why hold on to it?

The next thing Jesus told PPG to do was to walk. “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk” (John 5: cool .

The days of lying around the pool are over. God is here to make you whole. So get up! Yes, that requires faith in Him to do the impossible.

Pick up your mat. First you'll have to identify it. “Yes, this is my baggage.” Then you'll need to get rid of it. You don't need it any longer. Give it up. “Here, Jesus. I place this in Your hands.”

And walk. Get on with your life. Allow God to take your past, your illness, your failure and make something beautiful out of it.

Know It!
It's scary to identify our baggage, isn't it? But you're not alone. The Great Physician stands with you. He's ready to take the luggage that's been crippling you.

Read It!
Isaiah 49:13; Isaiah 57:18-19; John 5:1-18.

Pray It!
Dear Lord, as of today, I will no longer place the blame for the hurt in my life on other people. Yes, at times I've been a victim. But I'm tired of wallowing in the pain. I identify my baggage, and I give it to You. Please make me whole.
