It would be so funny if "yu" was the Japanese for "fish."

ゆゆゆゆゆ

Although I suppose "ya" doesn't look unfishy either...

Isn't it yü? There's a difference.

...and besides, it's only funny in Japanese.

No, I'm pretty sure its Yu, without the umlauts.

I could have sworn that a Chinese person told me that it was "yü." sweatdrop

My dictionary says otherwise! xp Anyway, I hate that ü noise. I'm glad it barely ever shows up...

On page 28 or so where there's that book list, and it mentions Yookoso, I by no means recommend that book. It's terrible. Terrible.

Minna No Nihongo was the best thing to ever happen to my Japanese. That, and 文化中級日本語, and some other grammar guides that might only be buyable from a Japanese bookshop. But for beginners, I recommend Minna No Nihongo. Scratch that, I swear my life on it. 3nodding

And ゆ looks totally like a fish.

By the way, anyone curious to see what kanji the kana came from should check these out:
History of Hiragana
History of Katakana

Yeah, the kanji of origin is the same on both pages, but I put both here for those curious to read about the history of both scripts. I thought it was interesting, anyway. xp [/nerd]

Okay, I tried looking through earlier posts to make sure I'm not repeating a question...but there are too many and I'm lazy.

I finally figured out how to write Japanese characters in microsoft word (not sure if it's hiragana/katakana/whatever, I don't know any Japanese yet). Is there a way I can type the characters online (in this post, for instance) without having to type it in word and then paste it in here? Also, when you're typing the characters, how do you switch between hiragana, katakana, kanji, etc.?

ひかる

I figured it out how to type them in here. sweatdrop heart

Buuuuttt, I still don't know how to type in the kanji. I see a kana status button, but I don't even know what kana is so...yeah, I don't know if it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. emo

You type in the kana and hit the space bar.
