"I think maybe River and I should leave you and the other grown ups to that. I think Amalirahc was getting upset that we kept reminding, I mean... I know River did before he did anything but he sort of...."
She didn't like to admit it because Amalirahc was her friend, but there was something to be said about him being so much younger than herself.
"Forgets when he's excited," she told her ada quietly.

Earendil nodded slowly. "Well ... he is still young," he reminded her, "and he's a lot more sensitive than he likes to pretend. But we'll see what we can do."
He felt sorry for Amalirahc. He knew that in the worry about Leyenda, the boy tended to be a bit forgotten. Still, he understood how Miyuki felt. It was hard to try to help someone when it was so easy to hurt their feelings without meaning to.

"I hope so, I don't want to make it sound like I'm nagging him."
At times she knew it sometimes felt like she was going to have to, and that was hard for her. She didn't want to be nagging anyone, much less Amalirahc.
"And he's so smart sometimes..."
Smart wasn't the word, mature was what she was really looking for. There were times that she could forget Amalirahc was much younger than herself because when push came to shove he held himself to be much older.

Earendil chuckled softly. "I think I know what you mean. That sometimes he seems older than he is. He is quite smart for his age. And it makes it harder to remember just how young he is."
He reached around her and gave her a one-armed hug. "We'll worry about that later, all right? For now let's just focus on our dinner."
He smiled at her. They were there to visit after all.

Miyuki nodded before turning to her dinner. Her ada was right to say worry about it later, there wasn't anything she could do now and she was really hungry after everything that happened that day.
Being reminded of dinner (and everyone had already started by now) she dug right in.

The meal passed pleasantly, and at the end, Lothiriel had a caution to give to their guests.
"Enjoy your stay," she told them warmly, "but I would advise against going into the city on Elenya next. Anarya might be a good day to avoid the city as well. We had a sentencing today, and there's going to be an execution, which I'm sure you would all like to avoid."

Miyuki stared at Lothiriel blanking, at her age she understood what an execution meant, but the idea of it she couldn't wrap around in her brain. Knowing and hearing were two different things.
Though she noticed it was her mother that looked worried, though Lin was more worried for Lothiriel and Estel, "That would be wise, yes, we'll keep that in mind."
She didn't know how to ask if everything was alright without sounding awkward because there were other reasons why someone could end up executed, but often it was reserved for something unforgivable.

Andarien looked up at Earendil, who was pointedly looking away from him, and then reached across his father and tugged on Lin's sleeve in hopes that she would help him.
"Nana," he asked her, "what's she saying?"
He could tell that it was bad, whatever it was, but he didn't understand most of what she had said.

Lin mused on this for a moment before looking down at Andarien. He was perhaps... a bit too young to for her to just tell bluntly.
"That we shouldn't go the city on certain days, I'll explain the rest when you're older," she replied quietly.
If Andarien remembered by then.

Andarien blinked at her. "Why?" he asked. "If you explain I can understand!"
He didn't want to be left out, after all.

Lin could almost hear her father snickering in her head, at least she was sure he would have been if he had been there. What did some people in Gaia call it? Karma she believed.
She glanced at Earendil, of course he was the smart one and not looking.
"Because that is one concept I am not ready yet to explain to you."

Andarien's brow furrowed in confusion. "Why?" he asked again. "Don't you understand it either, Nana?"
he felt a twinge of fear. If there was something that his (seemingly) all-knowing mother didn't know about, then it must be really huge! She'd never kept anything from him before, that he knew of.
"You know," Earendil mused softly, "it might be good for him to at least understand what's going on. A lesson in responsibility for one's actions. It's better than waiting until he's older to learn about punishments."

Lin nodded slowly as she paused to try and think about how to go about this. She knew how impressionable children were at this age. Honestly, how did her father do it? It wasn't like he could hand her off to her mother every time she asked something uncomfortable or deep.
She sighed, "There is a person who is to be punished for breaking the law, and will be punished publicity for everyone to see, but it is best if we don't see that punishment."
Not to mention unpleasant (didn't need to see more death than needed), but she really didn't want to explain that one either.

"Oh," Andarien murmured, his brow furrowing thoughtfully. He turned to his father. "Ada, what does it mean, breaking the law?"
Earendil smiled at his son. "Well, you know how we have things that tell you not to do, right? Don't hit people, don't take things that aren't yours ... right?"
Andarien nodded.
"Well," Earendil went on, "when it is a king or queen who makes such big rules for the whole kingdom, those are called laws. They're much bigger than the kind of rules that we give you. If a person disobeys, that means they're breaking the law. They're doing things they're not allowed to do."
"Oh!" Andarien nodded his head more eagerly now that he understood better. But then he tilted his head again and looked back at Lin. "But what did he do? I want to make sure I don't do it, too! I don't want to be punished!"

Now that was something Lin didn't know and she simply didn't really want to ask that.
"I'm don't know, we haven't asked, but if you're never sure if something is right or wrong you just have to ask. We won't, nor will the King and Queen here ask anything unreasonable of you, just remember that."
