"Maze?" River perked up at the sound of that. The names meant little to her, as she hadn't met those people yet, but the maze sounded interesting, at the very least. "Obviously you didn't get lost ... but was it fun? What's it like?"
She herself had never been underground before, and to be honest she wasn't sure it was an experience she wanted to try. Still, the lure of a maze was always interesting, and she took pride in being able to navigate mazes, especially if it was her first try at it.

"It was like being underground, and i know that was obvious but I mean... the maze in the Southland Palace is underground but it looks like a series of long dark hallways. This place was just dark if it weren't for Princess Elia lighting the way," Miyuki tried to explain.
Of course, after remembering that River had not been to the Southland palace.
"We saw the castle well and it has huge gears that bring up water."

River mulled it over for a few minutes as they continued to follow Amalirahc down the hallways. "Well," she said finally, "I've been in a cave before ... is it like that at all?"
She didn't mind the cave with the glowing water: there was light in there, and she knew that the way out was never far away. But would it really be the same in the desert, in a castle of all places?

There was a pause after that, Miyuki had been under ground before but it was when she was younger and she wasn't sure if that was a cave or not. Maybe it had been, but that was kind of different too.
"In a way, the walls are unfinished like you would find in a cave but there are beams that support it all since it was all built that way. Elia says it is to hide one of my family's portals."
Though she didn't know why there was a portal all the way out here. She understood the Borderlands, her grandfather had founded Haven, and she understood the Southland that was were her mother met her father and apparently she had an aunt who was by blood her father's aunt and by adoption her mother's sister. That last one kind of made Miyuki's head hurt.

River pursed her lips thoughtfully. "So there's a portal here that goes to your family's home, and that's where the portal from the Borderlands goes as well?"
Part of her was tempted to try to find that portal so that she could go home - she was beginning to feel pangs of homesickness once in a while, and she longed to see her parents and her sisters again - but the practical side of her told her that it wouldn't be a good idea, as she would probably end up terrifying people in all three areas - Eastland, Gaia, and Borderlands - by disappearing and/or appearing.

"Well, technically it goes to my grandparents' portal room, which is in their home, but from there you can get to the other two portals."
Well, there were more portals than that, as there was the portal to the school (she had never been through there) and a portal to the Lau clan compound (because of great-grandmother Mi), among other places.

"Other two?" River repeated, somewhat surprised. "You mean there's more than just the one to the Borderlands and here?"
That worried her. What if she would go into the wrong portal by mistake? That could be disastrous.

Miyuki nodded, "There's one that leads to the Southland palace too."
She thought that would have made sense seeing as her ada came from there.

Well, that mightn't be too bad ...
No, River realized, she couldn't do something like that. She tried to abandon the idea out of hand, but she couldn't get rid of it entirely.
"I guess that's where your father is from, isn't he?" she asked Miyuki softly, wishing now that she hadn't told Amalirahc to go so slowly. "I wonder what it's like there ..."

"It's hot, because it's also desert," Miyuki replied, "But for some reason I don't think it's as hot as it is here, that might be because it isn't always desert? Mommy once told me that about every thousand years or so the trees come and it's all green."
At least she thought that was why, she certainly couldn't imagine it at all.

"Really?" River was surprised by that. "Weird. Why would it do that?"
Of course, she only knew about forests, and what seasons did to them - she didn't know anything at all about other climates, other than the fact that deserts were very hot and very dry.

"You know... I don't know, maybe Mommy told me a long time ago and I just didn't understand..."
The Southland had been one of the first places she learned about growing up.
"But I really don't know, it might have something to do with where it is and why it is a desert. I mean... in deserts otherwise you don't really notice the changing of seasons here would you?"
After all, there weren't many trees and she doubted they changed their leaves and of course there was no snow. Instead of hot and cold it was just hot and less hot.

River giggled at Miyuki, unable to help herself. "How would I know? I've never been in a desert before, let alone for the changing of seasons."
Sometimes Miyuki was just plain amusing, she had to admit. And even if there were some things that she would prefer to talk to someone else about, she was glad that Miyuki was her friend.
At last they arrived at the door to the courtyard, and Amalirahc turned and grinned at the girls triumphantly. "See? I got us here and I didn't run even once!"
River bit her lip to keep from saying what she wanted to: that he had gone too slow this time instead of too fast. He was seeming awful sensitive today.

Miyuki was about to add how they were first told it didn't snow only that it got less hot, so Miyuki had deduced it from that since she didn't live in a desert long enough to know.
"Thanks Amalirahc," Miyuki smiled brightly.
Even though she too thought it was too slow, but she wasn't going to tell Amalirahc that. Poor guy, he just didn't seem to understand, which was probably why he was going to extra pains to "not" do things he shouldn't do by over doing it.

Amalirahc grinned, glad that for once he wasn't getting lectured about something.
"So what do you want to play?" he asked the girls eagerly. "Princess Wren gave me that box so we have marbles and jacks and spinning tops and the bouncy balls ..."
"How about jacks?" River suggested. "It must be close to dinner time, that way if we're in the middle of a round when someone comes for us, we won't have to wait too long to finish up."
