Granted, using "are" brings for one bizarre mental image.

Imagine drowning with your life on its very edge, when someone swims up to you and starts performing CPR on you BEFORE they take you to shore.

Then you both drown from too much mouth-to-mouth and not enough swimming. Thats one for the Darwins.
