Hey everyone one I just started playing the gaurd with the release of the new codex.Anyway I'm drawing up my armylist right now and was wondering if it's worth using conscripts I mean I just can't see the point for 1 more point you get frag grenades higher stats and options.Does anyone here use conscripts and if so what was your experience with them?

Aye, Conscripts are generally not worth it any more, not even with their new overpriced special recycle rule from Chenkov. The ability of infantry squads to form up into one massive squad has really taken away the need for Conscripts. Instead now we have a large blob of infantry that fights and shoots better, can have special and heavy weapons, has sergeants with (overpriced) power weapons and can have Commissars attached for that extra punch.

I used to use them with the previous codex, but as of now my old Conscripts are recycled into regular infantry squads. They simply are one of those units nobody is going to take these days because they are an oversight, an afterthought that hasn't been given enough thought or care, thus making them useless codex filler.

Me myself is going to use them for fluff reasons, building lists after a storyline is more fun to me. wink

But they are a bit overpriced yes... Completely useless in fact, but they're still give a big piece of character to your army.

True, I used to field them because they were part of the Cadian ethos. White Shields trying to earn their place in the ranks of the regular infantry. But the new codex has implemented a few too radical changes for me so I decided to ditch them in favour of regular infantry, the real fighting core of the army.

Background is the main reason I'm building up two squads of penal troopers. Plus they are actually useful unlike Possessed.

I read that penal troops have to roll for their random ability before deployment, making them less random and more useful.

I LOVE the penal squad! I must make myself one~

I think I'm going to takes some penal troopers aswell. They seem to be worth the price. However it's too bad you can't give them a special weapon.

You don't want to give convicts anything more expensive then that. Even a lasgun is most generous in their case.

They are a Stubborn throw-away unit that can either range ahead of the main force or move in support of other elements. I wouldn't entrust them with too much, as their background says.

Talk tanks to me wink What tank to take along for a standard battle? Are any of the new tanks really worth taking?

Hmmm, most of the new tanks are rather useless and overpriced to an obscene degree. I kind of regret hacking up two regular Russ tanks and turning them into a Vanquisher and Eradicator respectively. The tried and tested vanilla Russ and Demolisher are still the way to go. I might just saw off their lascannons and replace those with heavy bolters though, to save expenses and purpose the tanks more towards their ultimate goal: anti-infantry.

My current tank support choices are leaning towards two regular Russ tanks with heavy bolters all round and a Griffon, the best artillery tank in the book. Sure it might not defeat 3+ armour saves but at least I can re-roll scatter.

I have been told that the sneaky choices really are the Hydra with those special autocannons and the Manticore, which can fire cluster missiles on the move.

Please don't bother with the Deathstrike, please. Not unless you're playing Apocalypse or a very special scenario.

It is a pity that the new tanks are so expensive and somewhat lacking in actual use. Same old, same old on the table isn't it?

Hydra's are a rather nice support choice, even when lacking skimmer targets. I'd imagine a squadron of three could wreak havoc on enemy troops and lightly armoured vehicles.

The Manticore has cluster missiles?

*checks brand new codex*

WOW. burning_eyes D3 large blasts per missile. Too bad it isn't AP3, but strength 10 should insta-kill most things dead. Hmmm, maybe a trio of Hydra's backed by a Manticore and a standard Russ. It would be expensive but I can still fit in lots and lots of men to form a screen in front of those.

Still, a barrage of strength 10 rockets isn't something to sneeze at. I can see why they limited the Manticore to four missiles and one launch per turn. Though a squadron of three could really make some heads spin. First turn barrages fired at foes in their own deployment zone could do a lot of damage.

Let's talk Valkyries, how's your pretty? mrgreen

All built and all done! I think I beat you by a long shot. whee I've decided to paint it Dark Angels green with Graveyard Earth stripes carefully drybrushed on in faded patterns. I even went the extra mile and painted the underside of the hull, wings, tail and rocket pods a faint sky blue. It's a shame that the interior is so hard to admire from the outside. If I get another one I might leave the door gunners out and just glue the doors and hatch shut.

And the flying stand is simply marvellous! Sturdy, useful and well, it actually works like a charm.

I do hope that those storm troopers are released this August, I'm itching to get a box of those along with the Cadian command squad and convert them into veterans with carapace armour.

I've basecoated number one and number two, number three is still grey. I've decided not to paint them, not until I've finished that Stompa. A bit like a reward system. I just need to find a good set of colours for the head and tccw arm of the thing and I'm done with it.

I must say that I am rather envious of your description, I bet it'll look a whole lot better than my sand coloured Elysian assault wing. Soon.. emo
