I was driving to church this morning, as I do every Sunday, like all good Americans. However, where I was driving is unimportant in the grand scheme of what I witnessed today. So, as I was driving to church, late, as I am apt to do, I drove past something that caught my eye. A rabbit was sitting on the edge of the road. Now, normally, this would be nothing. However, the rabbit was sitting and staring. Just under it, under its bowed head, under its gaze, was another rabbit that had been run over. And, as I drove past, the still-living rabbit, the normally skittish beast, did not move a muscle. It did not take notice of the machine of death rumbling by, one that was probably quite similar to the one that had just killed the now-dead rabbit. And I thought to myself: 'They must have been friends.'

Now, you may find me weak, or crazy, for that thought, for that instant when I tried my best to reach out to that rabbit and declare my heartfelt apologies and sympathy for the reckless death that had been wrought upon its fellow and not thought about twice by those that killed. Imagine the terror, the absolute and complete terror that would occur if you were walking to your car one day with a friend, having, say, just left the movie theater, and as you are talking about that final twist in the latest blockbuster hit, a large machine comes by and crushes your friend in front of you before continuing on its way without even stopping. Your friend would be right next to you, it was mere fate that they were killed rather than you, and their mangled corpse, bleeding, broken, and flattened, seems to be staring up at you. What would you be thinking? That is what was going through that rabbit's simplistic, underdeveloped, completely natural mind.

I'm not going to draw any conclusions. I'm not going to wrap things up in a neat little bow for you. All I'm doing is describing something I saw today in, perhaps, a little bit different way than you would have seen it. And, maybe, it'll change the way you observe and think about things. Maybe.

Or maybe not.
