I play tenor sx for Marching and jazz band. I hate it with a passion, but I apparently do very well with it, because my Band director put me in first chair in the second jazz band. I'm also doubling on alto for this one olo., It's crazy.
But enogh about jazz, iI'm in the double reed section!
Can someone convince me to stay in the bassoon section? I love it a lot, but I'm stuck. In the top band in my school, I'm at the bottom end of the food chain, even though I'm easily the best player! Damn seniority! I have to play second- and, yes, even third bassooon when I can play first bassoon better than our senior first bassoon, AND I can read tenor clef easily. She can't even play high G, so what's she doing as first chair? Sucking, that's what.
Sorry, I've just been fuming about this for months, and now I'm seriously considering going to the saxophone full-time, or quitting band altogether. But I really don't want to do either, considering I just got a brand-new Fox 240, and it is the sweetest sounding instrument I own. My tenor Is pretty good quality too, and so is my alto.

I don't think you can do anything except wait for next year D:

Thought about that. However, the second bassoon doesn't graduate until the end of next year, and I'd have to wait for my senior year to become first chair. But by that time, there won't be any other bassoons. I'll earn the title by default, not from my mad skills.

I know how you feel. Are your band directors the kind that pick favorites?

Don't quit- they need your mad skills. Soon hopefully they will realize that.

This is my second year playing bassoon. I made into regionals and wind ensemble my first year so this year i'm freaky out again.

Before bassoon I played tenor sax in marching band and jazz band.

Also I just picked up a baritone to play in winter brassline

I actually started bassoon out of pure randomness, my director just asked if anyone wanted to do it and I raised my hand without really thinking about it. Best accident ever sweatdrop

I bug my director a lot about how we don't have a contra bassoon

I shall break the bassoon power with the awesomeness of the oboe! ^^ I do <3 the bassoon though! We have a new band director this year though and he sucks! I used to do percussion or flags for marching band but now he makes me play the tuba! I hate it!

I do too, even though I know there are hardly any pieces that have a part for them At least I haven't seen very many.

I'll be the only bassoon until my senior year.

Be loud, be proud. Though, not too loud. We don't want to make our band sound bad.

I play the oboe right now in our band and when I'm in marching band next year I'm planning to play the flute.

I'm considering playing the bassoon, but I need to at least be able to play scales on my cello first.
