Chad Kennedy, a partner at Lighthouse Financial, agreed that the 401(k) does come with some limitations. He said, “Traditional 401k’s do not provide much flexibility. If you would like access to your cash prior to 59 1/2, you will have to pay a 10% penalty and income tax on your withdrawals,” Said Kennedy.

Cloudflare (NYSE:NET), Nutanix (NASDAQ:NTNX) and Twilio (NYSE:TWLO) are among Piper Sandler's favorite cloud automation software stocks for 2025.

"Policy and interest rate uncertainty, alongside new product releases, potentially pushes more of the IT budget spend into C2H again," analyst James Fish wrote in a note to clients. "Sentiment and valuations were over-extended until year-end, with the recent reset in names creating some opportunities. Relative solely to our themes, we believe NET, NTNX, RBRK, SPSC, ANET, PSTG, & TWLO are [the] best setup."

Fish also mentioned Rubrik (RBRK), Arista Networks (ANET), Pure Storage (PSTG) and SPS Commerce (SPSC) as well.

Five themes for 2025
There are five themes for investors to look for in 2025, with growth scarcity being among the most important.

"Across tracked companies, only 23% and 3% of companies are expected to grow [more than] 15% and 30%, respectively, which is significantly lower than prior years," Fish wrote in a note to clients. "This has led to multiples being paid for growth-oriented names that are similar to pandemic-levels. With this setup that has followed multiple years of underwhelming IPO activity, we see 2025 being a likely stronger IPO market."

Companies like Rubrik, Cloudflare, Samsara (IOT) and SPS Commerce should benefit from this trend, Fish said.

Additionally, IT budgets are likely to be "stronger" in 2025, with Fish seeing a potential "modest acceleration."

"This higher spending appears to be around new datacenters and solution refresh, particularly in 2H25," Fish wrote. "Hardware incumbents are also likely to bring about new products that could fuel a product-driven refresh aspect."

Companies like Arista Networks, Cisco (CSCO), Comvault (CVLT), F5 Networks (FFIV), Juniper Networks (JNPR), Pure Storage, Rubrik and Digi International (DGII) should benefit from this trend, Fish added.

Another theme that should be prevalent in 2025 is Republicans operating a "unified" government, with the party in leadership positions in the executive and legislative branches.

"With Republicans operating a 'unified government,' there are potential policy changes around inflation, DOGE, taxes, M&A, energy, and TikTok that could be material," Fish wrote.

The last two themes include competitive changes (potential for pricing changes and M&A), and labor automation, with companies like Arista Networks, Pure Storage, Nutanix and F5 Networks potentially benefiting.

AppLovin's 4th Quarter Earnings Highlights
The company's advertising business experienced robust growth, benefiting from AI-powered ad optimization and an expanding customer base beyond mobile gaming. Ad revenue of just a tick shy of $1 billion for the quarter was up 73% year-over-year.

CEO Adam Foroughi emphasized that Q4 was a turning point, as AppLovin successfully captured significant holiday shopping ad spend, demonstrating that its technology extends far beyond gaming.

With the Axon AI platform now serving a broader set of advertisers, including fintech, automotive, and insurance companies, analysts believe AppLovin is well-positioned for long-term upside.

For Q1 2025, AppLovin projects total revenue between $1.355 billion and $1.385 billion, with advertising quarterly revenue expected to surpass $1 billion for the first time. The company also announced the sale of its mobile gaming business for $900 million, aiming to focus more on its advertising technology.

Wall Street Analysts Boosting Price Targets Today
The consensus price target for AppLovin going into its earnings release was $423, but that number will be moving higher as several large banks revised price targets higher.

BTIG raised its target from $437 to $600, maintaining a Buy rating. The firm highlighted higher-than-expected Q1 guidance and faster-than-anticipated e-commerce growth.
BofA lifted its target from $375 to $580, citing strong momentum in AppLovin’s advertising segment and AI-driven enhancements to its e-commerce model.
Piper Sandler increased its target from $400 to $575, emphasizing that AppLovin’s growth is no longer tied solely to gaming.
Benchmark raised its target from $375 to $525, noting that the company beat Q4 estimates and guided Q1 revenue and EBITDA significantly above consensus.
Wedbush hiked its target from $545 to $620, arguing that AppLovin is gaining market share in mobile advertising at a rapid pace.
JPMorgan raised its target from $325 to $475, stating that early pilots in fintech, insurance, and healthcare advertising suggest even broader monetization opportunities.

Guggenheim Reiterates Sell Rating on $PANW, PT $130, Cites Declining New ARR and Valuation Concerns

Analyst comments: "Palo Alto Networks reported F2Q results largely in line with our preview, 'Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair,' showing little upside to the company’s chosen top-line metrics (NGS ARR, RPO, Revenue). However, two metrics stood out: cash flow was much weaker than consensus, and we estimate that Total New ARR (our preferred metric to measure overall business momentum) likely declined for the sixth consecutive quarter, even against the easiest comp ever. This trend signals further moderation in revenue growth.

No other company in our coverage has experienced such a significant decline in new business growth. Guidance was also largely in line, with F3Q and FY25 guidance for NGS ARR and RPO maintained, and annual revenue raised modestly based on the F2Q beat.

On a positive note, management reaffirmed FCF margin guidance at 37+% through FY27, leveraging AI and other efficiencies to sustain margins. However, we suspect revenue growth in FY26 and FY27 will continue to moderate due to the persistent decline in Total New ARR over the past 18 months, potentially impacting the absolute value of free cash flow (FCF).

To be clear, PANW is a great company, and credit is due to its team for evolving from a firewall appliance vendor into the largest pure-play security vendor in the world. However, at its current valuation—18x EV/NTM Recurring Revenue and 39x EV/NTM FCF for a low-teens grower with moderating growth—its premium seems unjustified.

We acknowledge that others, like FTNT, trade at similar multiples (17x EV/NTM Recurring Revenue and 37x EV/NTM FCF), but those are based on temporary benefits from a future product cycle. We believe that is not a strong enough case to justify PANW’s valuation. We maintain our Sell rating with a $130 price target."
