"I'll be fine," Maia assured him. "I'm not as sensitive to the cold as humans are." Ignoring the fact that she was essentially human without her pelt. "Well then, let's race," She challenged him. She dogpaddled to the other side of the pool. "We'll race from here!" she announced.

Dari was a little more graceful on his way across the pool, and he met Maia at the other end, holding on to the edge and putting his feet against to wall to avoid sinking or drifting away.
"Alright, when I say 'go.'" She had to be familiar with this form of counting, mustn't she? It seemed the most popular amongst human children.
"Ready. Set. Go!" And he dove back into the water, stroking for the other edge.

Maia knew it well. She'd raced children on the shore many times: though she hadn't been particularly fast, not when she'd first started. She swam after him, but it was clear she was lagging behind. She couldoonly swim so fast in this form. "Maybe you're right," She said. Maybe having her pelt on was for the best.

Dari beat Maia there by leaps and bounds. He sat on the stairs and waited for her, grinning. Yes, he did hope she'd put her pelt back on to avoid being unhappy and also newly ill. He spit a spout of salty water to the side and pushed himself up on the wall to grab Maia's pelt, offering it out to her.

Maia took her pelt once she reached Dari. "Its no fun being unable to communicate, though," she complained. She put it on, pressing her nose to Dari in thanks. She gestured to the other side of the pool. She moved so her right dlipper was out of the water, and slapped the water with it to indicate the start of a new race. She took off.

"It's all the better for me to learn the body language of a seal-formed selkie." Once again he watched her change and envied the ease with which she did it. He nodded when she gave him a boop and then looked out to the other side of the pool. Of course Maia couldn't exactly count down for him and he realized what was happening too late, not that he would have had any chance to catch her. Maia was off in a shot and he was only so fast as the average trained human. He was smiling as he came to the other side nonetheless.

This time Maia had won. She was thrilled when Dari reached her, circling him. She climbed out of the popool, transforming and giving a yawn. "You were faster with that tail, even if you looked ridiculous." She smiled at him, as if to reassure him that he hadn't looked that funny. Well. He had. But a good sort of funny. "Ready to head back to bed?" she asked.

Well of course he was! That was why he had adopted it in the first place! He laughed and shook his head as Maia crawled out and thought that that was a rather short swim for someone who wanted so desperately to escape. She was tired, though, that much was clear. 'Tired' was better than 'crying alone,' so he supposed he should count himself lucky. He came up the stairs himself, the water running off of him in little rivulets. A drop would get caught here or there but in general he was water-proof. You couldn't get water inside, after all. Water diluted everything, which meant either growing huge to compensate or draining out a fair bit and ending up with a diluted being. Neither of those options was very fun. He spit just a bit more salt water and nodded.
"Sure. I'm ready if you are."

"Is this always open?" Maia asked. Since they had been able to come at two am, Maia didn't think there was a time limit on them. She might be able to come at any time! That'd be nice. "When you're free we should come again." When it wasn't past three am. "I can teach you to swim faster if you like."
She stood, reaching for his hand. "And I'll show you all sorts of Selkie stuff."

"Yes, it's always open." Dari gave Maia's proffered hand a squeeze but released her to pull his pants back on. The clothing wasn't for his own comfort, it was for that of his coworkers. "We have a track and a tennis court as well, if you're ever in the mood."
Newly clothed again he held a hand out for Maia to take. "We are often busy, but I'll be sure to come by when I have the time." They were still on a sort of half-mission after all. Nobody had expected Maia to be found and come back this fast.
"What is 'selkie stuff,' exactly?"

Always open! The idea was wonderful: she'd always have access to salt water. She looked towards Dari as he spoke, blinking. Track? Tennis? What? "What's tennis?" she asked, curiously.
She took his proffered hand. "Really?" she asked. Dari would still visit when He had the time. That made the Selkie feel a bit more comfortable. "Body language and fishing."

"It's a game. It's kind of like volleyball, but the ball is smaller and you hit it with racquets which is just like a... big empty spoon with wire string through it. I can show you a picture some time."
Toby wasn't particularly fond of sports and so Dari's initial introduction had been somewhat lacking. Most of the information had come from other sources.
"Oh, good. That'll be helpful," Dari agreed, even knowing he was never going to learn how to fish with his hands, "I'll have extra survival training above all of the other humanoids."

Dari had lost Maia's attention at the word volleyball. She studied him for a moment, before saying, "It'd be better if you could hit people with racquets. You know. Just lightly. You could chase them around and go boop! And then they could chase you. That sounds like a much better game." Who needed small volleyballs?
"Yes," Maia agreed. "I'll even show our secret selkie handshake." She smirked at him. "You'll definitely have an advantage."

"I suppose technically you could play like that, although it's definitely not in the rulebook." Tennis racquets were delightfully springy as it was.
"Oh, will you?" he asked, arching a brow in what was definitely an expression he picked up from Toby, "I hadn't known there was a handshake. Especially with flippers."

"Well no, it wouldn't be. Since I've only just made these rules. I'll write them in later." She grinned at him. "We can play tomorrow. I'll challenge Toby to a game. You can be on my team! Together, there's no way we'll lose."
"Of course there is. No other selkie's seen fit to share it with you, though. You'll be the first nonselkie to know it! I'll show you tomorrow. Come on. Toby is bound to show up in three hours."
