"S-s-suh-sorry!" she yelped, trying to duck out of the way and failing.

"I have no urge to take hold of your weapon, kid, no matter how dark it is." Maybe he should have done as Cain suggested, but Lukas shook his head -- tense, in the darkness, not that they could really see it -- and brought his weapon out again, instead. Almost absently, he flicked one little dagger to spinning, and it made a low, round red glow that lit up the planes of his face and his chest, and just enough of the mall in front of him that hopefully he wouldn't trip over everything.

"Just keep them out, and I can keep an eye on you. Gretchen, you have the girl?" His weapon was light, which meant maybe he should be scouting, but the idea didn't even occur to him. They could move slowly, as a group, to find the map. Hopefully, it would be lit.

"Our team is inherently romantic," Mimsy explained, watching with half-lidded eyes as she reveled in his touch. "And we're going to make each other happy. All the time. Forever and ever!"

The compliments and kisses were a very satisfactory return of his attention, and she tried to speak through all of the audible responses he was earning from her with them, which went about as well as one might expect.

"It's like--like we, ah--like the universe itself app...reciates that we should be together in aaaaall--"

He stopped. Why had he stopped?

A momentary lack of coherence made it highly fortunate that he both steadied and led her towards the source of the problem, which she was eventually able to identify as some kind of rustling noise. Svensyl remained unsummoned, but the held the light ahead of them in an effort to locate what was causing it.

This brought them into what appeared to be some sort of toy store, if the first series of displays were any indication. She opened her mouth to suggest that they could play, but the sound returned, replacing any words of her own. It didn't resemble the noises associated with the infected creatures they had encountered thus far, and didn't seem loud enough to be coming from anything very large. These should have been the approximate size of average humans, shouldn't they?

"Perhaps it is an animal," she whispered, flipping through a mental catalog of potential organisms - until she considered another possibility, and cleared her throat to raise her voice for a calm, clear, "Hello?"

Mimsy's greeting was met with a small, high pitched scream of fear.

The sound jolted Robert to life. Jezebel was dismissed immediately, and he lunged for the source of the scream, heaving away the giant shelves that had already lost most of their cargo when they'd tipped over. They'd created a tiny tent of space, just big enough for something - or someone - equally tiny to crawl into.

When Robert exposed the scared little child hiding under the shelves, she screamed and threw a teddy bear right at his face. Other than a stunned look, he didn't react; instead, he surveyed her carefully, checking her eyes for infection and her skin for bitemarks. Lastly, he checked for any bugs nearby, because Robert had seen it all at Deus, and he wasn't prone to making the same mistakes twice.

When he was sure it was nothing but a little girl, he immediately bent down to the floor. She cringed, pulling away at the movement, and he went down further, until he was all but lying on his stomach. It was a ridiculous pose for someone of normal stature, so for Robert it was unbearably out of place. There was nothing threatening about a big man lying on his stomach - and he knew that. His behavior worked, eliciting a small, confused giggled out of the child. But she threw another teddy bear to be sure (she had an arsenal waiting) and he let it bounce right off of his head. This time, he reacted - in a comical death throe. The resulting giggle was brighter, now. More alive.

"My name's Robert." He whispered out to the girl, who instantly clammed up at the sound of his voice. "This is my wife Mimsy. We're the good guys! Like the super heroes! We came to save you. Do you want to be saved?"

She looked unsure, but the teddy bears were put down. For now.

A reaction of absolute terror to the discovery of her presence was common enough for Mimsy to be entirely unfazed by this. While she simply continued to stare in the direction of the scream, Robert was already in motion; she wondered what he knew that she didn't, and why he'd desummoned his weapon, and why he was trying to look into such a small space for--

Oh.

It was a girl. A human child. A tiny little human child.

There was no consideration placed into how intimidating she might look at her full stature herself, but she slowly, carefully sat down next to Robert anyway. She suspected that she might have toppled over if she'd remained standing while attempting to process this (and frankly suspected she might still be at risk of it), so she quietly watched the interactions between the two of them.

Aside from giggling alongside the girl when he feigned death, she said nothing, holding each of her thoughts so delicately for fear that something might break.

They were good. They were good and capable of saving someone. They were good and she could help people and she wouldn't hurt her.

Her hand reached to capture a handful of his coat, seeking his certainty.

Robert moved to try and sit down, pausing when his jacket caught on something. He looked and saw the thin hand clutching at him for support. He flickered his eyes up to Mimsy, and saw in her face the look of a woman who wanted, but was unsure, of how to help. He reached for the hand, peeling it off his jacket and sliding his fingers between hers instead.

"It's gonna be okay." He murmured, turning his head back towards the little girl only after he'd spoken. He gave her his brightest, goofiest smile, and the girl wrapped her arm around a teddy bear carefully.

"Momma said no talks to stranger." She told him, her voice slurred with youth and with exhaustion.

"That's right, your momma's right. You shouldn't talk to strangers. You're a very smart girl. We don't have to talk if you don't want to. I just want to get you out of this dangerous place and bring you over to where it's safe." He held out his hand, and she recoiled, so he took it back. "Or if you want to, we could get to know each other. That way we won't be strangers. Okay?"

She pondered his deal for a moment, before fervently shaking her head in the affirmative. It sounded reasonable enough - to a four year old.

"Okay." He settled in. "So I already told you our names, Robert and Mimsy. Last name is Morris, and we live on an island! We built our house together, and we grow lots of food there, and we have some pets too. One little puppy and four raptors!"

"What's raptor?" She asked, clearly unable to stand by her 'no talking' position.

"It's a tiny little dinosaur. "Raaaaaawr!" He held his arms up and she squealed, burying her face into the teddy bear to hide her giggles. He went on like this for several minutes, telling her every little detail about his life with Mimsy, and at Deus. He told her he was a nurse, and Mimsy was a doctor, and it was this revelation that had the girl sliding closer to the two of them. She was unable to keep herself from eventually leaning both hands on Robert's knee, listening enraptured to his stories told from the perspective of someone whose heart was as young as she was.

"And then we had our FOURTH wedding! CONGRATULATIONS!" He threw his hands up in the air, and she did the same, with each wedding announcement. She put the teddy bear in his lap, and rested her hand on his knee.

"Think it's okay if we go walk you over where it's safe now?" He asked, seeing the glimmer of hunger in her eye. "I bet there's some food and juice over in the camp." And that made him suddenly want to go. He slowly shambled up to his feet, and waited to see if she would follow. But instead, she looked like she was having a Very Big Thought, and then rose up both of her arms at him.

He turned to look at Mimsy with a goofy, crooked smile.

"I guess that means yes, huh."

Just watching Robert speak to the girl made everything worse and better all at once, and Mimsy curled her free arm around her stomach as it began to painfully ache, displeased with this conflict. She didn't interject, nor did she add any details that she found very important by technicality, fearing that she might somehow ruin this. Seeing a child so invested in every wonderful detail of their relationship made her nauseous, knowing how incredible this simple thing could have felt outside of this reality.

The girl's clever understanding of the meaning of congratulations, and how eagerly she joined in on the celebrations, had the butterflies in her stomach tangling themselves into knots, eventually resulting in one wriggling form made of beautiful things in a terrible, inescapable situation.

As readily and often as she returned Robert's smiles, she didn't this time. Her eyes were wide with panicked discomfort, and she shook her head so subtly that only he would notice her hesitance. When she'd made her stance on this known, she wore a smile to face the girl and took a deep breath.

"You have learned all about us now! You know so many things!" There was an honest excitement in her voice, despite the quaver of anxiety. "Could you tell us your name in exchange, so we may finally not be strangers to one another?"

There wasn't time to tap out messages in 'Morris' code, so she settled for another solution by reaching for her phone, holding it up to him a brief moment later.

When she was certain he'd seen it, she left him time to consider their options and sent two messages to someone she knew was in attendance elsewhere, turning her attention right back to her husband as soon as she tapped 'send'.

Hello! You and Taym are a wonderful team! Congratulations!

To: America
I have a question of utmost importance and trust your judgment alone. Have you delivered any civilians to the designated area? Did they survive?

She didn't mind the distant treatment, because she was definitely going to prod him for a more satisfying method of praise afterward. As he let go of her hand, America did, however, tug him in sharply for a kiss on the cheek before running ahead to assess the damage and how to fix it. Of any area as a Moon that she had experience in, this was her strongest.

Directing several trainees that didn't look busy enough toward a store front to tear down some grating, America moved to follow only for her "flashlight" to chirp with a new text message. Curious, she pulled it out of Taym's coat pocket and read the contents, eyebrows snapping down in pensive concern.

His smile was not returned, and her expression alarmed him. He stared at her for a moment, even as she turned to talk to the girl, while trying to puzzle out in his mind why she looked like that.

And then she showed him her phone.

And he knew.

His lips tightened as he held back the curse that was desperate to come out, and flickered his gaze from left to right while he attempted to find an alternate solution. The girl had not responded to Mimsy's question, because she was not yet used to the sound of Mimsy's voice, and immediately withdrew with shyness once Mimsy addressed her. She tugged on Robert's jacket, drawing his attention away from the absolute nothing he was coming up with.

"What's up, buttercup?" He asked, his voice hazy with distraction. She'd been waiting for him to pick her up, and he finally did so, bringing her up on his left side and holding her there with one arm. She whispered something into his ear with exaggerated movements, holding her hand up to hide her face. She told him she was shy, and his attention returned to the matter at hand.

"That's okay, you don't have to be shy with us! Me and Mimsy, we're gonna protect you. You can tell us your name. What is it?"

She leaned in and whispered her name into his ear, and his face blanched with horror. Could anything else go wrong that day?

"Her name's Nancy, Mims." He grumbled out gruffly. The girl peeked over and shook her head, giggling as if this was all a game.

"No is not! My name is-"

"Nancy."

"Is not! Is-"

"NAME'S NANCY THERE WE GO SEE ALL BETTER." He put his hand gently over the girl's mouth, and offered his own panicked look to his wife. "If we're not supposed to go there, what do we do? We can't just stay here!"

The girl was trying to mumble something through his hand. It sounded like Ahflif. It wasn't Nancy.

When the message from America arrived, Mimsy's attention was pulled away from the child, satisfied that Robert had this covered for as long as she required to figure this out. The text confirmed her suspicions, as much as she'd hoped to believe otherwise. This wasn't a time she found herself very inclined to count on what she believed being equivalent to what was reality.

Her fingers hovered with indecision above the reply input, before finally settling on the minimum she was confident in divulging.

To: America
Thank you. She is a small child. Please inform if you become aware of safe civilian transport.

The frantic question of what to do was asked as she continued to stare at the phone to ensure the message was sent, and she began to respond without looking up at him.

"We will find safety. Barriers are an option. If circumstances change, we can consider more extreme methods of ensuring that she is kept--"

Then she finally glanced over again.

"Robert," she cried, alarmed at the sudden and drastic change in his behavior towards the girl. She firmly grasped his sleeve and tried to pull his hand away from her mouth, giving him a look of incredulous bewilderment.

"When I was younger, no one wanted to call me by my proper name either." As she explained this to 'Nancy', she gave Robert a Look, because he knew this. "What is your real name? You do not have to be afraid to be who you would like to be."

The sound of his long, exasperated groan was a quiet soundtrack to the answer.

"Alice!"

The answer was yes. This could get always worse.

There was a new message on her phone. Mimsy was vaguely aware of this.

But the singular understanding within her mind was that the girl's name was Alice. Had she been able to advance her thoughts past this point, she might have realized that the exact reaction that she was having was what Robert had been so vigilantly attempting to prevent. He would know more than anyone what this would mean to her.

Wide, glassy eyes looked at the pair across from her, mournful in her recognition of her husband holding a tiny child who was so proud to be named Alice that she refused any other name.

She swallowed past a lump in her throat as she began to lose sight of them behind the blur in her vision.

"That is my most favorite name." As pained as her muted words sounded, it was still evident that she meant every one of them. "We will keep you safe. And you will be happy. And everything will be okay. Everything. Everything will be."

He was sure that, in his whole life, he had never been more crushed than that moment.

(But in truth, every moment felt like the most of something, when it had to do with Mimsy. There was no marker for judgement, anymore.)

"Put down the barrier daggers." He whispered quietly, but before she could take another breath he swooped down and kissed her lips, as if attempting to force all of the pain, and suffering, out through their kiss. The little girl in his arms made a long and whiney sound of disgust, but he ignored it while he did this. Mimsy needed the stability of his constant, vibrant attentions. She needed to know that he believed they could get through all things.

Even this.

He pulled away, and turned to tweak the little girl's nose. "Think that's gross, do ya? Do ya?!" She screeched with delight, and suddenly he realized the sounds she made could cause unwanted attention. So he put his hand down, and held her safely, comfortingly, in his arms.

"You're with the two strongest and bestest heroes around, Alice." Saying the name felt like glass going down his throat. "You ain't got a care in the world."

All of her assurances to Alice, as repetitive as they had been, were spoken with honest intentions. Mimsy was determined to fulfill them to the best of her ability, which led her to reach for the barrier daggers as soon as the words left his mouth. The newfound courage that she could be someone who could help and protect was still securely within her, and the only doubts that extended past it were easily suppressed out of necessity.

But her fingers lingered above the dagger's handle instead of grasping it, and in a fraction of a second somethingone reminded her of the one last insecurity that kept trapped their progress towards a family trapped within a dark, abhorrent mire, and this was confirming it, wasn't it, sending her off into tasked irrelevance for him to be happy without--

It only took an instant to extinguish that doubt. As he expertly demonstrated the balance he was capable of, the balance she was worried would be tipped past a breaking point, her fingers curled around the dagger with confidence.

The kiss left a smile on her lips and a silent I love you in her eyes, and as he teased her for finding their affection totally yucky, she happily set to work.

She'd only managed to place one of them before Rep's voice began to echo throughout the mall again - accompanied by what was undeniably an even tinier human child, judging from the sound of its incessant crying, which he seemed not at all pleased to be dealing with. But he was pleased to remind them that he was watching, and she tensed with discomfort as he quantified this statement with 'all of you'.

Her gaze darted anxiously towards Robert, and she returned to the two of them before the announcement was (quite violently) completed.

"You aren't a little biohazard," she quickly blurted, and while her words implied she was speaking to Alice, her eyes seemed more focused on her husband.
