Jesse wiggled his bare feet in the earth as he bent over, digging gently into the ground and removing various plants, transfering them over to a line of clay pots. Half the pots already contained plants. He was glad the plants had been able to get as large as they had before the first chilly signs of winter showed up. On the wooden fence that marked the boundaries of the field a sleek black crow perched, watching him with an air of obvious boredom. Planting was uninteresting to Smartypants when it didn't involve tasty insects to capture.
Mew’s tails twitched as she walked along a wooden fence. The air was just starting to cool off for the winter. She was not looking forward to all the snow. It always made her glasses fog up with every breath which was annoying she did like the fall season though. All the pretty colors were vibrantly singing and all the animals were storing away food and getting pump for the long cold season. Ahead she saw a cow just sitting on the fence watching a noodle dig up plants. Moving up to the fence she leaned on it peeking in for a moment.
Smartypants took great offense to the presence of the stranger, though she wasn't nearly as territorial as her mother. A single derisive caw and she flapped off towards Jesse. She settled down on one of the clay pots and surveyed the ground with beady eyes, looking for morsels. Jesse looked up from his work at the sound of Smartypants' call, and noticed for the first time that they had company. He straightened up, one hand wrapped securely around a young plant as he raised the other dirt-smeared hand in the air as a greeting. "Hello there! Pleasant weather today, isn't it?"
Mew raised her own hand in response for a small wave and nodded. It was alright for now but it was going to be cold quickly. She eyed the crow surprised it had flown toward the farmer rather than just taking off. She wanted to ask about that but shouting would have been bothersome. Instead she pushed from the fence and walked down a bit further so she was closer before pointing the crow with questioning eyes and a confused tilt to her head. Calling out her voice never carried as far as she would have liked. “A bit strange, is that crow a pet of yours?”
Jesse laughed as he walked over to the pots, setting the plant he held into one and scooping soil loosely around its roots. "You could say that, but it might be more accurate to say that I'm a pet of hers." He flicked a finger in a quick caress down one of Smartypants' wing, causing her to whip around and give his hand a light peck. It was a game both of them had played since they were young, and she was still a bit faster than he. Jesse only chuckled though; the peck wasn't hard enough to really hurt, let alone break skin. "My dad raised one from an egg and she took to following him. Smartypants here is one of her offspring. My brothers and sister all helped raise the chicks, so they've taken to us much like their mother has taken to my dad. It doesn't stop them from having attitudes though. Like cats with wings, but not as cuddley." He walked back over to the plants still in the ground and began digging, slowly extracting it so he didn't harm the roots.
Some pet. The bird had reached back and pecked him so fast it had been a near blur. Mew listened to the story very amused though the idea of something being raised and loved so much without it being cuddly was a bit disturbing. Mew watched the farmer work for a few moments before climbing over the fence and sitting on it. She really had little to do today and watching the farmer work was interesting. He was covered head to toe in grime but it didn’t seem to break his focus on the small little plants. “Need help?” She didn’t land on his property yet not comfortable with the idea of trespassing but just sitting on the fence did no harm. Her elbows were on her knees and her chin in her hands as she gazed at the farmer.
Jesse looked up from the plant he was digging around. "I never say no to help. It's nothing too hard, just tedious and bit messy with a lot of bending over." He pointed to the row of plants before him, around two dozen. "I'm transfering these to pots. All you gotta do is dig up the earth around 'em so you can pull 'em out of the ground without harming the roots." He eyed the woman. "If you think you need a trowel let me know. I'm used to digging in the soil with my hands, but not many others have tough skin like me."
Rolling her eyes Mew came off the fence this time on his side. “Never would have asked if I minded a bit of dirt.” She moved to inspect what she was working with. The plants seemed pretty healthy. Kneeling down she didn’t bother asking for a trowel. If this man could do this then she would be able to, besides she could feel the roots this way and hoped she’d be less inclined to break them. The first handful of dirt she knew she was going to end this with caked nails that would take forever to wash clean.
Jesse just chuckled. "Well at least you can't say I didn't warn ya." He turned his attention back to the plant he was working on, slowly exposing the roots enough that he felt confident in slowly pulling it free. "Whenever you get the plant out of the ground just put it in the pot. Scoop a bit of the soil over the roots, but don't worry if it doesn't seem to cover completely. I'll add more soil to them later on."
Mew worked the plant out though cringed when one of the delicate little roots snapped off in the ground. Glancing at the farmer she hoped he didn’t notice since it was a small root, but still. She had broken his plant! Following his instructions she covered the pot but made sure to cover up all the roots. It didn’t matter what he said. She was convinced the poor thing was going to die because she had already broken it. At least this way it wouldn’t die because it was cold.
The pair worked in silence for some time. Jesse was content to let the only sounds being made be those of the wind, the sound of digging, the gentle crunch of their footsteps as they moved around, and the scornful caws of Smartypants as she watched the woman dig. Apparently the woman wasn't handling the plants in a fashion up to Smartypant's standards, but he'd seen her pull a plant up and knew she was doing good enough. Smartypants was just particular and looooved to mock others if she thought deviated the least bit from perfection. He wasn't sure if the woman was naturally chatty or not; at the moment it appeared she was so focused on getting the plants out of the ground in one piece that she didn't have a spare corner of free attention to start conversing. It was kind of cute how her brow wrinkled from the force of her concentration and how delicately she covered the roots in the pots, like they would shatter at any second.
He was the one to finally break the silence between them, and they got to the last of the plants. "Thank'ye for the help. There's a freeze comin' through tonight, wanted to get all the delicate stuff out of the way." He straightened up, clutching the last of the plants from his row in his hands. "Family's pretty busy gettin' everything else looked after that nobody had time t' help out." He chuckled. "Not too many strangers come along that get a hankering to get their hands dirty."
That damn bird could use a roll of ducktape around her mouth. Glaring at it every few plants Mew decided she really disliked the bird, still the farmer was nice. He was efficient about his job and handled the plants with care which made Mew want to do even better so she focused more on the task before her.
“Oh. Um well your welcome. I have nothing but time. I am new here and well let’s face it.” She glared at her feet for a moment. “Don’t really know what interesting to see and even if it’s popular hotspot that doesn’t mean I’ll like it.” Taking a look at all the plants. “Well since I’m already dirty why not add some sweat to it? Where do you want the plants to go?” She gave him a smile and rolled her eyes at the bird’s noise. Really that think was going to end up with a foot up it’s behind if it kept being so annoying. “so since she adopted you have you ever considered being the evil child just to get her to chill out for a bit?” She moved to pick up a pot holding it close to her chest so there would be no chance of dropping the little plant she had worked so hard to cover.
Jesse just laughed, his deep, booming voice rolling over the empty fields. Smartypants flicked her tail in annoyance. His forest-green eyes were full of mirth even after he stopped laughing so he could answer the woman's question. "Oh no, she'd like that too much! It takes a lot of creativity to outmischief a crow!" He chuckled. "I've been told I must have a lot of patience, but seems to me it annoys her the most when I just ignore her." Smartypants chose that moment to let out a baleful croaking sound, as though she had perfectly understood Jesse. He just grinned, then bent down to pick up a couple pots. "Well if you're still determined to help, bring 'em over here and load 'em up." He directed the woman to a wheelbarrow sitting at the field edge, a scuffed and dirty-looking thing that had clearly seen better days, yet was far sturdier than it appeared. As he set the pots in the barrow he looked up at the woman. "It's be rude of me not to introduce myself to someone givin' me a hand. Name's Jesse Lee, but most just called me Jesse." He grinned. "And you already know Smartypants." The crow made a cackling sound and flicked her tail, clearly pretending to ignore both of them.
Ignoring the bird worked? She gave a glare at the bird. Well then she would have to learn to ignore it! Looking back up at the farmer she listened to him more. Yes he did seem to have a lot of patience. Far more than she possessed at any rate. Bending down she grabbed a pot and hauling it to the wheelbarrow hesitated to put it in. “This thing won’t break on you after a few feet will it?” She looked at Jesse for moment while shifting her weight. “I’m pretty sure that’s more rust than there is metal left on the thing. If you washed it; it might just fall apart.” Still at his assurance she put the pot in and went back for another. She learned their names but was hesitant in giving out her full one. “Mew” She cleared her throat and tried again. “You can just call me Mew. It suits well enough.” She gave the bird an evil eye to see it if was going to make a racket at her name. It did she was going to kick a clump of dirt at it. She didn’t care if the farmer was there or not.
Jesse gave the barrow a pat before moving away to grab more pots. "Nah, she's sturdy. Just looks rough because she's been workin' all year without a break. Once winter sets in we give her a scrub, new coat of paint, and general tune-up." He hoisted a few more pots into his arms. "A lot of the stuff around here has seen better days, but there's usually someone on the farm who knows how to fix something if it happens to break." He set his pots down and grinned, one hand resting on the barrow and one on top of his head to adjust his hat. "No point buying new when you can fix something up good as new."
Smartypant flapped over and landed on the handle of the barrow. She craned her neck, sunlight catching her black feathers and bringing out the blue and green highlights. Apparently deciding the pots were stacked to her standards, she ruffled up her feathers and hunkered down on her perch, watching Mew and Jesse with beady black eyes.
‘She’ might be sturdy to Jesse but Mew was certain the wheel barrow was going to fall apart. Still his logic made sense. If someone on the farm knew how to fix something then it was going to be a lot more cost effective to just jerry rig it for a while rather than just head out and get a new one. Noticing the bird crane and peek on their work she had to admit its feathers were kind of pretty, but that personality was defiantly a piece of work. Snorting at the bird she just kept on working. Her clothes were going to be a mess but so far none of the pots had been broken. “Besides dealing with the plants what else do you do here on the farm and why is it only you are out here doing any work? Well I mean you and smarty pants out here.” She rolled her eyes with her amendment including the bird but doubting it could be helpful if it’s life depended on it.
"Pa and my brothers are harvesting the rest of the fields. Ma and my sister are making sure the barns are ready for winter." He settled the part pots in the barrow and straightened up, pointing to the southeast. It was easy to see fields here and there in the diretion he pointed. Once you were looking you could even see the small figures of buildings, though not much detail could be made out. It was easy to overlook them, given the distance. "I'm close to the edge of our property. If you'd been walkin' the south path you'd probably have seen 'em, but that path doesn't go anywhere but to other farms." He dropped his arm. "Aiden or Beau sometimes come out to help, but there wasn't a ton left to do and Pa needed the help more." He wrapped his hands around the barrow and lifted it, causing Smartypants to clack her beak at him, but after flapping her wings a bit for balance she settled and remained on the barrow handle below his hand. "These are headin' for my workshop, which is just a bit up the way here. You can come with if you're wantin'." He grinned and looked at Mew's dirt-smudged hands. "It's got running water, so you can wash your hands."
Brothers and sisters? Geeze somehow Mew got the feeling he had a big family. Though if they had a lot of land it made some sense. “Sure. Being clean sounds nice.” She rubbed her hands a bit flicking of bits of dust and dirt. Still her clothes were going to have to be scrubbed to really get any chance of hope in her mind. “It must be pretty nice to have a large family though maybe doing this by yourself is some way to escape all the noise?” She gave a little smirk to Jesse. Honestly she doubted he was kind who needed to have his own time away since he seemed pretty calm, besides how far could he get away with that bird around him all the time. “Thanks though for the wash up offer. I appreciate it”
Jesse hoisted up the barrow like it weighed nothing and began wheeling it up a small path that looked as though it had been worn into the ground over the years rather than deliberately cut. He didn't go towards the fields and buildings he had pointed out, but rather in the opposite direction. There wasn't any visibile buildings, but they were also traveling over a bit of an upward slope that could be hiding something. "I'm pretty used to it. With all my siblings and all the baby birds around, not to mention all the stuff we could get up to on the farm, there was always noise. When I want to get some quiet though, I go to my green house."
As they climbed the slope a roof showed up. The further they got the more that showed. The rest of the roof, then the walls. Finally a complete building came into view. It was pretty big and was half glass half wood. He led them over to a door and set down the barrow, opening the door and picking up some pots. "Follow me. The sink is just inside this first room."
At the word greenhouse Mew’s eyes light up. There was just something magical about the word. Perhaps because it had been so romanticized in books and movies. She followed him up the path wondering what it would look like. When she saw the building a small part of her was disappointed the windows didn’t look sparkling and mysterious like the image in her mind. Another part of her though was rather impressed with the building’s size it might not be something out of a novel but it was a rather nice looking building. Following his lead she snagged a pot and held it close to her chest and followed him in. “No sense in cleaning up until the work is actually done.” She rolled her eyes like this was a common sense statement not that she was actually volunteering for more work. The glasses on her head slipped and fell down to the bridge of her nose in a crooked style but there was nothing she could do about it with her hands full.
Jesse grinned as he set down the pots he held and touched the brim of his hat, apparently a sign that he agreed with Mew. He gestured to the counters that filled the little room. "Just set 'em down here. Once we get everything in I'll show ya what I have in the main part, if you're interested. I can at least offer you something to drink for all the trouble you went to with helpin'." He went back out and fetched a couple more pots. Smartypants roused herself and jumped down to the ground. She peered at Mew out of the corner of her eye as she walked into the building, as if she knew the female wanted to give the bird a kick if she could. Once inside the crow hopped up the counter and paced along it, before hopping up to a hanging ivy plant. She had to flap her wings a bit as the plant swayed from her sudden weight, but as it settled she hunkered down and continued to observe the two.
“Yes. I’d really like that.” She didn’t know if it was the main part or the drink that interested her more. Mew did as she was asked and watched the little pest hop about. “Just don’t poop on Jesse’s plants.” She shot the bird a look as it bounced on the counter before going to get more pots. With that done she straightened up her glasses as she went to fetch more plants. Once they were all in she felt oddly satisfied. She wasn’t one to have many plants or anything of the like so this was kind of nice. On her own she was sure all the plants would have died in moments. She was much better with making images and messes than she was with living things.
Once everything was inside Jesse set the barrow neatly against the side of the greenhouse then retreated into the much more crowded little room and shut the door. "This is just a buffer room," he explained as he scooted by Mew and headed for the door set in the opposite wall. "Mostly for winter, but also windy or stormy days. I can leave the door open and move stuff around without letting cold air or huge gusts in to disturb any of the plants. Seemed easier than having to always open or shut the door when my hands might be full." He opened the door. Light spilled in from the doorway and a warm breeze heavily scented with green things and wet soil trickled in until it filled the room. He picked up an armful of pots and walked into the room. It was full of light, and noticeably warmer than outside, or even the buffer room. The tables were crowded with an assortment of pots. Some held plants, others seemed to hold only soil. There were a few flowers such as orchids and African violets. Along the floor near the windows nearest the door were boxes of some kind of vine that released a lovely aroma, flowers hidden as peeks of color among the leaves.
Jesse set his pots on an empty table near the door, then turned to the counter behind him where a brewing machine sat. He opened a cabinet and peered inside. "Fancy anything in particular? I've got a decent variety, coffee, teas, cocoa, but only sugar if you need a bit of sweet."
She nodded understanding what the room was for when he explained it but still it was interesting to learn. Grabbing a few pots herself she followed him but stopped looking over the plants. They were all amazing. It took a moment to step forward again. She looked over the plants as she wondered the names of them all. “Straight black works fine for me.” She stuck out her tongue and wrinkled her nose. “Not too much of a sugar fan.” Setting the plants down she slid the pots around so they were about equally spaced. “Hey what are those?” She pointed to a violet that was few hues odd. It could have happened because it was grown in a green house or it could happen if it was a special breed. Mew wondered which it was. She started to flit about looking all about at all the plants there were a good varity and they all seemed well placed. Getting back to Jesse she took the coffee and looked up at him. “The whole place looks really nice. Still after a storm it must be hard to replace all the windows. Do you keep a set of spares somewhere for easy change?” Knowing him he might well keep them under a bed or something.
Jesse chuckled and walked over to one of the windows, rapping on it. The sound was a bit muted than one might expect to come glass. "These walls are more likely to blow down first before they break. The glass is special stuff, a lot tougher than your average window glass. That one there,-" he pointed to a window above the drink maker, the only one in the room that was of normal dimensions and appeared to be openable, "- is a bit more delicate. We built it on the lee side though, and it ain't given us a bit of trouble so far." He gestured to the room. "That's why this place is a bit small. Don't know if you've been in many, but this is more the size of a hobby greenhouse than a productive one." He walked over to a table that held the flowers Mew had first asked about. "I'm savin' up to expand. You'd be surprised how many well-off folk want pretty flowers to keep in the house. I sell a lot of African violets-," his fingers lightly brushed a pot, "-and orchids. When I got time I work on bamboo or bonsai trees. If I can train 'em right they sell for a pretty penny. I'm hopin' with more room I can grow more of a variety, though it's a lot of trial and error."
He went back to the buffer room and started moving the rest of the pots into the greenhouse. Smartypants emerged perched on his shoulder on his third trip out. "Got a sink and soap in here if you want to wash your hands. Another sink on the other side of the wall. Also got a bathroom in the back." He grinned. "Figured we were putting plumbing out here anyway, so might as well build myself a bit of a luxury. Beats walking all the way back to the house or findin' a tree in the middle of the night."
She cocked her head at the sound and was rather surprised. She never thought about special glass. As what the lee side was she could only guess that meant something out of the wind so it was less likely to be struck. “Huh. No I can’t say I’ve been in other green houses before. So I wouldn’t know much about the size or anything like that.” She followed him over to the table sipping gently on her coffee. So it was just an African violet, not something he was trying to grow different for any reason. “Well now. If you did arrangements as well you could easily expand business to do some events like weddings or funerals, not to mention special occasions. Of course that means getting a few common plants then ones like these that really pop. Arrangements are all about color and form and the message you want to convey.” She took a quick glance over the plants that were there. “You seem to have a pretty good variety to start. As for the bonzi’s how are you showing them?” She blinked looking at him wondering if he thought of decorating the base pot in soothing zen kind of looks that fit the plant or what not. She moved to the vines. “What are these ones here?” was it some kind of mertel?
“Plumbing is a good idea.” She giggled. “I’ll head over and get washed up.”
Jesse glanced at the plants Mew was looking at as he brought in another pot. "That's cup of gold, and the ones next to it are wax plants." Smartypants clacked her beak as though to state a wordlessly 'obviously' at Mew. "They both climb, though the wax plant does better drapping like ivy. I need to transfer the cup of gold to trellis pots. Figured I'd give them all winter to grow, and once it's warm again they'd be ready to plant." He vanished, grabbed the last pots, and closed the buffer room door behind him. "Not sure what you mean about showing, but I'm trying to grow the bonsai in a han-kengai form, if that's what you meant. The one that's furthest along anyway. Got a couple seedlings started that I'm going to try other forms."
He held up his hand and Smartypants, after staring with great deliberation, hopping on it. He moved her to the table with all the newly placed pots and went digging back under the cabinet, coming up with a small clay dish and a bag. "Bathroom's through that door there," he said, nodding his head to a glass door set in the back wall. "You'll see it, the door is right there to the left." He set the dish on the table and poured the contents of the bag, a mixture of seeds, inside. Smartypants hopped over to gobbled the mixture down as he put the bag back, then began to arrange the pots to his liking.
Nodding at what Jesse said she waited until his attention was elsewhere before silently flipping the bird to the bird. “No I meant how they are displayed in the pot. Sometimes they look best with a plain pot, while others look particularly good in pots that are reflective of cliffs sides or sand gardens still others with mossy looking pots or just zen like designs.” She finished up her coffee made sure to rinse out the cup first before cleaning herself up. She also took the time to make herself mildly presentable like smoothing her hair that got frayed. It didn’t really matter what Jesse or the bird thought, Mew liked to look nice for herself. When she was all done she went back to the greenhouse watching Jesse move a few things around. There was just something peaceful and nice about this place. “You know it’s kind of hard to explain what I mean. I’ll come back sometime with a few decorated pots and you will have to tell me what you think of them.” She wondered how much she could help his business of saving up for a bigger green house if she got involved and gave him a few thoughts. She didn’t know plants but she knew designs and arranging flowers was something she could do. Maybe if she taught him a few things he would be able to earn a bit more and reach his dream faster. Of course she wasn’t rich by any standard herself so it wasn’t like she could just give him money to help. He would have to still work hard, but she figured that would just the kind of thing for Jesse.
