Masumi surveyed the other students as she stretched her sore hands. The afternoon was wearing on, and one of the other students had started to drift off. Not that he was blatantly sleeping or anything, but he was nodding off over his own chart of hand signs, his head jerking back upright every so often. Andou-sensei didn't really seem to mind, though, probably feeling a little lethargic himself in the warm afternoon. One of the more advanced boys who had gone out for some sparring returned to the classroom, and made his farewell to the teacher, soon followed by the second boy, looking a little worse for wear. The second boy also left, and Masumi gave him a cheery wave in response to his goodbye. Polite, that one.

Her fingers and wrists were starting to loosen up again, so Masumi glanced back down at the chart. After the ordeal with the Boar Seal, she figured she'd try for something easier, though possibly with the need for help. She settled on the Ox Seal. It wasn't long before she found a new place her fingers could hurt. Although she had thin fingers, Masumi still felt an uncomfortable pressure at the base of her fingers when she made the seal. At least the seal was relatively easy to form; she felt the chakra release with her first try. She figured it was because it was the left hand that had to make the more complex formation, as the dexterity in that hand was helped by her biwa playing. Instead of moving on to the next seal, however, she practiced reforming the hand seal, trying to get her right hand to loosen so it wouldn't squeeze against the fingers of her left. Sometimes, the hand seal would be too loose, and the chakra wouldn't release, or it would still be too tight, and her fingers would feel that awful squeeze. Eventually, though, she found a happy medium, and was able to regularly release chakra with the Ox Seal.

Masumi seemed to be picking up hand seals rather speedily. For the most part, the challenge was in making the formation of the seals smoothly. Her nimble fingers were used to dexterous work, and the fingering skills she had picked up while learning the biwa seemed to transfer to the formation of hand seals. Emboldened by her growing comprehension, Masumi decided to try another seal that had originally looked difficult to her. She decided to experiment with the Horse Seal. She was still a little apprehensive, since the fingers locked at the base of the fingers as well, but to her pleasant surprise, the hand seal formed easily, without any pain, and almost immediately she felt the release of chakra. It came so easily and so naturally that she jumped. She formed the seal again, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. After five consecutive successes, she decided it wasn't a fluke, and wearing a small, proud smile on her face, she decided to move on to the next seal.

Masumi followed up the Horse Seal with the Dragon Seal. She had little trouble with this seal as well, only slipping up on her thumb positioning. She was also pleased to discover that the interlocking fingers in this particular seal didn't have the squeeze she'd experienced with the Ox Seal. It seemed that the problems she'd had with that seal were unique to the Ushi Seal.

By this point, Masumi felt that she'd gotten into a rhythm. The seals were becoming easier to to learn, and it didn't take long before she was able to activate the chakra release associated with each seal. Still, she wasn't able to bring herself to try the Bird Seal. Even though she knew that was the seal she most likely needed help on, and class would be getting out soon, she was hesitant to try it. Perhaps she did not wish to risk injuring her pride by failing to form the seal properly, or finding out that her quick grasp of hand seals was simply beginner's luck. After all, she was not born into the world of ninjas; before she was adopted by Kirigakure, all she knew was life as a mendicant musician. She peered about the room again, wondering how much her classmates already knew before they'd even attended class for the first time. She even tried imagining what Andou-sensei was like as an Academy student, but in that endeavour she failed miserably. He just looked a little too stern and pedantic to have been a student once.

It was time for the Tori Seal. Masumi had worked through the other difficult seals, and had a relatively successful time of it, so she felt she was ready to work out the Bird Seal.

Frustration.

Masumi couldn't keep it off her face. She was pretty sure the amount of time she spent on the Bird Seal had already surpassed the amount of time she had spent on the other seals, and she was nowhere near solving the tangle of fingers.

More often than not, her third and fourth fingers ( her ring and pinky fingers) would not line up with each other, one or both fingers usually missing their counterpart on the other hand. Even with Masumi's practice on the biwa, they weren't as strong as the index or middle fingers. The fingers also had to be straight, which rarely happened when playing the instrument, and they had to be pointed away from the direction of the stronger fingers. She could feel her tendons strain all the way into her forearm, even more so than when she practiced the Boar Seal. At least they were different tendons, so she didn't need to worry about aggravating previous stresses.

Her first and second fingers did not fare much better. Masumi attempted to try to get the inside fingers squared away, and hoped this would cause the outer two fingers to line up, but it was to no avail. When she formed the inner curl, the entire seal collapsed. She was sometimes able to keep the pinkies together, but without the ring fingers also upright, the seal wasn't anywhere close to being correct or useable. Soon, her first two fingers were starting to hurt again as she continually jammed them together in hopeless attempts to replicate the diagram.

An hour passed before Masumi finally decided to seek help. A light sheen of sweat coated her forehead, a result of her fruitless concentration and the painful soreness in her fingers. She stretched her hands out, rotating the wrist and alternated between making a fist and spreading her fingers out. They felt more like claws than hands by this point, and Masumi leaned back in her chair, staring somewhat blankly at the ceiling for a long while. Finally, she sighed, and meekly waved at Andou-sensei to get his attention.

"Ano... Andou-sensei?"

Kokoa spent some time just breathing in and out slowly to clam and focus herself. When she felt she was ready her hands snapped to thier position and she released he chakra. It took longer then she would have hoped but it was definitly there. Kokoa still needed practice with chakra control. It needed to be there as soon as she called for it and not a second later. Kokoa let go of her pressure and let her chakra die back down. Again she breathed slowly to calm her mind she closed her eyes and invisioned what she had to do, this time she would have it down. After a minute she was ready and with a flash of her hands and quick open of her eyes the chakra came bursting out like a rocket and kokoa laughed at her acomplishment. With a smile she shook out her hamds and got ready for her final attempts.

Kokoa did 10 jumping jacks to get her mind and body focused together as one. She planned to finish her pracice with two more tries, but they would have to be the best of the best. Kokoa closed her eyes and thought. She followed her breathing, in through her mouth, down to he lungs, and then back out through her nose. After she was fully focused and ready she poured out her chakra and it came rushing out like a river. Kokoa held the intesity for as long as she could and then let go. 9 down 1 to go, kokoa thought as she smiled to herself, she was almost done.

Kokoa was tired from all her work. She prayed that this atempt would be her last but no matter what she was dedicated to finishing her practice. She took a minute to focus herself on the goal ahead. One more time, one more time, one more time she said over and over again in her head. She shook out her hands and then formed the sign. Breathing out she pushed out all the chakra she had left. Her chakra came storming out with the power of a strong animal. Kokoa smiled then dropped her chakra back down. Exhausted she sat with her back leaning up against the wall. "Done" she managed to breathe out.

Armads the Doom Bringer

PostPosted: Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:11 pm

Bo Jun entered the academy, which was both a positive and a negative experience for him. On one hand, he had a significantly smaller chance of going down a path in which he would be captured and hung. On the other hand, he was basically signing his life away for the prospect of serving someone else and having them stab him in the back. But in the end, it was the idea that he might eventually carve out some sort of independent command for himself that drove him here; being a ninja in the land of the hidden mist meant that they needed hardy sailors and people who could fight on ships. Perhaps he would have his own ship one day, filled with his own cutthroat ninjas! Or perhaps he wouldn't even make it that far; he had heard frequently of the many dangerous trials that awaited those who walked these halls. There were whispers that many of the never returned; and perhaps that was for the best. After all, a small number of survivors meant those survivors would be the cream of the crop... Time to look for a teacher.

Bo Jun wasn't one to sit around, not when he could see other students training and getting ready to be part of the real ninja world. Without wasting any time, he walked up and after bowing and introducing himself, took his syllabus scroll and got ready to go. First order of business for the day were the "Hand Seals." Bo Jun didn't exactly know what they were used for yet, but he knew he'd have to learn them. At least there were pictures provided. He went to the corner of the room, and placed the scroll in front of him and sat down. There was nothing that said that he couldn't make himself somewhat comfortable when he had the chance; there was no use screwing himself over my making himself more uncomfortable than necessary. For now, he just sits back and tries to make the bird. Strange, it didn't look like a bird. Looked more like a gate to him.

12+0 = 12 Success!

Bo Jun was pretty happy when the first seal, the bird, was successful. Well, that was easy enough. Even though he knew that the others would probably be a bit more challenging. If they made the first one impossible, no one would want to be ninjas long. Not to mention they wouldn't serve much good in combat, or in any other high stress situation. Now he turned the the boar, which seemed to be relatively simple. Then again, appearances were deceiving. Anything could happen, and Bo Jun figured that the ninja that assumed things were easy was the ninja that woke up with a knife in his chest. Or a spear. Or a sword. Come to think of it, there were lots of things that could kill an unwary ninja...

Nat 20! Success!

As it turned out, the boar was just as easy as the bird before it. It was simple, easy to learn, and easy to remember. All in all, the second symbol was good enough to use in just about any situation. Now, it was on to the third symbol, the dog. He didn't really understand what a dog had to do with being a ninja, but he figured that it wasn't his place to question such things. They were obviously created by someone much smarter and wiser than him. After all, he was just a rookie fresh into the academy. What place did he have questioning their wisdom. Ah well, no use sitting around. He had hand seals to complete.
