I think feminists would put it this way: the woman's rights are equal to the man's rights. Not that the man and woman are equal, that kind of comparison is illegal. It's like cow =/= apple, there is nothing to compare!

There is a difference between men and women in the tora, but I wouln't put the weight on the rights, the difference is more in obligations... The man and the woman both have a different mission on earth, and thus their differences.

I phrased that incorrectly- thank you Nathan for phrasing it better. 3nodding
Zonko, then you might be shocked to know that on average, women received a significant pay less then men, even for equal work. Both my research projects (which had well over 100 hours of research in them, EACH) were on women. (though, unfortunately, I didn't want to do those topics sweatdrop sad ) Anyway, in World War II, women received on average, 65% of a man's wage.
I'm not trying to disregard law here, but it's not right that women don't get as many rights as men. I understand that men and women are the same thing- duh! How many men have you seen that have given birth to children!?
But what kinds of differences in men and women's right are there in Judaism? I'm sorry- I'm not knowledgeable on that at all sweatdrop

darkphoenix1247 Zonko, then you might be shocked to know that on average, women received a significant pay less then men, even for equal work. i know about that - but it isn't at all related to legal rights. besides, everyone knows that 75% of statistics are made up. Quote: Both my research projects (which had well over 100 hours of research in them, EACH) were on women. (though, unfortunately, I didn't want to do those topics sweatdrop sad ) you deserve something for that. i hope you got good grades, at least. Quote: Anyway, in World War II, women received on average, 65% of a man's wage. that was then. this is now. america is very much different than it was in WWII, and especially the economy. Quote: I'm not trying to disregard law here, but it's not right that women don't get as many rights as men. I understand that men and women are the same thing- duh! How many men have you seen that have given birth to children!? i lost count a while ago Quote: But what kinds of differences in men and women's right are there in Judaism? I'm sorry- I'm not knowledgeable on that at all sweatdrop the concept of "rights" is different in jewish law than in modern government. better to say instead "obligations", on the personal level. the rest are laws. for example, in marriage, all finances are in the possesion of the husband, including the wife's wages. in case of divorce, the wife recieves a sum predetermined in the marriage contract.

Welcome!! 3nodding biggrin I agree about being paranoid on the internet! 3nodding
Though some people certainly don't agree..... stare
Anyway, Thank you, Zonko! biggrin I was proud 'cause I got all 6's on my last presentation (the highest score) and I was one of 3 in my grade to do so! biggrin
My final presentation this semester is May 1st, and my dress rehearsal is Monday, April 10th. *gulp* gonk
And that's what I mean- I don't mean to disregard any law in Judaism, or Judaism in general, but I don't think some of these laws are right. What if the female is better at math then the male? What if he blows everything on drinks sometime? I know these are huge exaggerations here, but do you see where I'm coming from? Why is it right?

darkphoenix1247 And that's what I mean- I don't mean to disregard any law in Judaism, or Judaism in general, but I don't think some of these laws are right. What if the female is better at math then the male? What if he blows everything on drinks sometime? I know these are huge exaggerations here, but do you see where I'm coming from? Why is it right? back to the understanding concept. it doesn't have to make sense to you. just because you don't understand something does not mean that it does not make sense. ability math has nothing to do with it. it don't take a genuis to balance a checkbook. nor does it mean that the wife can't handle the finances- they just belong to the husband. this is another reason why jewish law is so amazing. everything is incridibly, complexly reinforced. true, some things might not make perfect sense, but if you learn about the context and application, it will. for example, take bris meilah. why would you maim your newborn son? that doesn't make sense.

darkphoenix1247 well, all cultures are different xd for example, I'd never eat a bug, but in some other countries.... blaugh no, that's completely different. one is about knowledge, education, and law. the other is accustomization, accepted culture, etc. but something occurs to me: you say that judaism is a culture. though it has culture (and many of them) it is by no means a culture
