Lee gave Rory and embarrassed smirk, not really sure what to say. She'd never been as skinny as her mother, but she wasn't fat, either. "I was never... bone-thin... but..." If Rory thought she looked good, that's all the really mattered. "It's not like I picked my dress out already, anyway. I mean, what if it's made for me?" That's what they'd been planning to do anyway, right?
"Lee, it's an unspoken... er, semi-unspoken rule that you should be in the best shape of your life for your wedding. I'm simply saying... cut down on the sweets for a bit, perhaps." She didn't want to see her daughter all chubby and imperfect on the most important day of her life. It was like adding insult to injury for the woman. Her daughter would be marrying a pikey and looking below par all on the same day.
Mr. Katan spoke up, not exactly wanting to get into this debate, but feeling he should throw his two-cents in. "Lee looks alright. She looks healthier, if anything." That probably wasn't a compliment for a girl, but he didn't really know what to say in a situation like this.
Lee just sat back, not really sure what to think of all this, and instead of sticking up for herself any further, she just ate another bite of her food. That, in a way, was sticking up for herself, depending on how one looked at it.

"I donnae know what you're on about, ma'am. Lee's looks the best I e'er seen her. She's gorgeous," Rory told the woman. "E'en if she puts on weight or gets as skinny as a rail, she'll always be beautiful t' me."

Lee smiled to herself, her cheeks slightly red, wanting to kiss Rory until he couldn't breathe, but decided here and now wasn't really the right setting. Damn Lydia and her damn possible diseases. She was hoping to show Rory her new purchases from earlier in the day. An entire week was a long wait to thank somebody for a compliment. Now how would she show him her appreciation?
Mrs. Katan glared at the boy, sitting back for a moment. "You say that as if this conversation is about you. Lee, do you really want to look fat for all your friends? The few relatives that decide to show up?"
Lee looked down at her plate. "No..." she answered, her voice a bit weak when her mother was basically calling her fat. "But I dun think a wedding isn't about looking good." She shrugged, finishing up her duck. Hm, she'd finished that quickly, didn't she? Perhaps her mother had a point when she was treating duck as comfort food.
Mrs. Katan just shook her head, realizing she was getting no where with either of the kids.

"Oi, you ain't th' one marryin' her," Rory grumbled. "I am, an' I doubt she'll be unappealin' wi' more meat on her or less. She's a healthy girl an' nowhere near bein' considered fat. If you cannae see how beautiful your own daughter is, ma'am, perhaps it's time t' take a better look at your own self." He went back to eating, trying not to argue with the woman and ruin dinner.

"I never called my daughter ugly. But at least I'm being honest with her. If anything, I'm doing you a favor -- somehow, I don't imagine you'll be the one to tell her when she's getting a bit on the overweight side. You don't want to upset your little darling, and that's fine. I don't mind being the one to warn her. If she starts gaining weight at her age, she'll never get it off." She was speaking as if Lee wasn't right there, a part of the conversation and listening to everything the woman was saying. At any rate, she'd made her point, and she was done.

"Maybe I wonnae be tellin' her 'cause it wonnae be an issue. Skinny or fat, I'll always love Lee. It's not her looks, pretty as she is, that made me fall in love wi' her an' they ain't what keeps me by her side an' wantin' t' share me life wi' her," Rory sighed, looking at Lee, a soft look in his eyes. If they weren't already engaged, he'd ask her to marry him right then.

When Rory talked like that, Mrs. Katan always got a little sick to her stomach. For once, she was glad her husband didn't bother being romantic.
Mr. Katan kept his nose out of it, focusing completely on his food and not saying a word the entire time.
"It's not really an issue, though. I mean, I won't let myself get fat, so dun worry about it." Both her mother and Rory didn't need to be arguing about something that wouldn't happen. Still... what had she done to earn a sweetheart like Rory, again? Her face softened as she looked up at the boy, a small, emabrrassed smile on her face.
Mrs. Katan sighed, looking to two over. She was done arguing, but couldn't help but want to point something slightly unrelated out to the couple. "Have you noticed you don't argue with one another? Am I the only one who finds that odd?" Were they still in the honeymoon phase? Most likely...
Lee cocked an eyebrow to her mother, then looked back at Rory. "Why would we wanna do that?"
Mrs. Katan rolled her eyes, shaking her head. "It's not something you'd want to do, it's just something that comes naturally to people that spend all their time with one another. How do you know you're such a strong couple if you haven't even had an argument? If you're always tiptoeing around the other's feelings, not voicing your opinions from fear of being disliked, then you won't last long." She shook her head again, taking another bite of her food, slowly working away at finishing the duck on her plate.
Lee frowned a bit, looking down into her lap. She wasn't sure if what her mother said applied to Rory, but... she actually had managed to pin Lee rather well. Sure, the girl could be difficult sometimes, but she tried her best to keep away from arguments. Was that a bad thing?

"Wi' all due respect, Mrs. Katan, are you on drugs?" Rory asked, glaring at the woman. "I'd say w' had a pretty damn good test o' how strong wor relationship is this morn, or did you forget when one o' your hired help decided t' crawl in me bed an' hae her way wi' me? Lee an' me hae argued a few times, just 'cause you donnae see it donnae mean it ne'er happens." He pushed his plate away, done with it, and sat rigid, hands clenched in the table cloth. He wouldn't arge with the woman. He wouldn't give her that satisfaction.

The woman smiled over to the boy, somewhat happy to see him so flustered. "What happened today only proved that Lee is able to forgive your stupidity."
"Inexperience." Mr. Katan slipped in, correcting his wife before getting himself out of the conversation once more.
"If that's what you want to call it, fine. Rory, have you never been annoyed by Lee? By something she'd done or said? How about you, Lee? The little quirks in one another that you once found endearing are the same things you'll learn to hate about each other. It's just what happens to couples over time. You've been tested by others, you're right. But you don't test each other. That's all I'm trying to say." The woman looked forward to whatever Rory had to say, a small smirk on her face as she took the last bite of her duck.
Lee only looked up at Rory, putting a hand on his to help calm him. She was very used to her mother wanting to make everyone as miserable as she was, but it seemed Rory still had to learn to ignore the woman. He'd only known her for a few months, and had only seen her a few times, so it was understandable he'd get so angered by her.

"Aye, she annoys me sometimes. I'll admit tha'. I'm sure I annoy her, too, on occasion. W' still love each other," Rory said. "An' fae what it's worth, I hope Lee always stays as she is an' doesnae become th' heartless bitter woman you are." He looked at Mr. Katan. "You must love her somethin' fierce t' sit there an' hae her admit t' not lovin' you an' say nothin' on it."

"The relationship my husband and I have is none of your concern." The woman's eyes narrowed, her posture straightening, clearly uncomfortable that the focus was on her now.
Mr. Katan kept his focus on nothing in particular, not looking to Rory or his wife, and feeling slightly worse now that even he'd been called out. What had he done to deserve this, anyhow? "Rory, I don't really want to get into this..." Even though his wife had done the same to him and Lee...

Rory shook his head. "Faeget it. I ain't even sure I wanna know what happened t' you two. It's enough t' know tha' Lee tries so hard not t' be like you. Different family values, I guess." He slouched down in his chair, eyes on his hands resting on the table. He really didn't want to talk about it anymore. He mostly just wanted to take Lee upstairs and do all sorts of things with her that he was sure her parents wouldn't approve of.
The servants meekly filed in, sensing the mood of the room, and began switching out empty plates for the final course: raspberry pie and rose ice cream. Rory watched them move about, but didn't acknowledge them as cheerfully as he had the other times they'd come in.

Lee looked from parent to parent, noticing neither of them were looking at one another. Both silent, as well. This, she was used to, though it had been a bumpy road to get here. Lee nudged Rory's foot with her own, just so he'd know she wasn't upset. Strangely, she didn't care what her parent's relationship was like, mostly because she didn't particularly favor either one of them. Sure, she preferred her father's company over her mother's, but she really didn't like the man for some reason. She still held a good amount of resentment for both of them, even if one was going out of his way to fix that, and even though at times she did almost like her father. And so, she was more than happy to have dessert placed in front of her, apparently the only one with a smile on her face as she dug in. "What kinda ice cream is this?" Her eyes were wide, staring down at her food with amazement.

Lee tilted her head, looking down at the ice cream before her. "A rose, I guess." Rose ice cream? Surely she was mistaken... Taking another bite, she had no way of knowing, considering she'd never really eaten a rose before.
