Ahren was glad that he wouldn't have to wait for Donovan, and a wave of relief washed over him.

"I'm so glad you're here," he murmured, heading over to one of the chairs to sit down. He folded his hands in his lap. "Did Miyu warn you about the new girl?"

"Yup," Donovan replied as he looked up from where he sat.

He knew elves were tall but sitting down on the ground made them look really tall if that was possible.

"You have your work cut out for you," he replied honestly, "at least though being immortal she'll have a chance at a normal life, it'll just take decades. Mortals don't have decades to have a normal life, so they simply never adjust."

In that being said, Donovan was telling Ahren two things, one, that it could be many decades before Shiara would ever heal enough to be close to anyone, but being who she was at least it was possible.

"We'll be going home after Kara wakes up from her nap, except Miyu I think. I'm not sure about her, I think she wants to stay a bit longer."

"Judging from the look on her face when we were with Shiara," Ahren murmured, "I'm sure she does. But before you go, we have to discuss what this means ... Donovan, she wasn't the only one up there, in the Northland. Despite our best efforts, they are still collecting elven children as slaves ... Shiara's been there for at least a decade, and she says there are many more. Not only that, but it seems ..."

He trailed off and closed his eyes as if he were almost too pained by his thought to even voice it.

"It seems," he murmured quietly, "that the dwarfs have been treating them worse than anyone could ever have foreseen ..."
PostPosted: Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:42 pm

Donovan thought about it, ignoring the tugging on his fingers for a moment. Well to be honest he wasn't surprised the Dwarfs were mistreating the children, they were slaves after all as awful as that sounded. Though sometimes he would like to get into the head of one of those Dwarfs.

"The last part I'm not surprised as bad as it sounds, slaves loose all right as a person once they become one, that's why it's one of the worse things you can do to a person. Animals are generally treated better," Donovan paused a bit.

This wasn't working, they weren't stopping even though he knew from Lin the stories about Haven was enough to keep normal folk away just not the slaver type, and no matter the stories slavers would risk everything life and limb for a profit it seemed.

He sighed, "For the most part the slavers seem to work only in cells there isn't a big master behind it all. Unless you include the dwarfs since I"m sure they have some say in how the operation is done, they are the buyers after all."

He knew there was a possibility of the elven guards in the North over reacting to the point where all the dwarfs would suffer, though at this point it was hard to tell who was involved and who wasn't.

"I take it that now the guards at the settlement you checked out knows now?"

Donovan had assumed they had to go through the guards.

Ahren shook his head. "We sneaked in and out," he replied. "The guards never knew we were there - and they have no idea about the slavery, as far as we know. We did it that way on purpose, for a few reasons. First, to prove that it's possible for people to get in and out without being caught. Second, so that we weren't making accusations without proof. Third, because if we told them about the situation and then left, they would attempt their own rescue and force the dwarfs deeper underground. The children aren't out in the open, they're hidden away, deep, where no one would ever find them. Without following the dwarfs by stealth, no one would ever find any of the children, let alone rescue all of them."

He paused for a moment, and then he looked Donovan in the eye. "As for losing their rights as people," he murmured, "abuse is one thing. But sexual abuse is another. The dwarfs have gone so far beyond the line that there is no saving grace for them now. Shiara spent more than ten years there as their sexual slave, for them to abuse, toy with, and beat on ... and when any of the other children misbehaved, Shiara was the one who was made an example of."

He shook his head, his face darkening with fury. "They have to be stopped, and stopped for good. The children ... no one should have to suffer like that."

Donovan sighed, Miyu had suggested that, though it was hard for her without stuttering. It was so bizarre to him that a world were relationships between races were like having a cat and a dog mate, and yet how common rape from a different race for the elves was kind of freaky.

"I would have thought the guards would have learned their lesson the last time it was pointed out to them children were coming in being disguised as human children and dwarfs being sneaked back out."

Donovan couldn't help but wonder if maybe them telling the guards this made them go all gung ho and caused them the hide the children more. The thought didn't settle well with Donovan.

"Yue had to scare the captain in charge sh-" he looked down at the twins and coughed, "He had to frighten the captain in order to get him to listen. The thing is, they should know or at least know the settlements have had a history of it. It's not like the kidnapping of children is unheard of, so I don't know. I think, as much as I hate to admit it because like you said they will attempt their own rescue and probably just make it worse, but there is going to have to be open dialogue between the guards of the settlements and from Haven."

He paused a minute and then added.

"Though if Yue's story is anything to go by that might not be easy at all."

"We might talk to them," Ahren agreed, "but I doubt that it would do any good. The soldiers there are part of the Westland Army, and royal family or not, we have no authority over them. They might hear us out for the sake of appearances, but that would be about it. They don't even have that much of an obligation. What we need to do, at least in my opinion, is talk to King Eregon of the Westland Elves. He isi the only one with the authority to do anything."

He clenched his fists in his lap. It meant far too much talking, and not nearly enough action, not nearly soon enough.

"The best course of action, I think," he added, "would be to get as many people as we can and just infiltrate them. But no matter what we do, the caves are so ... fortressed ... that no matter how we go about this, there's a high probability that we'll never get them all."

He gestured around him. "What we do here ... sure it helps. It helps the children that we do rescue. But it's not enough. None of it is helping to annihilate the slavery itself. We have to go to the root of the cause, the dwarfs themselves. If there's no one to take the children into slavery, then there's no need to take children, and they'll be a lot safer. But how to do that without declaring all out war ... and how to guarantee we would find them all ... I don't know."

He passed his hand over his face. "But either way, we do have to talk to King Eregon. If we don't, our actions could end up seeming an act of defiance, or even outright hostility, to launch an attack on a place that's under their supervision. The last thing we need is a political war on top of it."

Though he seriously doubted it would go that far, it was still a possibility.

"Then get what we can, but first," Donovan replied, "Is talking to King Eregon. Not just to get the children that can be found out of there, but it sounds like the security needs to be improved."

He knew it wouldn't be a perfect system children would always fall through the cracks that was going to be a given but without declaring another war and what was probably a small amount of the population doing this, there wasn't much else that can be done.

"Haven has been doing it's part in trying to track down and stop as many slavers as everyone can, but the Westland Army that is there needs to do their part and realize that people are getting through their defenses and check points. The target has always been slavers, but maybe now with permission it's time to find out who the buyers are. It can't be the whole race, it has to be a specific group of people."

Probably rich bastards or something like that Donovan thought, because as easy as to blame the whole race it would be like blaming the whole human race for giving into that market.

"The slavers have to go exactly whom are their potential customers are," Donovan replied remembering his last visit to the North, "Whom is giving the orders. Last time, it is the dwarfs who hire the humans out to be their hands in the outside world. That method probably has not changed at all, and the people most likely to know who it is that's buying are the people coming into the settlement."

Which meant their best bet was to watch someone going into the settlement with slaves.

"But as you say, it requires an open dialogue at the moment with King Eregon."

Ahren nodded. He agreed with everything that Donovan had said, he only wished that it wouldn't take as long as he knew it had to.

"Then I will personally see to it that it is done promptly," he told Donovan seriously. "I will make sure that it reaches King Eregon's attention, and that he knows just how grave the situation is. And with the help of the Valar, by the next time you come, something will have been accomplished."

Donovan grinned picking up one of the twins the other was more interested in trying to suckle on her foot it seemed.

"Whether it is large or small something I'm sure will have changed the next time I come around," Donovan replied, "I know it's hard, having to take the long route when time is so important, heck it's annoying. In the end though, having the extra eyes and ears... and hands will help."

He paused a bit before continuing.

"I've talked to Lin, and yes Lin is here she came long after we all left and Kara, Haradhel and a few others. Leaving Haven that unprotected made a lot of people nervous, I'd like to not do it again if it can be helped."

Ahren nodded. "I understand. I'll do what I can to make sure that it won't have to happen again."

At that moment, Haradhel returned downstairs, with Shiara following close behind her. Shiara was dressed in Arwen's old clothes, and they fit her well - Miyu it seemed had a good eye when it came to choosing clothes. The girl also looked a lot better than she had before her bath: her hair was brushed and braided, her skin clean and clear - even the wound on her neck did not seem so ugly now that she was clean. On top of that, she looked far more relaxed than she had beforehand, and if possible, more comfortable. Still, she was keeping a bit of distance between herself and Haradhel, though she did not seem quite as insistent as before.

Haradhel smiled at Ahren and Donovan. "So. Things are worked out, yes?" she asked them, her tone hopeful.

Shiara stood by the door and looked around the room: the toybox, Ahren, the desks, shelves, the twins; and finally her gaze came to rest on Donovan. Surprisingly, she registered no more fear of him than of anyone else she had encountered so far.

"Very," Donovan replied, "Everything has been settled and as soon as Kara wakes up from her nap we'll go home. We've already stayed a long while and no doubt the twins' healer is going to wonder why they grew so fast if we stay any longer."

Of course the twins had already grown quite fast, maybe he should have written that has a warning down in the notes that nutty doctor made them fill out.

"And we'll have to baby proof the house...." Donovan murmured thoughtfully.

He was surprised actually that Shiara wasn't completely freaked out by him, most of the children he had rescued during his own hunts generally were frightened of him at first.

"Miyu I think wants to stick around, I don't know how much longer Lin and Kaito do, Lin is really edgy on wanting to go out and travel again but she needs her whole wardrobe replaced first, though I suppose we could just cut holes into all of her clothes, but Helen wouldn't go for it."

Haradhel nodded. "And Toshiro?" she asked, tilting her head slightly. "Will he be staying with Miyu? Or will he be going back with you as well?"

He was well used to his new body by this time, but as to how well he would hold up with it when his source of magical energy was in another world ...
PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:32 am

"He'll probably be staying here," Donovan replied, "Toshiro is pretty much always around Miyu when he can be."

Not just because he needed magical energy neither, it was more of an arrangement that suited Toshiro. He would just be there whether as a presence or actually doing something to help Miyu.

Haradhel nodded. "They're welcome to stay as long as they like," she told Donovan. "Though I'm afraid it may be a long time before any physical healing can be done." She looked sadly at Shiara, who simply stared at the ground.

"As soon as possible, I'll go myself to King Eregon," Ahren told his mother, "and tell him about what's going on, and see if we can count on him for help when the time comes. Perhaps we should also write to Lothiriel and Ninako, maybe they could also help out. After all, despite the fact that the dwarfs are under the Westlanders' guard, the problem really belongs to all the nations - children are being stolen from all of them."

Haradhel nodded again. "I'll speak to your father about it," she promised. "We will send others to speak to them in person as well, though they already know firsthand about the problem, and how serious it is."

Atalya after all had had a great-grandson taken - Daeron - and Lothiriel had helped out at the ranch for a while, so she had a feeling that there would be no trouble with convincing them to help.
