This is merely my own point of view.
Squads have more to do with your personality than with your abilities. - though it is true that certain abbilities are best suited for some Squads than others. But there are, nevertheless, exceptions to the rule. - take Yumichika (from the Bleach series) as an example. His zanpakutou is kidou-based, but he's a member of the 11th Squad.
Anyways, a tactical fighting style doesn't necessarily have to narrow your selection. 2nd Squad also resorts to tactics - though theirs are more focused on stealth. You could very well be a fire or kidou user member of the 2nd Squad. But if kidou is your thing, then you might consider joining the 5th.
Of course that having an elemental zanpakutou, you can always consider the 10th as being your top choice as well. That Squad specializes in "elemental zanpakutou users".
Sure, both the 3rd and the 11th Squad are more orientated towards an aggressive style of combat, though like I've pointed out, you could be an exception. As long as your RPC likes the hack and slash style of fighting.
The 4th Squad is without a doubt one of the most specialized. One should only join if he/she desires to be a full-time healer. Again, you could always be an exception to the rule. The 12th Squad is another one. Join if you want your RPC to be a scientist/developer of sorts.
9th Squad is also very specialized. Not in terms of combat style I suppose, rather in conduct. The same could be said for the 6th, 7th and the 8th Squad (more or less). Anyone could join those regardless of the way he/she approaches combat situations, since those are focused on a philosophy of conduct.
Finally, the same goes for the 1st and 13th Squad /the two most generic ones I would say). It doesn't matter what abbilities you possess since they are orientated towards a purpose and not a certain set of traits. Join the 13th Squad if you want to be a protector, or the 1st if want your character to be an epitome of the "honored duelist". In fact, in my own belief, the 1st Squad is the one who can have the most diverse kinds of Shinigamis.
Again, this is just my opinion. You asked for advice and I gave you mine. The Captains of each Squad most certainly have a more detailed view of their Squads.
I apologize in advance if any description I gave does not make justice to a certain Squad, and ask that the captain in question rectify it. Also, sorry for such a long post. sweatdrop I'm just bored.

I know it was a joke, don't worry.
But like I've said, I voiced my (long) opinion for two other reasons other than helping you make your decision: 1) because I'm bored at the moment; 2) because I hope it can help future members such as yourself - though there are also lots of other threads with the same information everywhere.
Anyways, I'm glad that you've decided to join my Squad.

Well.. Squad 13 is a wonderful Choice! We rule!! Anyways... welcome to the Sereitei!
Btw folks! =) I'mma be having a person or two joining soon. Their training is almost done on teaching them how to RP. ^-^ Hehehehee.
