"Very well, sir," Halmir nodded, and then he bowed his head. "And now, sir I must return to my duties. I bid you good day, and I shall see you promptly at sunrise tomorrow morning."
And with that he headed off into the forest.
Ulrich glanced at Donovan. "Well?"

Donovan blinked while trying to come up with an aquenate feeling about this in his head. He didn't know which he found more difficult the solider mode or the poetry mode.
"He was in the military wasn't he?" Donovan asked finally.
Deciding simply there was no term he could coin to describe people like Halmir.

Ulrich nodded. "Highest rank attainable, until they retired him because of an injury."
He tapped his temple again. "He was tortured a little too much. Most men lose their minds, kill themselves. He was stronger. He lost only a part of his mind."

Well that certainly explained a bit, though one couldn't tell from first glance. Donovan suppsoed the only reason why he was suspious of that was because the man was able to do an 180. It was one thing to be odd like that and then be good at your work, to be odd like that and then turn into a bonfide soldier in less than a second spoke to something else.
"Well that explains a few things," he murmured, "It should be fine. He knows what he's doing, and he's capable that's what matters."
Whether or not Donovan would be able to stay the full two plus weeks with the man was questionable. It was a bit... disconcerning to have the man be so stoic all of a sudden, it reminded Donovan too much of older uncles.
"What's torture?" Lin spoke up finally.

Ulrich raised one eyebrow at Lin. "I'm not sure whether or not you're old enough to be learning about those kinds of things," he replied, glancing at Donovan to see what the man would do.

Donovan shook his head, though it was hard to tell the age of Seconds, those were things only the teacher training the child would talk about, and only after their first real weapon.
"When you're older," Donovan told her. "How much older?" Lin looked back at him. He gave her a mild glare, "When you get your first weapon older." She gave him a look back but gave in, when he talked about first weapons it meant there were traditions to be followed. Which meant, as much as she would like to bager him, there was nothing she could do.

Ulrich chuckled. "I sure wish Aliya had been that easy to convince when she was younger," he said wistfully. "The questions she came up with ... and she never would let anything go until we answered her - and truthfully. She always seemed to know when we were putting her questions aside."
He paused and looked at Donovan. "Anyways, did you have any more questions? Anything else you wanted to talk about? How do you like how everything's turned out?" He grinned.

"Not any immediate question," Donovan replied with a chuckle at what Ulrich had said.
The man might think that Donovan had it down with Lin, but just wait, she would attempt to be the youngest person to get her first weapon if given the chance.
"The ranch set up in both buildings and people have pretty much handled any issue that might have come up."

Ulrich grinned. "I'm glad you like it. And the people. I know some of them are odd, some of them are eccentric, and others of them are just plain creepy, even to Ulani and I ... but everyone hired is the best at their jobs out of everyone who applied - and that's another story in and of itself."
He chuckled.
"Aliya helped with the hiring, too," he added as an afterthought.

"Aliya taking part, that must have surprised some of the applicates," he mused.
After all, she was still young, not too young to not have a job here, but young enough where the older and more experience would be a bit put off by it.
"That had to be interesting," he mused.

Ulrich chuckled. "Well, we always knew she would be the one to take care of the breedings and births, so we thought it might be a good idea for her to choose the people she would be working with the most intimately. You'd be surprised how quickly she filled the positions, too ... I think she put up with less than Ulani or I."
He coughed slightly. "There was talk of her dragging people out of here by their collars."

Donovan laughed at that, he could actually see it, if that girl had any sort of temper like her mother then it was quite possible. Nevermind the fact he was sure even among elves there would be people who would not take well to listening to a girl half their age or less.
"Well if the method works," Donovan began, "Then it works."

Ulrich chuckled. "Apparently no one was taking her seriously at first ... she wasn't even an adult then, so I suppose it's no surprise. She had to make a few examples of people before the others would listen. After that I believe there was some small trouble, but she took care of that easily enough."

Donovan nodded slowly, "That is good, it would have been amusing to watch."
He looked around once more as they headed back to the ranch house, still a bit of the day left, so rest before going off to who knows where.
"Now that, that piece of business is out of the way, I take it you'll be heading back?"

Ulrich nodded. "Aye, everything's in order here, it's time I started looking after my own family again. Ulani's been complaining for a while now that I don't spend enough time at home, and" - he coughed - "it's been a while since I've done any hunting, so she's been badgering me for some fresh meat."
He nodded at Donovan. "What are your plans for the afternoon?"
