I've heard about that spoiler several times, seen the Wiki, and 4chan's /a/ drilled every spoiler from the manga into me before I ever heard of it being animated.

I only read the manga's first two books because my library had them- bad quality.
Then I read the last death scene of the series on an online manga thing. It's much better in the manga. Ryuk doesn't turn into some softy all of the sudden.
"BICH U NU DA RULZ. GAAM OVA."
Also- that bit about Near tampering with the note makes sense. I feel bad that I missed the possibility of it.

Cause calling your house and hacking your myspace for gay porn is totally related with vans blowing up.
I read the first volume of the manga and stopped because I hated it.
Was boring to me.
The anime had a good soundtrack and interesting animation style.
Especially in the snow episode with that girl, Naomi? Whatever her name was.
One he was talking to her when he wrote her name.

Spoilers yay.
I liked the last death much better in the manga, but otherwise I do agree that the anime is better.
And to revisit a point- I wanted to hurt Near when he said that he and Mello had surpassed L. Considering L did all the work for them, and stuck with two false rules he thought were real, still suspected the right person. Near had all that for him, and then Mello told him the rules were fake.
Which means that Mello did what L didn't, through a lucky visitation and having grabbed a Note.
Which means that all Near did was make creepy dolls.

If Light had just offed Aizawa, Mogi, Matsuda, and the rest of the gang, then he would have completely won.
Even with Mello's help and L's notes, Near wouldn't have had anything to go on if it weren't for Aizawa.

Pretty much Fish.
Near did not really do anything. Mello did all the real work in their 'lolpartnership' which only Near was really upholding. Matt did not really do anything either other then assist Mello.
L did all the real work in solving the matter and would have won had Light not be all, 'lol i know more about the notes then u!!1'
No one 'surpassed' L. If anything Mello just completed his work.
Near took all the glory.
EDIT:
I agree.
Light should have killed off his team over a long period of time.
Maybe leave only Matsuda, who would never had figured it out without being shown absolute proof.

Matsuda had to be left.
Otherwise there could have been no swimming lessons.
But otherwise, yeah, I agree. Light pretty much sucked near the end because he started getting too cocky and needed to be showy about everything. After L died he just figured that no one capable of anything was left.
Sadly, he was right. He just started sucking so much they didn't have to be worth anything.

That was realistic, but I kind of hated it.
Three years with no real challenge from anyone and Light just kind of faded. From the moment the time-skip started, he just started to suck. Making obviously slip-ups - (lol switching out notepads) - and broadcasting himself so much. Like how he kept wanting to taunt Near.
...Light got overconfident and stupid.
